SHEFFIELD TIGERS 37 BELLE VUE 53
SHEFFIELD opened up their season with a 53-37 home defeat in the ‘War of the Roses’ showdown against Belle Vue – but they gave the Elite League side a real scare.
The Aces had to work extremely hard for their victory and were pushed hard by the Yorkshiremen for much of the night, but they showed their class in the closing stages to eventually win a thrilling encounter.
And but for the injury withdrawal of Ricky Ashworth and winter recruit Emiliano Sanchez the Tigers may even have pulled off an opening night surprise.
Thankfully neither rider went to hospital and their absence from the remainder of the night was nothing more than precautionary.
Just four points separated the two teams after ten races and that slim advantage was only as a result of some unfortunate circumstances in heat 5.
Sanchez was forced to pull-out after clashing with team-mate Ashworth and then the Tigers skipper suffered his own misfortune in the re-run. His bike packed up whilst holding second on the third lap behind GP star Chris Harris, which allowed Charlie Gjedde through for a gift 5-1.
Ashworth hit the deck again in heat 9 and that was his night over, but the points were shared in the re-start when the reserve duo of Simon Lambert and Ashley Birks followed home Rory Schlein.
Auty and Birks then got the jump on the previously unbeaten Harris in heat 11 and although he found a way past Birks, the GB International fell on the final lap when challenging Auty. This left the scores level at 33-33.
However, Belle Vue then showed why they start this season as one of the favourites for the Elite League play-offs. The finished the meeting with four successive 5-1s, but the final scoreline didn’t tell the full story.
SHEFFIELD 37: Josh Auty 11, Ashley Birks 8+2, Hugh Skidmore 8+1, Shane Parker 4+2, Simon Lambert 3+1, Ricky Ashworth 2, Emiliano Sanchez 1+1
BELLE VUE 53: Patrick 12+2, Chris Harris 11+1, Rory Schlien 11, Craig Cook 7+1, Charlie Gjedde 5+1, Ricky Kling 4+1, Tomasz Piszcz 3+2,

Belle Vue star Chris Harris is determined to haul the Aces away from the Elite League’s lower reaches as the Manchester outfit bids to avoid a fifth straight season in the bottom three. Aces finished second from bottom last year despite tracking a side spearheaded by Hans Andersen and Peter Karlsson. The Scandinavians both saw their campaigns hampered by injury, and Belle Vue lost Danish rider Charlie Gjedde before he had even turned a wheel for them following a crash at Stoke in a pre-season practise. Harris arrives at Kirkmanshulme Lane having won three Elite League titles in six seasons with Coventry, who look set to replace him with Andersen for 2011. The Cornishman admits the Aces will not start the campaign as favourites to win the championship, but he has backed his new side to make a push for the play-offs. He said: “I think we’ve got a fairly good team. It’s not the strongest team and you’ve got to admit Poole look strong again. But we’ll see what happens over the year. “We’ve got a team that will go out there and do its best. The team we’ve got can’t do any worse than they have had in the past two or three years. They’ve been bottom and second from bottom. We’re looking at getting into the play-offs, and who knows from there?” Harris is determined to continue the form which saw him finish sixth in the final Grand Prix standings last year. But he knows the likes of Australian international Rory Schlein and Denmark’s Patrick Hougaard must give him plenty of scoring support if Aces are to succeed. The British champion added: “I’ve got to maintain the way I finished last year. Hopefully Rory can have a year where he settles down at a club and isn’t sacked halfway through. I think the management will give him a good run-out. “Patrick needs to step up to the next level like we all need to. He’s a good rider, a good talent and I’m looking forward to riding with him. "I’ve ridden against him and had a few chats with him when we’ve been racing all over Europe. He’s a nice kid, but he has to step up to the next stage. “Charlie (Gjedde) is coming back from injury and I hope he comes back as well as we know he can.” One interesting inclusion at reserve is British prospect Craig Cook. The Whitehaven-based hotshot has progressed from being a National League reserve to a part-time Elite rider within just two years. But Harris hopes Aces’ management do not place too much pressure on the Edinburgh doubling-up star's shoulders. He said: “I don’t know too much about him, but I’ve heard some good stories. Hopefully he’ll just come in and enjoy his speedway. “When I had the chance to double up years ago, I was just told to come in and enjoy the experience. Hopefully the management will put no pressure on him.” sgp

