Poole star Darcy Ward says he will be back on a bike in “four or five weeks” after breaking his shoulder and wrist while training on his motocross bike.
Ward was riding with Pirates colleagues Chris Holder and Davey Watt at an organised motocross practise event near Salisbury, when a jump caught him out.
The Queenslander has confirmed he will be fit to chase a record-breaking third World Under-21 title and will not sit out any meetings for his new Swedish Elitserien club Lejonen.
But he looks set to miss his Polish First Division outfit Gdansk’s opening fixture and will also lose a handful of bookings for Poole, who will have to recruit a short-term replacement.
Ward defended his decision to take to the motocross jumps just a few days before Pirates’ opening fixture at Eastbourne on Sunday.
Speaking exclusively to speedwaygp.com, he said: “Motocross riders are the fittest riders in the world and this is the best way to keep fit. I want to be better and better every year and fitter and fitter.
“Finding a place to even practise speedway in Britain and do any testing is very difficult. So we went riding to stay on top of our fitness and it was just one of those things.
“It was the smallest jump on the track, I just went over and it was maybe a little bit greasy there, it was a bit windy and it just caught me out. I landed a little bit strange and high-sided over the bike.
“It wasn’t as if it was a high-speed crash. It was pretty slow, but sometimes they’re the worst ones.”
Many stars of the shale from world champion Tomasz Gollob to riders bidding to break into the British National League see motocross as the ideal way to stay in shape and gain bike time.
And Ward says he took every safety precaution possible. He added: “It was a proper motocross practise day. There was no racing or anything like that. It was just everyone out having a practise.
“There were marshals, paramedics and all that kind of stuff, so it wasn’t as if we were just riding around in the bush. We were doing it as safely as we possibly could and it was just one thing that went wrong. Sometimes these things happen.
“None of us like going to the gym, but trying to find a place to ride speedway in this country is pretty hard work. Staying on a bike and keeping fit are priorities, and it’s hard work to do when you can’t find a place to ride.
“It’s better to be riding around here than drive to Slovenia, Italy or somewhere like that to go for a ride on a speedway bike. It would cost a fortune and I think it’s a lot better for us to stay around Poole.”
Ward is gutted to be ruled out of Pirates’ opening meetings. His fellow countryman Jason Doyle will cover for the 18-year-old until he is fit to resume his duties.
But the three-time Aussie Under-21 champion has no intention of being absent for long. He said: “I’ll only be out four or five weeks – something like that. It’s not a huge layoff. It’s minimal.
“They’re fractures which will heal and I’ll do everything I can to make sure that happens. I’ll be going in oxygen chambers and I’ll seek the best medical advice to get better as quick as possible.
“I’m sorry to the Poole fans. I feel as if I’ve let everyone down and it’s the last thing I’d want to do.
"I’m hoping for a big year and this wasn’t the way to start it off. But I’ll do everything in my power to be back soon.”
Poole Pirates have drafted in Australian star Jason Doyle to cover for the injured Darcy Ward.
Doyle has been left without a club in Britain this term after ending his 2010 campaign on a strong 5.24 average.
Despite this figure falling considerably below Ward’s 6.63 mark, co-promoter Matt Ford is convinced he can step up to the plate.
He said: “Jason is in the country and was hoping to get a ride this term over here and, as our asset, it makes sense that we use him.
“I know that there is a gulf between his average and that of Darcy, but those that have heard me speak about Doyley before will know I do rate the kid and believe he can punch well above his weight.”
Doyle will be back in Pirates colours for their challenge against Eastbourne on Sunday, where the Dorset side will have to do without Polish racer Rafal Dobrucki.
Ford added: “Sunday will be a good test for Jason and I know he is looking forward to it.
“He will get an extra ride because Rafal (Dobrucki) will be missing. His Polish side (Zielona Gora), while willing to honour all of our Elite League meetings, has asked for him to be available in Poland on Sunday.
“Rider replacement will therefore operate and I am happy enough for that to happen as this is a challenge fixture designed really to get the boys to blow away the cobwebs.”

