Yes, I quite liked the lining up of the bikes by the starting gate, followed by the riders on the centre green, as long at it didn't delay the start! It passed a bit of time watching the bikes being wheeled out one by one, and allowed at least a brief introduction of each rider before the helmets went on. Not sure that we're talking about the same thing, but anyway, glad you pointed out helmets going on before introduction because that surfaced again last night. Hard to believe that it's all those years since I was moaning about Kenneth Bjerre being ignorant (in fact I remember him coming out from centre stand already with his helmet on) but we had some culprits last night, they'll know who they are!

Don't remember them lining up by the pit gate, but I didn't start supporting Panthers until 1980, so it could have been before my time. In either event, I think this was a better start to proceedings than a preliminary lap or the whizz round on the back of a pickup truck. A speedy start might be permissible if it looks like rain, although I'd rather they just started the "parade" a bit earlier.

Just came into my possession a small book (50 pages) regarding Harringay Stadium and Arena. A major sporting venue for many years. Very nostalgic.

What Speedway is missing is the theatre that used to be created by riders and promoters alike. Cyril Crane phoning the ref from the centre green springs to mind. And a couple of points on that from last night: The bloke on the mic at the start. I know that he probably volunteers to do that and that I wouldn't do it, but bloody hell, when you're a notch down from Peter York then you need to chase a refund from the presentation course. As for theatre in last night's dead atmosphere despite the cracking match, there were a couple of races last night (namely 12 & 13) that had the crowd really wound up and ready to salute the riders, but what happens, Saul breaks in with the usual waffle and the riders spin round on the back straight and piss off back in the pits to kill the atmoshere immediately. If you want an example then this fits the bill (from 2:22.31 a proper race (with a Crump chase) with crowd interaction afterwards) and is also very much in keeping with Panthers Halcyon Days:

Thanks, Riggers, and thanks for keeping the forum going! We need you to remind us of stuff like this, and to give us a place to comment without facing the trolls on BSF!

Great race, great season -those were the days b0212 Yup, never see the likes of that again. That was the start of wasted decade or more of Sky input before they just couldn't cope with the sport's incompetent self interested administration. The production at that meeting must have been expensive and time consuming. Surprised that it took them so long to realise what a lost cause our sport is in terms of wanting to move up to a higher leave. They should have got the message big time in 2010. Note the heat 15 coin toss on track and bikes on track also to gives the fans something visual as I pointed out above. It'll never catch on, as indeed it hasn't.

Thanks, Riggers, and thanks for keeping the forum going! We need you to remind us of stuff like this, and to give us a place to comment without facing the trolls on BSF! Thanks for that. The BSF is tribal, full of wind up merchants and fake news/rumour so it's good to have somewhere that you're not going to get into a scrap just for posting about events at your club. I must have a load of Panthers stuff on video tape, I'll get round to buying some video capture software at some point to transfer it to disk. I did try once but got bored doing it (probably didn't have the best software to get me to where I wanted to be on the video) so if I ever get a new PC I'll have another go,

I bought a Video "Grabber" to copy them to DVD, but I could never get it to work. The VCR is gathering dust in the garage, and I'm not sure that it would work now, but I'd like to look at them again some time!

Great video Rigsby this is how I remember speedway as it used to be almost a mini GP series every Friday night, maybe I am a little bit stuck in this era when the likes of Crump, Sullivan, Adams, Rickardson, Hancock and so on were regular visitors to the showground, todays speedway doesn't hold the same appeal or exicitement in comparison.

I'm not sure that I've any that old, they are in another room so I'll have to have a look at some point to see what's there. Yesterday I did find Panthers v Eastbourne (Premier League 14/4/95) in the one big league when they were the big boys but came to the EoES to face the likes of: Ryan Sullivan, Zdenek Tesar, Mick Poole, Ronni Pedersen, Hans Clausen, Jens Rasmussen, Mario Jirout, according to Panthers history pages. That'd be interesting. The second meeting of that tape is the infamous KO Cup match v Ipswich on 21/4/95 when Pedersen helped Doncaster into the fence on the back straight and the well balanced Ben Howe decided not to turn left from the start in another race, with Pedersen on his outside, and dumped the Panthers man in the first bend fence. Yes you had to be there to believe it. There was also the small matter of Panthers tremendous comeback to win the tie on track but then lose it on appeal under contentious circumstances.

Yes, remember both well. I recall Eastbourne fans in the stand blaming the track lighting for their failure to achieve their expected win. That was a good year for us, and to my mind the single league was great, although it now seems to be frowned on by members of the BSF. Perhaps one day we'll have another single league, if Buster can bear to admit that the present system is not sustainable.