Off to a flyer: Belle Vue Aces 52 Kings Lynn 42
Chris Harris, Belle Vue’s superstar new signing, captained the side to a thrilling opening night Elite League win at Kirkmanshulme Lane on Monday night.
British champion ‘Bomber’ Harris scored two thrilling heat wins, including a sensational heat 10 victory when he went from last to first, to finish with nine points but the Grand Prix man was overshadowed by Belle Vue’s Danish duo Patrick Hougaard and Charlie Gjedde.
Hougaard, in his third season with the Autogate Aces, swept to his first ever maximum for the club, winning his four rides in fine style.
It was a performance which earned him the traditional bumps at the pit gate for the first time as he cast away memories of his usual slow start to the season.
But it was Gjedde who set the Aces on the winning path in front of a packed crowd which caused the meeting to be delayed for 15 minutes.
He went out in heat one with Harris with everyone looking for a debut victory by the British champion who was signed by Belle Vue from Coventry during the winter.
But it was Gjedde who swept away with Harris a close second to give the Aces maximum points for a starter and prove he was back in the big time with a vengeance.
It was Gjedde's first ride for the club since July 2009 as he has been sidelined first by a serious injury to a shoulder, which required lengthy medical attention, and then an equally serious knee injury which he suffered at the start of last season.
But, if anything, it was Hougaard's night and the lanky young Dane was delighted with his pivotal part in a win which boosted fans already thrilled by last week's announcement about a new stadium.
Hougaard said: “I made a few good starts on the night but I also had to pass in one race to get the victory.
“Everything clicked for me on the night and went right. It was a great way for me to start the season, especially as I'm usually a bit of a slow starter so I think to begin with a maximum is quite amazing.
“Our team manager, Jim Lynch, asked me if I wanted to ride in the nominated final heat but I opted not to in order to protect my maximum points.
“It would have been unfortunate if I'd taken an extra optional ride and then lost my first maximum points. Also Chris Harris and Rory Schlein were keen to do it.”

Nicholls did not make the meeting as he was stranded in traffic while Stead was ruled out with a rib injury, and that was just the start of a disastrous evening for Ronnie Russell's side.

It appears Piszcz has quit the club after a poor display against Eastbourne last night. Clearly will be taking the Piszcz elsewhere from now on.
Tomasz Piszcz, Belle Vue's winter Polish signing, resigned from the Aces after another dismal night at Kirkmanshulme Lane. He failed to score as the Autogate Aces slid to their first home defeat of the season to miss the chance of going back to the top of the Elite League table. Belle Vue team boss Jim Lynch said: “Piszcz’s manager came up to us after the match and said that he wanted to resign because mechanical problems were preventing him doing the job he wanted. “Under the circumstances we felt it was only fair to agree to his request.” The Aces went down in a gripping match where the lead changed hands six times but Eastbourne emphasised their place at the top of the table with a solid, display based on all-round teamwork. Piszcz wasn't the only Belle Vue rider to fall below expectation but he was the biggest culprit in a disappointing defeat. Belle Vue’s disappointed team boss Jim Lynch said before the match that it was a genuine test of his side’s credentials to be a force in the championship race and, sadly, they came up wanting. Rory Schlein was their top man once again with three heat wins while young reserve Craig Cook rode hard. But captain Chris Harris was struggling out of the starts and won only one of his five races while better would have been expected from Charlie Gjedde, Ricky Kling and Patrick Hougaard who all scored five points each. “You have to give Eastbourne credit for a strong display. They were good all the way down to number six and then had Lewis Bridger in great form at reserve,” Lynch added. “I thought we'd have come through to win at the end when we had our big hitters out but we didn't do enough. The points were shared in six of the first seven races and the Aces didn’t lead until Schlein and Cook took full points from the seventh to make it 22-20. But there were never more than three points between the sides for the rest of what was a pulsating match. And Eastbourne had the key men in Bridger and their number one Bjarne Pedersen who scored 13 points. BELLE VUE: R Schlein 12, C Harris 10, C Cook 7, C Gjedde 5, R Kling 5, P Hougaard 5, T Piszcz 0. It appears Piszcz has quit the club after a poor display against Eastbourne last night. Clearly will be taking the Piszcz elsewhere from now on. STACHYRA SIGNS UP FOR ACESBELLE Vue have moved to sign Polish rider Dawid Stachyra as a replacement for his fellow countryman Tomasz Piszcz. 25-year-old Stachyra, who rode for Ipswich in the last two seasons, will make his Aces debut in the home clash with Lakeside on Monday. Manager Jim Lynch said: “Dawid was highly recommended by Ipswich promoter John Louis and team manager Pete Simmons so we moved very quickly to bring him in. I have looked at his averages since he first came to England and he is a rider who has kept making progress. “We need two solid reserves at the bottom end of the team. Craig Cook has been doing well for us but Piszcz wasn’t giving him the level of support we needed.” bspa