Reduced Pirates Struggle in Sussex.
A curtain-raising catastrophe befell the Castle Cover Pirates in their first leg challenge at Eastbourne (Sunday), as the Eagles ran home convincing 57-33 winners against a heavily depleted Poole side. Already without Rafal Dobrucki the Pirates soon found themselves another rider down when Dave Watt was forced to withdraw from the meeting after an innocous fall caused by laying his bike down to try and avoid Dawid Lampart. Watt sustained an ankle injury in the process and Poole manager Neil Middleditch was put to the test in managing his busy reserves as best he could. It took Poole 6 heats before they could celebrate a race winner, Dennis Andersson delivering the honours against former Pirates Lukas Dryml and Bjarne Pedersen. The impressive Andersson was a winner again in heat 9, the Pirates being denied a potential 5-1 advantage as Woodward made a late challenge on Christian Hefenbrock. Chris Holder was the only other Poole ride to take the chequered flag, like Andersson he achieved it twice, winning heats 11 and 15 proving to be Jonas Kylmakorpi’s nemesis on both occassions. As well as Watt’s withdrawal, Russian Renat Gafurov damaged a shoulder in heat 8 and was eventually forced to withdraw from his final outing.
Eastbourne 57 - Dryml 11; Kylmakorpi 11+2; Bridger 10+1; Pedersen 9+4; Woodward 8; Gustafsson 5; Lampart 3
Poole 33 - Andersson 12+2, Holder 9; Hefenbrock 7+2; Doyle 4; Gafurov ; Watt DNR; R/R for R.Dobruck

TEENAGE Swede Dennis Andersson won three of his five heats in a stunning home debut last night helping depleted Poole Castle Cover Pirates to an impressive 15-point opening win against Eastbourne at Wimborne Road. European Under-19 champion Andersson, fresh from his double figure haul at Eastbourne in the first leg on Sunday, scooped the Rider of the Night in another eye-catching display, despite a nasty-looking fall in one of his heats. The highly-rated Swede, 19, admitted: “I enjoyed the meeting and was pleased with my performance. “It was disappointing to have a fall but I guess you have to try these things.” While Pirates No 1 Chris Holder (12) scored one more point than Andersson (11), it was also a night of heroics that saw Davey Watt produce an inspirational captain’s performance despite a late fitness test to ride after x-rays revealed no broken bones in his foot after Sunday’s crash at Eastbourne. The brave Poole skipper was unbeaten in his first three rides but then took an awkward fall while chasing Eastbourne top man and ex-Pirate Bjarne Pedersen. With Russian Renat Gafurov (8+1) and Christian Hefenbrock (5+2) both showing impressive home debuts and Jason Doyle returning paid nine points, the Dorset side proved too strong for rivals Eastbourne. However, the Eagles claimed an aggregate win 96-87 over the two legs, but it could have been a different scenario had Pirates not lost the services of Watt and Gafurov through injury so early in the first leg encounter in Sussex. Pirates team boss Neil Middleditch said afterwards: “After all the problems we’ve had with injuries and the non availability of Rafal Dobrucki, I was very pleased with the way the team slotted together so quickly. “I said after the Eastbourne meeting on Sunday that I was happy with my reserves and once again Dennis and Christian gave us a tail that I’m hoping will wag like this all season!”
