Emil Sayfutdinov’s manager Tomasz Suskiewicz says the Russian’s injury setback will not stop the SGP wild card from chasing his World Championship dream.
Sayfutdinov spent much of his 2010 campaign on the sidelines. He broke his arm at the FIM Czech SGP in Prague on May 22, before his season was ended by wrist ligament damage in Malilla on August 14.
But BSI Speedway and the FIM had no qualms about inviting him back into the competition for next year, particularly after he finished third in his SGP debut season in 2009.
Many British bookmakers installed the Salavat-born racer, who turns 21 on Tuesday, as the pre-season favourite to win the World Championship this year ahead of more experienced rivals like Jason Crump, Tomasz Gollob and Nicki Pedersen.
While Suskiewicz says the Russian will be ready to fight for the gold next term, he admits even the best laid plans can go awry.
He said: “The title is his dream, so he will never give up until he achieves that. But last season shows you cannot plan to do this.
“He had a very good start to the Grand Prix campaign, but a big injury came to him and it screwed up all the plans.
“It’s better not to plan anything. The best thing is to make sure he is prepared for each race and goes and does his best. That will help him win the title, if not, we’ll have to wait another year, see what’s wrong and try to change it.”
Sayfutdinov is set to return to the track at Bydgoszcz today for some practise as he bids to make up for lost time over the winter. Suskiewicz says his young protégée has recovered from his injuries.
He added: “He’s really good. He has already had two practises on his motocross bike in St Petersburg. If the weather is nice today, he will come and practise at the Bydgoszcz track and then we will try and go to Italy at the beginning of November.
“He wants to get a feel for the bike again and he wants to do some testing for next year as well. For sure, we will have some new parts for the bike, which we want tested now.
“We won’t wait for the beginning of the season and we want to be 100 percent ready.”
While Sayfutdinov is one of the greatest natural talents the sport has seen for some years, the fact he done so few meetings in the past 12 months will clearly do him no favours.
Asked whether Sayfutdinov’s lack of action could impact on his scores next season, Suskiewicz said: “It’s hard to say right now. He needs to stand up with the other guys at the tapes and see what happens.
“But if you look at what he did after the first injury, he came back and dropped only one point in his league meeting at Bydgoszcz.
“He was alright in the Grand Prix at Malilla too until he crashed, and that was without two and a half months of riding, so I think and I hope it won’t affect him.”
