Local hero Rohan Tungate showed his rivals the way around Kurri Kurri as he made a sensational start to the Australian Championship with victory in round one on Saturday. Lining up in his home town, Tungate dropped just one point to 2016 Aussie champion Brady Kurtz in race five. But he was unstoppable in the A Final. Despite seeing the red lights when he held a commanding lead at the first attempt, he triumphed in the re-run to claim 18 out of a possible 19 points. Edinburgh racer Josh Pickering made a real statement of his intent with second place in the A Final to go third in the overall standings on 14. He scored 11 in the heats, before winning the B Final ahead of Torun and Somerset star Jack Holder, the promising Jaimon Lidsey and local racer Mason Campton. Former World Under-21 champion Max Fricke went second in the championship after finishing third in the A Final. This saw him end on 15 after he recorded 13 in the heats. Kurtz joined Tungate and Fricke in qualifying directly for the A Final after defying an exclusion to make it through with four heat wins and 12 points. But his A-Final fall saw him go fourth on the table after round one. The next Aussie Championship action takes place at Victorian track Undera on Wednesday. AUSTRALIAN CHAMPIONSHIP STANDINGS: 1 Rohan Tungate 18, 2 Max Fricke 15, 3 Josh Pickering 14, 4 Brady Kurtz 12, 5 Jaimon Lidsey 11, 6 Mason Campton 10, 7 Jack Holder 9, 8= Sam Masters 7, Jordan Stewart 7, 10 Matthew Gilmore 6, 11= Robert Medson 5, Jye Etheridge 5, 13 Joel Coyne 4, 14 Cooper Riordan 3, 15 Declan Knowles 2, 16 James Davies 1. Australian Championship frontrunner Rohan Tungate was elated to overcome his Undera hoodoo as he won a second straight round to take an eight-point lead in the series on Wednesday.
Tungate triumphed in the opener at Kurri Kurri on Saturday and he brought his red-hot form to Victoria, qualifying directly for the A Final with 13 points, before winning the race ahead of Sam Masters, B Final winner Jack Holder and Brady Kurtz, who was excluded from a second consecutive A Final.
Kurri Kurri-born Tungate admitted Undera wasn’t one of his favourite tracks before the meeting. So he was delighted to strengthen his grip on top spot, which he holds with 35 points, having dropped just three all series.
He said: “I was really happy to make the final and to win is something special. I’ve got the monkey off my back with Undera, so I can like the track again. I’m just really stoked to win.
“When you’re riding well, you’re confident and it all just falls into place most times. But I have to be on my game, do all I can and keep plugging away at the points. We found a good setup in the end and I was pretty comfortable.”
Kurtz moved up to second in the standings on 27 after a 15-point maximum in the heats, but disaster struck in the A Final when he was adjudged to have brought down Holder as they flew into lap two, turn one.
Fricke drops down to third place on 26 after being eliminated in the B Final by a great ride from Holder, who only crept into the last-chance race on countback with eight points. Third spot in the A Final puts Holder sixth overall on 19.
Second spot on the night moves Masters up to fourth on 23. He scored 13 in the heats to qualify automatically for the A Final, but couldn’t get the better of Tungate.
The next round takes place at Mildura’s Olympic Park on Friday.

Former Aussie champ Brady Kurtz put himself firmly in the hunt for Australian title No.2 after drawing level with Rohan Tungate at the top of the standings in Mildura on Friday.
In a meeting won by Torun and Somerset star Jack Holder, Kurtz powered to a 15-point maximum in the heats, before finishing second ahead of Tungate and Sam Masters in the A Final.
Holder and Masters both registered 13 in the heats to cruise into the last four, but Tungate had to do things the hard way after a turbulent night in Victoria.
Despite scoring seven points from his opening three rides, he managed just one in his final two heats and only just made the B Final cut on countback with eight points ahead of Josh Pickering and Jye Etheridge.
But he pulled out a massive ride to win that race, taking to the dirt with desire to see off Max Fricke, Mason Campton and Jordan Stewart in the battle for the one remaining A Final spot.
The extra two points he accrued in the medal race ensured Kurtz didn’t snatch the championship lead and the pair are deadlocked on 45 going into the title decider at Adelaide track Gillman on Sunday, with Tungate seeking his maiden crown and Kurtz his second in three years.
AUSTRALIAN CHAMPIONSHIP STANDINGS: 1= Rohan Tungate 45, Brady Kurtz 45, 3 Max Fricke 38, 4 Sam Masters 37, 5 Jack Holder 36, 6 Mason Campton 30, 7 Josh Pickering 28, 8 Jordan Stewart 25, 9= Jaimon Lidsey 21, Jye Etheridge 21, 11 Matthew Gilmore 16, 12 Cooper Riordan 14, 13 Robert Medson 12, 14= Joel Coyne 8, Declan Knowles 8, 16 James Davies 4.

Rohan Tungate stormed to his first Australian Championship after edging out Brady Kurtz in a final-round thriller at Gillman on Sunday.
Second place in the A Final behind Jack Holder was enough for Tungate, with Kurtz finishing fourth in the medal race for the third time in the series after making a hash of turn one.
The pair went into round four tied on 45 points, and Kurtz appeared to have the edge as he won his first four rides.
Tungate was beaten by Max Fricke in heat 13, meaning he had to get the better of Kurtz in their race-20 head-to-head to keep the scores level going into the A Final.
And the Kurri Kurri-born racer pulled off a huge win, meaning both men finished the heats level on 14, setting up a winner-takes-all A Final.
Fricke joined them on 13, while Holder saw off Jordan Stewart, Jaimon Lidsey and Mason Campton to win the B Final.
And the Somerset star, victorious in Mildura on Friday, made it back-to-back wins, with Tungate sealing the second he needed. Fricke was third and a dejected Kurtz was left at the back.
It meant Kurri Kurri and Undera winner Tungate prevailed despite a tough night in Mildura on Friday, which saw him work overtime for third place.
Meanwhile, 2016 champ Kurtz was left to rue three fourth places in A Finals, despite his heavy heat scoring.
Outgoing champion Sam Masters withdrew from the meeting in his opening ride after crashing in practice.