Poole 54 - C.Holder 12 (1,3,3,3,2); D.Andersson 11 (3,3,FD,2,3); D.Watt 9 (3,3,3,F,0,1'); R.Gafurov 8+1 (3,1',0,3,1); J.Doyle 8+1 (0,2,1,3,2'); C.Heffenbrock 5+2 (1,2',2',0) K.Newman (0)
Eastbourne 39 - B.Pedersen 16 (2,3,6,2,3); C.Woodward 7 (2,2,2,1,0); L.Bridger 7 (2,2,0,1,2); J.Kylmakorpi 5+2 (1,1',2,1'); S.Gustafsson 3+3 (1',1',0,1'); D.Lampart 1 (0,0,1,0); L.Dryml 0 (3)

Pirates have 9 points to ‘Shield’
By virtue of a solid all-round team performance the Poole Castle Cover Pirates have given themselves a healthy 9 point lead to take to Wolverhampton for the second leg of the Elite Shield. With contributions throughout the Poole team tonight with all 6 riders weighing in with vital points they proved a little too strong for the Midlanders, despite the visitors having good returns from veteran Peter Karlsson and the youthful Tai Woffinden. The Pirates began with back to back maximum heat advantages but were then slowly pegged back as Wolverhampton denied the Pirates a further race winner until Russian Renat Gafurov took the flag in heat 8. Two heats earlier Gafurov had to pick himself from an awkward fall caused when the luckless Tyson Burmeister got out of shape right in front of him, a move that cost the American a place in the re-run 6th heat. It was Gafurov again in heat 10 who delivered the goods, following Chris Holder home with the previously unbeaten Woffinden trailing in last. That 5-1 gave Poole something of a cushion - a 10 point lead - which Wolverhampton instantly tried to reduce by introducing Freddie Lindgren as a tactical. Poole skipper Dave Watt though had different ideas and with Dennis Andersson heading home the younger Lindgren (Ludvig) Poole trumped the move. Holder and Watt put the match beyond the reach of the visitors with a 4-2 in heat 13 but Woffinden, under the black and white, then won heat 14 to keep Wolverhampton in the tie. Skipper Watt signed off with a tapes to flag win as the final race was shared, Woffinden shrugging off the interests of Chris Holder in no uncertain way.
Scorers:
Poole 52 - D.Watt 13+0(2,2,2,3,1); C.Holder 11+0(3,2,3,3,0); J.Doyle 9+2(2,2,1',3,1'); R.Gafurov 8+3(2',0,1',3,2'); D.Andersson 7+1(3,0,1',1,2); K.Newman 4+2(2',1',1,0)
Wolverhampton 43 - T.Woffinden 13+1 (3,3,0,6^,1'); F.Lindgren 12 (1,3,4^,2,2); P.Karlsson 9 (3,3,3,0); T.Proctor 4 (1,0,1,2); L.Lindgren 3 (0,1,2,0); T.Burmeister 1(FD,DQ,0,1'); R.Wells 1 (1,0,R,0)

Full Seven to Face New Look Robins POOLE parade a full-strength side for the first time this season in their opening home Sky Sports Elite League match of the season against rivals Swindon on Wednesday with team boss Neil Middleditch declaring: “It will be great to have a seven-man team to work with again for the first time since last October!” Super-cool teenage Swede Dennis Andersson returns to the Pirates fold on Wednesday night, along with Jason Doyle to link up with Darcy Ward, now back after a pre- season broken shoulder and wrist. Middleditch said: "It will be something of a novelty to have seven riders to look after. Hopefully we will see the collective effect of a full side, although to be honest we haven't done too badly so far have we? “It’s great to have Darcy back and as he showed at the weekend he is really hungry for points and both Jason and Dennis have made terrific starts to the season. “We need all three to maintain that form as we have a tough schedule ahead." Castle Cover Pirates have three matches in the space of just five days, starting on Wednesday with the visit of Swindon (7.30pm) before a Good Friday trip to King's Lynn and then back at Dorset on Sunday (3pm) to face Eastbourne once again. Andersson missed the Pirates defeat at the hands of table-topping Eastbourne on Saturday as he was en-route to successfully negotiating the first hurdle of the World Under-21 Championships which he has targeted as one of his priorities this season. Australian middle-order man Doyle was performing ably for his Premier League club Rye House. The availability of the pair is a major boost to Poole who will be looking to return to winning ways following the weekend defeat in Sussex. * WEDNESDAY’S visitors Swindon have strengthened their side on the eve of the clash against the Pirates, bringing in two Danish internationals, Nikolai Klindt and Jesper B Monberg, giving them a far more potent look. The two Danes make their debuts for the club - linking with a British bulldog spearhead of Scott Nicholls and Simon Stead. Castle Cover Pirates team boss Middleditch warned: “Without question this is the strongest side Swindon have declared this season and will be a severe test for us in our opening league encounter at home on Wednesday.” (from) Poole - Chris Holder (8.39), Davey Watt (7.59), Darcy Ward (6.63), Jason Doyle (5.24), Renat Gafurov (4.52), Dennis Andersson (4.00), Christian Hefenbrock (3.23) Team manager Neil Middleditch Swindon - Scott Nicholls (8.54), Simon Stead (7.47), Nikolai Klindt (6.58), Maciej Janowski (5.00), Jesper B Monnberg (4.51), Cory Gathercole (3.85), Justin Sedgemen (3.27) Team manager Ronnie Russell pooleweb