BELLE VUE 47 WOLVERHAMPTON 43WOLVERHAMPTON collected a point from their 47-43 defeat at Belle Vue on Good Friday afternoon. The Monmore men needed a maximum 5-1 from the last race to secure the win but British Grand Prix star Chris Harris was the hero for the Aces after a tense finish. He also top scored for the home side with 12. Freddie Lindgren top scored for the Parrys International Wolves in front of a bumper crowd with 11 and there was an encouraging display from reserve Ricky Wells who scored 8+1, his best of the season so far. BELLE Vue ended a run of two consecutive home defeats by beating Wolverhampton 47-43 in an Elite League thriller at Kirkmanshulme Lane. The Autogate Aces, racing in front of a packed Bank Holiday crowd, went into the last heat just two points ahead and the match could have gone either way. It took three attempts to run the crunch heat but home captain Chris Harris ensured the victory by winning it to finish top scorer with three wins in his 12 points. Team boss Jim Lynch said: "This was a meeting we had to win after two narrow defeats and we did. Wolverhampton are a tough side but we came through a tough match with severakl plusses and the biggest was that we won." bellevueweb

BELLE VUE 50 BRUMMIES 42BIRMINGHAM’S trip to Belle Vue left them frustratingly short of any Elite League points after their patched-up team came close to pulling off a big away win. Brummies, without four of their first-choice seven riders, stunned the hosts by marching into a 29-19 lead thanks to 5-1s in the first two races, backed up by a further maximum in Heat 8. James Wright relished his return to Kirkmanshulme Lane, and fellow reserve Nick Morris was also impressive – but it was the Aces’ Ricky Kling who turned his meeting around in the closing stages to the great benefit of his team. Brummies had conceded a 7-1 in Heat 9 when the Aces used a tactical ride and finished first and second – but in the wrong order for the full eight points – and the visitors were six-up again after the next race as Morris took a superb win over Chris Harris. But Kling then raised his game to partner Rory Schlein in Heat 11 and Charlie Gjedde in Heat 12 for match-changing 5-1s which suddenly put the Aces ahead. Birmingham guest Darcy Ward won Heat 13 to keep his side in the hunt, but Kling combined with Hougaard for a 5-1 in the penultimate race to leave the Brummies needing to share Heat 15 to take a consolation point. But even that was denied them in a close battle between the front three riders, with Schlein the Aces’ hero as he defeated Ward with Harris in third place. BELLE Vue chiefs David Gordon and Chris Morton have embarked on a series of fact-finding missions as the move towards the new stadium gains impetus.
They have already visited the new main stand at Chesterfield Football Club as well as the Salford Rugby League development just off the M60.
And plans are also in hand to see the magnificent new Torun speedway stadium in Poland and the Vojens circuit in Denmark which, like Manchester, experiences more than its fair share of rain.
Gordon, the Autogate Aces Managing Director, and Operations Director Morton are also in discussions about the construction of the stadium. They have been plunged into new rounds of meetings following Manchester City Council’s recent decision to include the Belle Vue Sports Village project in the Eastlands Community Sports Plan. Gordon said: “We have looked at various projects undertaken by specialist construction companies. It’s all work in progress but the big word here is progress. Everything is heading towards this project happening. “Chris and I were hugely inspired by what we saw at new Chesterfield development. We came away wanting to get the diggers on site and start working. “It’s a little bit bigger than what we want but it’s a working model of how we see our new stadium.” Gordon added: “What the visit displayed to us is that while Belle Vue speedway is at the core of all our planning, what we want is bigger than that. It’s about bringing World class speedway to Manchester but it’s more than that as well. “The Chesterfield club will use their stadium for 20 or 30 football matches a year but it will be used 365 days a year. “There was an exhibition and a presentation happening when we went and they have something happening there every day, not just when there is a football