More dogs than ever are being handed over, often with behavioural problems and, shockingly, many are still just puppies. Jeez, makes my blood boil. Pets are hard work and there is financial cost (can turn rather high if unlucky) for life. You can't put them back in the box when they become inconvenient

It was all going so well for the pets World during lockdown. Most rescue homes I looked into were dogs reserved or couldn’t even get on the waiting list. Appears now offices are opening again, the pets are a problem. Oh well was nice knowing you, thanks for keeping me company, here’s your new home

dogs crave company, don't leave your dog on his/her own all day - get a dog walker.
For about £15 you could make your dogs day so much better.
Check a dog walker has references, get a personal recommendation or ask your vet for advice.

Don't get a pet on a whim, do research!
.Dogs can't be left at home all day, they need walks, wees and company
.Check the cost of insurance, vets bills can be thousands.
.It's harder to rent with a pet.
.Can you put a pets needs first for 15 years or more?
Agree with all of that although not too hot on the rents issue. Do know that medical bills and treatments for pets can be scary. My dog has an ongoing lifelong condition and my interest free credit card has hit £800 with another £50 likely to go on tomorrow. I've never bothered with pet insurance but would seriously consider it in future. For instance, my dog will more than likely get cataracts and lose his sight due to his condition. Self pay is thousands of pounds per eye but with the right insurance much of that is covered.
Added to those costs you've got to be mobile for those vet visits or have a friend with wheels!

Well it looks if we are to inherit a Cat. Did not want to but a friend of ours is ill and likely to be so for foreseeable future . We and others have been feeding and caring for the cat but the crunch has now come. Either we have the cat or it goes into a cattery or put down. Could not let that happen so we will do our bit for it.
Believe the cat is insured and know it is microchipped, unfortunately all concerned are most unhelpful, vet wont tell us without owners permission ( the owner mentally incapable of doing that) need to know chip number it seems to be transferred to us but how can we find out with every one so bloody unhelpful. Any ideas please!!

Any ideas please!! I'd think that there are hopefully many places that it could go and be rehomed without being put down but if you can give it a go then that's the best option. Looks like the chip is a real issue if your friend can't give approval (the cat is property, as with anything else that they own). I'm not sure that it can be changed. However, given the circumstances I would have thought that the vet could still be more helpful. You are trying to help the animal after all and isn't that why they get up in the morning as well. At the end of the day, as long as the vet knows that you're looking after the cat then I'm not sure that it matters that much. Insurance wise, I doubt that that is transferable either. could try: www.cats.org.uk/help-and-advice/neutering-and-vaccinations/microchipping-your-cat uk-petchipregistry.info/homeandroost.co.uk/blog/legal-ownership-of-stray-cats-in-the-uk/

Cat now here. We have had cats in the past and did not want to form any sort of attachment with another animal , but both thought that we could allow the alternative. Thanks all for help and suggestions.

Thanks all for help and suggestions. Cat been here for a couple of weeks, now letting it out in back garden. Having cat flap fitted tomorrow. Been in touch with vet and pet insurance company to let them know that we are now looking after her and finding out if she is due for any injections etc.

For all those getting a puppy this Christmas, please keep in mind having a dog is a lifetime duty. If that is not what you had in mind, may I suggest a soft toy instead.
Added to that, with food, vets (insurance if you choose that) etc it can be very expensive.

Hedgehog Cabin@HedgehogCabin 29/7/22 This punishingly dry weather is putting our wildlife in crisis.
Lots of people help the birds, but the poor nocturnal creatures go unseen and forgotten.
It costs nothing to leave a dish of water out, front and back, and to refresh them each evening.
Just a small act of kindness.

Hedgehog Cabin@HedgehogCabin 1/8/22 All wildlife is suffering with the dry weather. The Red Kites, whose diet consists largely of earthworms, are starving as the ground is baked solid and worms have buried themselves deep, to find moisture. They're so desperately hungry. They don't even wait for me to go indoors now

A while ago mine had an infected foot and I had to go to an emergency vet out of hours. It was shockingly expensive with the opening line being that there was an upfront cost (can't recall exact amount but over £100 springs to mind) that had to be paid before you could get in through the door. Then there was the examination and medication on top. My boy got in to a minor boys scrap yesterday (both dogs on lead) and it wasn't until I got home that I noticed blood on his neck. He'd been bitten so it was the sinking feeling that I'm going to need my credit card for the emergency vet! If I thought a £100+ consultation fee was steep a couple of years ago then the £230 quoted this time really stunned me. Add to that an injection, a bit of treatment & dressing, plus minimal (few days medication and I leave minus £350 I'm surprised/slightly disappointed that my vets (reasonably priced and always caring service) diverts to a global money making company when their customers need such help? Probably not so bad if you've been fleeced by the insurance industry (and are covered in this instance) over the years but beware if you self pay!

Had Topsy for just over two years now, Previous owner out of hospital but still in a bad way , shows no interest in Topsy whatsoever. Topsy just been to vets for second annual check up and injections since we have had her. Seems to be content and settled in.

That was the name of our first family cat when I was a kid.

Had my latest vet wallet extraction this week at near £100 - half for my dogs diabetic treatment. I'm sure that I could do it cheaper myself by buying online but for the ease & lack of personal stress I take the hit which fortunately I can afford. Second was a £10 container which, at first glance with a quick Google search, can generally be bought for single figures elsewhere. Then £40 of medication with what looks like a book price of about £15 tops, but when you add in the prescription cost then till starts a continuous ringing sound.

Vets really are up there with dentists & lawyers!
My dog's on eye drops that are £7.50 online but because they are prescription only (additional £14) it's £20+ every month on top of the fortune for other meds and food. How some people cope (well they surely can't) I don't know. I'd think hard about another dog, that's for sure!