Holder Denies Robins a Point
An inspirational heat 15 pass by Chris Holder on the impressive Maciej Janowski secured all three league points for the Poole Castle Cover Pirates just as the visitors looked as though they were going to snatch a consolation point from this hard fought contest. Whilst the Pirates began superbly with back to back 5-1 heat advantages the Wiltshire side slowly worked their way back into the match and in a dramatic heat 8 they were awarded a 5-1 after reserve switch Dennis Andersson accidentally clipped the front wheel of his partner Christian Hefenbrock as he pursued the two Robins - Monberg and Sedgemen - who until then had scored just one point between them. The contact by Andersson was enough to throw Hefenbrock off his machine and as he somersaulted down the back straight ripping out several sections of the safety fence, the Poole camp feared the worse. It was evident that Andersson was going to be disqualified as the primary cause and with the medical crew insisting that Hefenbrock, who was reporting no pain, be checked over at the local Poole General Hospital, the Pirates would have no representative. But referee Ronnie Allan awarded the heat and after some confusion it was confirmed that third place would go to Hefenbrock. The 5-1 reverse left just two points between the sides but a brilliant ride from Darcy Ward in heat 9 to round Scott Nicholls with late replacement to the meeting Gary Havelock backing up in third the Pirates extended their advantage. Janowski then led home Holder in heat 10 as the Robins negated the previous heat score but skipper Davey Watt rose to the occasion with another breathtaking ride to conquer Nicholls as the see-sawing 4-2's were fought out. Poole gave themselves some much sought daylight when Andersson and Ward rattled home a 5-1 in heat 12 only for Watt and Holder to follow it up in heat 13 to secure victory on the night. Facing a 12 point deficit Swindon used Janowski as a tactical ride but Andersson gracefully charged by him thus maintaining double figure points between the two sides. But the Robins weren't quite done for and in heat 15 they were sitting on a 5-1 that would have earned them that consolation before Holder dug deep into his repertoire and swept by Janowski. Poole boss Matt Ford was a happy man come the fall of the heat 15 chequered fan admitting "Swindon made us work for that but I was pleased with the way the side dug in after we lost Christian. It was a horrible looking fall and intial reports are that we believe he has escaped any serious injury but it was important that he went to the hospital as a precationary measure. I understand he will have a full check over and hopefully for the lad the news will be good. The team came really strong in the end and you can't ask for more than that from your side"

RUSSIAN Renat Gafurov became the new darling of the Pirates fans with his best performance in Poole colours helping the home team to a comfortable victory over top of the table Eastbourne. The 28-year old, known as “The Gaffer” at Wimborne Road, returned a double figure score which proved the catalyst in Eagles failing to pick up any league points for the first time this season. Gafurov was unbeaten in his four programmed rides before losing out to visiting No 1 Bjarne Pedersen in the nominated riders heat 15. But it was the manner of his 10 (paid 13), demonstrating plenty of speed, attacking from the back and delighting the large holiday crowd. Captain Davey Watt, who had an off day in the sizzling April heat in Dorset, admitted afterwards: “Renat was just awesome out there today and Darcy (Ward) would surely have had a maximum had it not been for a tapes offence. “With Jason (Doyle) also scoring freely and Christian Hefenbrock doing exceptionally well after that horror fall last Wednesday, I think it speaks volumes for the character of our team. “I was off-the boil today and Chris (Holder) dropped some points on the way, but we still had the beating of Eastbourne and have taken the full quota of points off them which is excellent. “They have been flying this year so if I can get my game going then I think it is watch out for the Pirates." Teenage Swede Dennis Andersson was forced to sit out his final programmed ride after aggravating a rib injury in a track crash in Poland on Saturday night. Poole boss Matt Ford revealed: “I received a call from a distressed Dennis on Saturday night saying he was in hospital after being run over in Poland. “I feared the worst, but full credit to him. Despite suffering painful rib injuries he still came back to England and rode, winning Heat 2 in a canter. “It shows that he is not only a very handy rider, he’s a pretty courageous kid too.” The Pirates were all round too strong for Eastbourne but now go into a break until Thursday when they travel to Swindon in the Sky Sports Elite league. Pirates: Holder's heroics steal the limelight
ALL eyes were on the birthday boy but it was Chris Holder who stole the show at Wimborne Road.