match. “That’s how we feel a sports village must be used. It has to be a busy stadium involving all the other things a development like that can deliver in terms of local community projects, corporate hospitality and other events. We were open mouthed when we walked in at Chesterfield. It was brilliant. “We also had a meeting with the builders at the Salford Rugby League development. They have just built a stadium at the Fontwell Park racecourse. We were invited to the opening but couldn’t go because we were racing that night. “We’ve looked at the new main stand there on the website and it’s another example of a very busy place which ours has to be if it is to be successful.” Gordon continued: “We’ve been invited to Torun by Tony Briggs, a leading air fence builder, and to Vojens by top speedway boss Ole Olsen. Plans to see these tracks are in the pipeline. “They do have rain issues at Vojens so they have put in an extremely good drainage system which we want to look at. They also have a track cover which we are interested in including in our project so we want to see that as well. “Finding the time to go is a problem. Chris and I have two, three and four meetings a week about the new stadium. “A lot of them are about revisiting areas we have been to over the last two or three years. We put things into place then for a later date and now we have reached that point in time when we can put more detail on what has been discussed. “For example, we have had talks with possible beverage and food vendor partners but you can only take those kinds of negotiations so far until you get the green light. “We don’t want to rush into anything without doing the proper planning first and getting the infrastructure right.” He concluded: “The City of Manchester are used to putting on World events and they want to be pro actively involved with us which is fantastic as far as we are concerned because they have the expertise and logistic set-ups to handle these things in their stride. “The better the show we put on at the stadium, the better it is for Manchester.”

Rob Lyon’s men responded well from a weekend hammering at Lakeside to remain in the play-off shake up.
Kenneth Bjerre’s heat 11 winning flag briefly raised hopes of another top flight away win with the Stars only trailing by two points, but Charlie Gjedde and Ricky Kling responded in kind to give the Aces much-needed breathing space.
Belle Vue preserved their lead with two shared heats before Bjerre and Mads Korneliussen returned to double team Chris Harris for a vital away heat advantage in the finale.
Lynn tracked recent Berwick recruit Lee Complin (paid four) in the only change to the septet who went down by ten points on the opening night at Kirkmanshulme Lane in March.
Bjerre and Korneliussen led from the front along with improving reserve Filip Sitera but young Aussie Sam Masters endured a night to forget after some impressive Elite League cameos.
Lynn’s Danish number one deferred to grand prix rival Harris in the opener with Dawid Stachrya comfortably shutting out Masters. Sitera opened his account in the reserves – Complin displaying plenty of bravery on his Stars’ debut to block Craig Cook’s inside foray.
Korneliussen and skipper Olly Allen squared off the next with Patrick Hougaard surprisingly wayward on the slick surface behind team mate Gjedde. Rory Schlein’s heat four win edged the Aces two points clear in the early sparring but Bjerre scorched to the next in a season’s best 59.2 seconds.
The hosts were awarded heat six when Complin bailed out before his bike became entangled in the fence but Korneliussen and Allen hit back – Lynn’s Dane trapping sharply across from gate four.
Sitera and Masters followed Korneliussen’s example in the next but Sitera was soon in defensive mode to repel Stachrya and Kling.
Hougaard anchored a decisive home maximum in heat nine when Niels-Kristian Iversen hit the shale to move Belle Vue six clear. Korneliussen inflicted a rare home defeat on Harris, but Gjedde and Kling combined to down Allen and Complin in heat 12.
Sitera’s engine failure in the penultimate tour confirmed the hosts’ win but Lynn’s Danish double act grabbed a vital consolation in the finale.
• Aces: Harris 11+1, Stachrya 6, Gjedde 10+1, Hougaard 5+2, Schlein 8+1, Cook 1, Kling 6+2.
• Stars: Bjerre 14, Masters 0, Allen 4+1, Korneliussen 12, Iversen 3, Complin 3+1, Sitera 7.

