AJ'S SGP DESIRE
Swedish champion Andreas Jonsson hasn’t lost his Grand Prix hunger despite a season he admits “gave me more problems than joy.”
The 30-year-old’s future in the World Championship was in doubt going into the FIM Bydgoszcz SGP of Poland in October. But AJ triumphed in the last round of the season to finish ninth in the final standings.
This left him just a point adrift of eighth-placed Australian champion Chris Holder, who clung on to the final automatic qualification berth.
Despite a promising start to 2010, which saw him bag bronze in Gothenburg and top the heat scorechart in Prague and Copenhagen, the Dackarna man’s scores plummeted.
He notched just 18 points from four rounds in Torun, Cardiff, Malilla and Gorican. But two semis and a victory in the last three events convinced series organisers BSI Speedway and the FIM to hand Jonsson a permanent wild card berth for 2011.
There is no doubt a tough year took its toll on AJ mentally, but he was delighted to end on a high by winning gold in Bydgoszcz and is now itching to turn his fortunes around in 2011.
He said: “I think Bydgoszcz helped a lot. If I’d had a bad Grand Prix there as well, I’m not sure that would have helped me. So I’m really happy I could finish off so well and get another chance next year.
“Of course, I have to say I haven’t really enjoyed the Grand Prix this year. It has been really hard for me and it has given me more problems than joy to be honest.
“But hopefully I can turn that around next year because this is where I want to be. I want to be in the Grand Prix, but I want to be successful and feel good. So it’s down to me to do something different to what I have done this year and make that happen.”
Jonsson was grateful to receive news of his wild card so soon after the season ended.
He added: “I got it really fast and I found out a few weeks beforehand that they were thinking of giving me a wild card.
“That was also good because it meant we could plan straight away after the season finished. It’s always a worry when you don’t know what you are going to do the next year.”
The former Coventry and Lakeside rider admits his confidence took a knock as his SGP scores slumped. But he is certain he will be in top condition physically and mentally by the FIM European Grand Prix in Leszno on April 30.
He said: “Most of the things I’m doing are preparing me for next season. I can’t say I’m really confident at the moment, but I’m working on it.
“I’ve prepared all the bikes and I’ve been training really, really hard. That’s what I’ll continue to do throughout the whole winter so that I feel fit and ready to take on a lot of meetings next year.”

Never thought that AJ would find the consistency to match his occasional flash of brilliance but he was the surprise package of 2011. Think that he'll find it tough to match that in 2012