Darcy Ward, deservedly the centre of attention in recent weeks, was the talk of the town as he prepared to line up for Pirates on his 19th birthday.
Ward had 24 hours earlier done little to quell the hype surrounding him after he claimed no fewer than three victories over world champion Tomasz Gollob for his Swedish club.
Last night, the world under-21 king did his burgeoning reputation no harm whatsoever with an eight-point haul that would have been greater but for a mechanical problem.
But if the Pirates public were discussing Ward on their way into the stadium, they must have been waxing lyrical about his composed compatriot as they headed for the exits wearing wide grins.
Holder was irrepressible. Lakeside had no answer to the GP contender as he secured the most majestic of maximums.
While this dominant display from Pirates was about more than one rider, it was Holder who set the tone for the commanding performance that continued the hosts’ good start to the campaign.
And with skipper Davey Watt rejuvenated, hard man Jason Doyle battling through the pain barrier and Renat Gafurov solid as a rock, the result was never in doubt.
After Elite League Pairs champions Holder and Ward had paraded the trophy prior to tapes-up, Pirates underlined their credentials for the ultimate prize.
Lakeside made a far-from-ideal opening when skipper Lee Richardson suffered a mechanical problem at the start line, forcing Stuart Robson to stand in.
And Pirates did not need a second invitation to capitalise as Holder and Gafurov secured a serene maximum. The Russian got off to a flyer and with Poole’s number one cruising through on the penultimate lap, the points were safely pocketed.
Dennis Andersson followed up with a comfortable win of his own, although the hosts missed out on the chance of a 4-2 when Christian Hefenbrock took a tumble.
It continued to be one-way traffic as Ward stormed to victory in a rapid time, with Doyle, bravely back in the saddle just days after dislocating his shoulder, showing grit to secure a 5-1.
Something special was required to follow that perfor mance but it came in heat four courtesy of Hefenbrock and Watt, who produced the race of the night.
Hefenbrock got out in front before Peter Ljung edged ahead, only for the persistent Pirates reserve to reclaim pole position after a ding-dong battle. If that was not enough to get the home fans on their feet, Watt’s terrific burst from last to second certainly was as Pirates spectacularly opened up an 18-6 advantage.
Ward looked like he had done all the hard work when, having been slow out of the traps, he blasted from third to first in heat five. But after running wide, he appeared to suffer a mechanical issue, allowing Richardson and Kauko Nieminen to hit back in some style.
But the Lakeside revival was brief as Pirates immediately rediscovered their golden touch thanks to Holder. Ably assisted by Gafurov, the 23-year-old never looked troubled as he roared clear.
Not to be outdone, Watt was next to chip in. With Adam Shields hunting double points as a tactical rider, the Pirates captain minimised the damage by taking the chequered flag with time to spare.
Honours were even when Robson defiantly held off Gafurov and Hefenbrock, before Doyle and Ward combined brilliantly. Doyle darted through the middle of fast-starting Ljung and Robert Mear to take the lead before Ward compounded Lakeside’s woes by firing up the inside to claim a 5-1.
For the third time of the evening, Holder and his reliable team-mate Gafurov claimed top marks.