Belle Vue 44 Poole 46 Sky Sports Elite League (Belle Vue 0 league points Poole 3 league points)
The Castle Cover Pirates pulled off a shock 46-44 win at Belle Vue, Manchester that keeps the pressure on league leaders Eastbourne whom the Pirates meet next. The win came without the services of skipper Davey Watt and Darcy Ward both of whom successfully negotiated their World Championship qualifier with 12 points each, and the injured Christian Hefenbrock who will miss the rest of Poole's action this week due to left ankle and right shoulder damage. So it was down to the makeshift Pirates in Manchester and stepping up to the plate was Russian Renat Gafurov. On a rare visit to the tight confines of the Kirkmanshulme Lane circuit Gafurov reeled off three race wins and a paid win with a paid second completing his return. That paid win was a crucial one as by following home guest Mads Korneliussen it put the Pirates ahead with just three heats remaining and left Matt Ford singing his praises loudly "He will be a happy lad when he gets home as he rode well tonight. We needed that robustness as we were without Darcy and Davey. It was going to be difficult up there but Middlo kept the boys focussed and they delivered. I am pleased with that result."

BELLE VUE 45 WOLVES 45
NEW-LOOK Wolverhampton raced to their best away result of the season with a thrilling 45-45 draw at Belle Vue on Wednesday evening.
Freddie Lindgren was the last race hero as he passed home favourite Chris Harris on the opening lap to seal the draw, but Wolves boss Peter Adams was quick to pay tribute to the vital contribution of new recruit James Grieves.
He said: “His seven points were massive in the overall context of the meeting.
“If you're looking for one particular reason why we got something from the meeting, look no further than him.”
It was a tense and tight affair with the lead repeatedly changing hands and there were never more than a couple of points between the two teams throughout the night.
Tai Woffinden and Grieves put Wolves ahead with a 4-2 in Heat 3, only for the Aces to quickly level things up two races later.
Peter Karlsson then made a fast start to win a shared Heat 6, but Rory Schlein and Kyle Howarth put the Manchester side 22-20 in front with a 4-2 of their own in Heat 7.
Following three successive drawn races Wolverhampton regained the lead in Heat 11 with a 5-1 when Ty Proctor and Lindgren produced a brilliant piece of team-riding to hold off a very strong four-lap challenge from Schlein.
But Schlein was looking good winning the battle of the big guns in Heat 13, as Lindgren followed him home in second with Harris keeping Karlsson at the back. This came as a surprise as the Wolves skipper had rattled off three straight wins up to that point, and the ensuing Aces 4-2 levelled the scores at 39-39.
Woffinden then reeled in Ricky Kling on the line to win a shared Heat 14, thus taking the match to a nervous last race decider.
In Heat 15 Harris fell at the first time of asking, but in the re-run the brilliant Lindgren passed the British skipper and Schlein held out Karlsson for the vital third place that tied the match.
BELLE VUE 45: Chris Harris 11, Rory Schlein 10+1, Charlie Gjedde 7+1, Ricky Kling 7+1, Patrick Hougaard 6+1, Craig Cook 3+2, Kyle Howarth 1
WOLVERHAMPTON 45: Freddie Lindgren 11+1, Peter Karlsson 9, Tai Woffinden 7+1, James Grieves 7, Ty Proctor 6, Tyson Burmeister 4+1, Tero Aarnio 1

