Another one on the horizon allegedly Is it last weeks meeting? COVENTRY’S (and Panthers one assumes) speedway future could be clearer following top-level talks at BSPA headquarters today. The Buildbase Bees, the reigning Elite League champions, are currently out of this year’s competition following a stormy AGM last November in which they and Peterborough walked out in protest over new regulations. With King’s Lynn elevated to the top flight to bring it up to the required eight-team level, the consistent position of the BSPA has been that there would be no way back for either the Bees or the Panthers in 2011. The two clubs took legal advice and the parties came together for talks prior to Christmas which resulted in a joint statement hinting that an amicable solution was still possible. That will, however, require the agreement of the other teams, and we understand that representatives of all current Elite and Premier clubs will be present at today’s talks. It is clear that should a positive resolution be reached, at least one of the two sides will have to substantially revise their position and the input of the respective legal teams could well have an important bearing. A previous Coventry statement said they would “seek legal redress as advised by our specialist legal team and specialist counsel” if the dispute remained unsolved. Bosses of both the Bees and the Panthers, led by Rick Frost, have remained confident in their case and also keen to stress that it is their wish to run Elite League speedway this year. Today’s events could bring that prospect closer to a reality – but they could also send the sport ever closer to a time-consuming, costly and damaging legal battle. coventryet