Watt, looking back to his best, then defied Lakeside’s second double-points bid as he powered away from Richardson.
With Pirates now 18 points clear, the game was well and truly up for the visitors.
And Ward grabbed his second success before Holder made it four from four with a tapes-to-flag win.
Doyle led Andersson to the Dorset outfit’s seventh 5-1 in 14 heats.
Rewarded for his efforts alongside Holder, Gafurov was named in the nominated final heat. The race did not go to plan for the 28-year-old as he failed to catch Richardson and Shields and finished last.
But it was fitting that Holder had the final say to get the party started.
While the trailing trio battled for minor points, the Aussie marched clear of the field to bring down the curtain in familiar fashion.

POOLE 55 BUILDBASE BEES 31
COVENTRY Buildbase Bees were left with no points from an Elite League meeting for the first time this season with Poole’s title credentials on full display at Wimborne Road on Monday.
A weakened Bees team, without No.1 Hans Andersen and Polish sensation Przemyslaw Pawlicki, were beaten by 24-points in a meeting curtailed one race early after an horrific-looking crash in Heat 14.
The Pirates unfortunately lost Christian Hefenbrock after he hit the fence in Heat 2, but his reserve colleague Dennis Andersson took the opportunity for extra rides to pile up the points, and World Under-21 Champion Darcy Ward continued his stunning start to the season with a paid maximum.
Bees at times managed to limit the damage with skipper Edward Kennett winning his first two rides – but the match went away from them during a mid-meeting spell in which the Pirates carded four successive 5-1s.
The match came to an early end when Josh Auty, who had given everything in effort, collided with Andersson on the exit of turn two in Heat 14 and both riders careered into the back-straight fence. Thankfully both walked away, but with the fence badly damaged and the curfew looming, the final race of the night was not run, with the result in no doubt.
Bees co-boss Alun Rossiter said: “No complaints about the result, Poole are a very good side who are well dialled-in to their home track and we were out-gated too often to be able to stay with them.
”It looks like Josh is okay after the crash although he’ll be sore tomorrow, and I thought he rode very well for us. It also looks like Ryan (Fisher) damaged his bike when he came off in his first ride, and he was a bit all over the shop after that.
”We have to move on from it quickly, I’ve always said that nothing is going to be decided at this time of year, and now we have to look forward to hopefully a better night at Birmingham on Thursday.”
POOLE 55: Dennis Andersson 12+2, Darcy Ward 10+2, Chris Holder 10+1, Renat Gafurov 9+2, Davey Watt 7+1, Jason Doyle 7, Christian Hefenbrock 0.
COVENTRY 31: Edward Kennett 9, Scott Nicholls 7+2, Josh Auty 6, Kenni Larsen 4+1 Ryan Fisher 4+1, Richard Sweetman 1+1, Przemyslaw Pawlicki r/r.

@poolespeedway poole speedwayHt 15 D.Ward, P.Karlsson, C.Holder, T.Woffinden 4-2 (56-36) POOLE 56 WOLVES 36WOLVERHAMPTON suffered a further injury setback in their defeat at Elite League title favourites Poole on Wednesday.
