5 Oct 1973 Elton John released his seventh studio album Goodbye Yellow Brick Road. Under the working titles of Vodka and Tonics and Silent Movies, Talking Pictures, Bernie Taupin wrote the lyrics to the album in two and a half weeks, with John composing most of the music in three days while staying at the Pink Flamingo Hotel in Kingston, Jamaica. Goodbye Yellow Brick Road has now sold over 30 million copies worldwide and is his best-selling studio album:

5 Oct 1945 Brian Connolly, singer with English group Sweet, who had the 1973 UK No.1 single 'Blockbuster', plus 14 other UK Top 40 singles. Sweet scored four top-ten hits in the US: 'Little Willy', 'Ballroom Blitz', 'Fox On The Run', and 'Love Is Like Oxygen'. Connolly died of kidney and liver failure on 9th February 1997.

5 Oct 1947 Brian Johnson, singer with Geordie, who had the 1973 UK No.6 single 'Because Of You'. Joined AC/DC in 1980, after the death of Bon Scott. Bon Scott had first seen Johnson singing onstage, which included Johnson screaming at the top of his voice, rolling around on the stage, and finally being carried off. Scott didn't know that Johnson was then taken to hospital, where he was diagnosed with appendicitis

6 Oct 1972 During sessions at RCA Studios, New York City, David Bowie recorded 'The Jean Genie', which became the lead single from his 1973 album Aladdin Sane. The track spent 13 weeks in the UK charts, peaking at No.2, making it Bowie's biggest hit to date. The line "He's so simple minded, he can't drive his module" would later give the Scottish band Simple Minds their name.

Eddie Van Halen, revered guitarist and co-founder of the popular rock band Van Halen, has died of cancer, his son has announced The Dutch-American musician, 65, had been undergoing treatment for throat cancer. His band, Van Halen, were best known for their song Jump, which hit the top of the US charts in 1984. BBC 6/10/20

On 19 Oct 1997 Original Alice Cooper band guitarist Glen Buxton died from pneumonia, aged 49. Born in Akron, Ohio, he attended High School in Phoenix, Arizona, where he met Dennis Dunaway and Vincent Furnier, later to call himself the titular Alice Cooper. Buxton co-wrote several classic Alice Cooper hits, including 'School's Out', 'I'm Eighteen' and 'Elected.'

20 Oct 1977 Ronnie Van Zant, Steve Gaines and Cassie Gaines from Lynyrd Skynyrd were all killed along with manager Dean Kilpatrick when their rented plane ran out of fuel and crashed into a densely wooded thicket in the middle of a swamp in Gillsburg, Mississippi.