BELLE VUE 45 BRUMMIES 44BIRMINGHAM will be left wondering what might have been after a dramatic 45-44 Elite League defeat at Belle Vue on Monday night. The Brummies looked to be heading for victory as they led by four-points going into the penultimate race, but a late fightback by the Manchester side saw them snatch victory by the narrowest of margins in the final race. They will take some consolation from leaving Manchester with one league point, but it was a case of so near but yet so far as the only time they were behind was after Heat 15. That said there were plenty of positives to take from the match as Daniel Nermark produced one of his best away performances of the season with a 12-point haul from his five rides. Krzysztof Kasprzak and Claus Vissing also rode well for their respective 9+1 and 9 scores. There was never more than four-points separating the two teams all night with early 4-2s putting Birmingham 14-10 ahead, but Aces quickly drew level with a maximum from Patrick Hougaard and GP star Chris Harris in Heat 6. But back came the Brummies with Nermark and Ulrich Ostergaard replying with a 4-2 in Heat 7 and their lead became 32-28 when the same two riders repeated the feat in a hard-fought Heat 10. Vissing and Kasprzak followed home race winner Rory Schlein in race 11, but the impressive Nermark and Vissing then put the Brummies seemingly within touching distance of victory with a 4-2 in Heat 12. But it was not to be as the Manchester side drew level with a Charlie Gjedde and Ricky Kling maximum in Heat 14, leaving the two teams to sweat it out in the final race of the night. And that’s where Brummies brave effort ended as Aces pair Gjedde and Schlein shot to the front ahead of Nermark and Kasprzak, with the latter falling on the opening lap. Schlein shed a chain later in the race, but Gjedde held on for the race win ahead of Nermark with the resulting 3-2 giving the Aces the victory by the most slender of margins. BELLE VUE 45: Charlie Gjedde 12, Rory Schlein 10, Patrick Hougaard 7+1, Chris Harris 7+1, Craig Cook 4+2, Ricky Kling 4+1, Lukasz Jankowski 1+1 BIRMINGHAM 44: Daniel Nermark 12, Krzysztof Kasprzak 9+1, Claus Vissing 9, Ulrich Ostergaard 5, Daniel King 5, Joe Screen 3, Ales Dryml 1+1 brummiesweb

BELLE Vue No 1 Rory Schlein will be fit for the Knockout Cup semi-final against Lakeside next week after fears the shoulder injury he suffered last week could end his season.
Schlein said last night the damage wasn't as bad as feared and was responding to physiotherapy.
He said: "I had pins and needles in my hand after the Peterborough match which was worrying. That's why I went to hospital for an X-ray. There is slight damage inside my shoulder but I will be riding in Sweden on Tuesday night.
"The hand injury I suffered a couple of weeks ago is a bigger problem. It swells up after meetings and needs icing. I'll have to put up with it until the end of the season because there is tendon trouble and it will need time to recover."

Belle Vue owner David Gordon took a parting shot at Chris Harris after he announced his return to Coventry for 2012, claiming “he didn't deliver what Belle Vue expected and required.”
The Team Great Britain skipper spent this year on loan at Kirkmanshulme Lane, but struggled to find his best form and racked up an average of just 7.97 points.
Harris also failed to hit his stride in the Grand Prix series and needed a wild card from series organisers BSI Speedway and the FIM to keep his World Championship spot for 2012.
While it was no surprise to see Bomber return to his parent club on a bargain average, Bees’ decision to announce the Cornishman’s comeback the day after Aces’ last meeting has left a bad taste in some Belle Vue fans’ mouths.
Gordon says Harris’ lacklustre campaign for the Manchester club had ruled him out of their side for next year anyway.
He told the Manchester Evening News: “He was never part of our 2012 plans. He didn't deliver what Belle Vue expected and required. It was clearly a tough season all round.
“We were patient with him but maybe we asked too much of him under the circumstances.”

The Aces were cleared by the British Speedway Promoters' Association to make the announcement, even though the usual formalities have to be completed. Schlein has ridden on loan from Coventry this season but Gordon will be entering into negotiations to but the rider outright. Gordon said: “We were as keen as our supporters to keep Rory after the season he’s had. He wanted to stay and we are delighted that we have agreed a deal with him so quickly." www.bellevueaces