Parrys International Wolves contained the hosts well in the first half of the meeting, but lost Ludvig Lindgren after a crash in Heat 10, when he was impeded after team-mate Tai Woffinden had already gone down. Lindgren was taken away for checks on his shoulder and the Pirates came on strong in the closing stages to extend their lead to 20-points. Wolves had made an excellent start with Ty Proctor winning Heat 1, and they were just two points down after Heat 4 despite a fall for Woffinden in the previous race. Dennis Andersson’s last-gasp pass on Proctor in Heat 8 for a 5-1 with Renat Gafurov enabled the Pirates to move clear, and they took another maximum in the re-run of Heat 10 with Woffinden disqualified and Lingdren injured. Lindgren’s elder brother Freddie took a tactical ride in Heat 11 but he was beaten by Darcy Ward and unusually failed to win a race throughout the meeting. Peter Karlsson’s tactical ride did not result in double points in Heat 13 as he was on the receiving end of a 5-1 from Ward and Chris Holder which ensured the home side would take all three from the meeting. Karlsson had earlier won two races and Woffinden added a pair of victories himself from an up-and-down night, but the Pirates only ran four last places all evening. POOLE 56: Darcy Ward 12+1, Davey Watt 10+1, Chris Holder 10, Renat Gafurov 9+2, Dennis Andersson 7+2, Jason Doyle 7+1, Christian Hefenbrock 1. The Castle Cover Pirates survived a hard fought contest against seaside rivals Eastbourne to move level with them at the top of the Sky Sports Elite league table. The Pirates pulled off a 54-40 win to maintain their 100% home record, with much of the action being edge of the seat excitement. The Pirates welcomed back skipper Davey Watt and Darcy Ward after the pair missed Monday night’s win at Belle Vue and both the Australians dropped just one point a piece. Skipper Watt was held at bay in his first ride by the impressive young Swede Simon Gustafsson but then claimed four straight wins, whilst Ward conceded his only point to an opponent when former Pirate Bjarne Pedersen out-foxed him in heat 13. Ward though had produced a breathtaking piece of speedway two heats previously when he squeezed through the narrowest of gaps to deny Pedersen, on a tactical ride, maximum points. Ward admitted “I don’t make things easy for myself as I am not gating and I am having to take some chances. It would be easier if I could make some starts.” Easier it might but every time he misses the gate it is a question of biting your nails and enjoying him stalking his opponents. Watt also managed to beat the black and white when he led Gustafsson home in heat 12, but even with both tactical options the league leaders refused to give in and it took a winning ride from Gafurov (his second of the night) to give the Pirates some breathing space going into the final heat. The visitors needed a maximum 5-1 to escape with a league point but it was Watt and Ward who combined for that heat score to clinch all three league points for the Pirates, their 30th of the season. Poole Castle Cover Pirates eased their way into the semi-finals of the KO Cup and remain on course to defend the title they won in 2010. Nursing a healthy 34 point from the first leg the Pirates were never in danger of finishing-off the Robins, despite having to ride the meeting without Dennis Andersson. The impressive, free-scoring young Swede sustained wrist and leg injuries in Sweden on Tuesday and spent several hours in hospital being checked out.
Andersson's absence didn't affect his major racing partner Chris Holder who maintained his 100% cup record in 2011 and afterwards Holder saluted the sporting gesture of his team-mate Darcy Ward. "It was good to get another full house and I have to thank Darcy for easing up at the end of heat 15 and letting me through. I didn't think he would be able to make it off gate 4 again like he had done in 13 and that's why I was happy enough to take the outside. I managed the switch back and it was pretty cool and yes its nice to have another full maximum". Holder had made a virtual copycat move in heat 15 to that of his younger team-mate as the two Australians once again provided good entertainment for the Poole fans - those who had taken advantage of the reduced admissions to witness Poole claim a 55-41 win on the night to set themselves up for a tie against either Eastbourne or Wolverhampton in September. But it wasn't just the awesome Aussies who had the fans on their feet, local lad Kyle Newman, retaining his place at reserve with Christian Hefenbrock still ruled out with injuries that could keep him sidelined for around a month, producing an excellent heat 7 ride. Just moments after being forced to the deck as Darcy ward swept across the line and took down Swindon's Nicolai Klindt who in turn collected Newman, the young Poole lad was able to get ahead of Klindt in the re-run and worked hard to keep him at bay. Klindt though lined up the youngster and passed him only for Newman to retaliate with an equally good pass of his own. But coming off the final turn Klindt had found the slightly faster line and just stole the verdict for the point that shared the heat. By that time the Robins were still waiting for their first race winner and that eventually came in the guise of tactical ride Simon Stead in heat 9 who dented skipper Davey Watt's maximum aspirations, but the unbeaten tag was still firmly round the necks of faultless Holder and never-say-die Ward. The younger Aussie produced a ruthless inside drive at the first turn to go under Scott Nicholls in heat 11 and then two heats later demonstrated motorcyling skill of the highest order as he switched back from gate 4 to slice by Nicholls and Stead with leader Chris Holder seemingly oblivious to the move. But two heats later, after Swindon had claimed their second tactical victor of the tie through Klindt in the penultimate heat, it was Holder who made a copycat manoeuvre as Ward made the running off gate 2. As the chequered flag beckoned Ward waved Holder through to ensure that the Poole number one made it two full maximums in as many Wimborne Road meetings and sent him off to Cardiff with a perfect five card trick up his sleeve.
Poole 55 (117) - C.Holder 15 (3,3,3,3,3), D.Ward 13+2 (3,3,3,2,2), D.Watt 11 (3,3,2,3), J.Doyle 7+1 (R,1,3,1,2),R.Gafurov 7+1 (3,1,2,1), K.Newman 1 (1,0,0,0), K.Howarth 1 (0,1,0)

The brilliance of Darcy Ward and Chris Holder ensured that the Poole Castle Cover Pirates retained their unbeaten home tag, despite losing their 100% home points record for 2011 in their latest Sky Sports Elite league fixture against the famous Belle Vue Aces. Poole went into action without either first choice reserve of Christian Hefenbrock (injured) and Renat Gafurov (engaged in Russian league fixture) and had Dennis Andersson still carrying an injury sustained last week in Sweden and for much of the meeting the Aces looked set to capitalise. But two brilliant 5-1 advantages from the Ward & Holder combo and a battling 11 points from skipper Dave Watt managed to see the Pirates scrape home 47-42 which banks them 2 league points, and gives the Aces a consolation point. Holder, having had back to back full maximums in the Pirates cup encounter against Swindon continued his winning ways whilst Ward was also in unbeatable form, but on both occasions that the pairing took to track together Chris Holder graciously allowed Ward to take the winning position so that the youngster could revel in collecting his first full maximum as a Pirate. "It was time for me to pay back Darcy for what he did for me last week" admitted Holder, "he waved me through then so I thought it was the least I could do, but in heat 15 I had to keep looking back for him and I began to wonder whether he would ever catch up" Watching from the stands was Ward's mother who could feel justifiably proud of her boy as the Pirates pulled two points clear at the top of the Sky Sports Elite league table, and it was a delighted Poole skipper, Dave Watt who said afterwards "That was a hard fought win but I'm sure glad we pulled it off in the end." He then quipped "Jeez, I don't know what you have to do to get into heat 15 with this team, I scored 11 points and it still didn't earn me the right to go in the last one, but those lads know what they are doing." The irony of the meeting was that the star of the Aces side was undoubtedly their reserve Ricky Kling - a Poole asset - who stormed to paid 15 return from 7 rides. Kling was one of just two finishers in the opening heat as Aces number one Chris Harris fell on the pit turn and Poole's Dennis Andersson came unstuck on turn 4. Kling followed Holder home and then partnered Craig Cook to a lead-taking 5-1 in heat 2. It took the Pirates up until that first Ward/Holder 5-1 to regain the lead and thanks to the sterling efforts of Jason Doyle to split Rory Schlein, doing his best to slow Doyle down in the turns, and Kling, the Pirates held the upper hand going into the final heat when Ward and Holder duly struck again. pooleweb Poole = 471. Lynn old boy Darcy Ward returned to haunt his former employers with a five-ride maximum tonight in Elite League table-topping Poole’s victory at Wimborne Road. Ward repeated his paid 15 haul from the Pirates’ last home outing against Belle Vue to dent the Stars’ play-off ambitions. Rob Lyon’s men never looked likely to pick up their fifth consecutive losing league point on the road with Czech World Team Cup duo Tomas Topinka and Filip Sitera failing to score. Lynn, however, remained third in the table with Poole increasing their lead over Eastbourne at the summit to six points. Holder set the tone in the opener with light drizzle overhead in a 59 second tour – Dennis Andersson shutting out Kenneth Bjerre down the back straight for an opening maximum. Sitera suffered a heavy fall in the reserves around the bottom bend following a tight tussle into turn one between Lasse Bjerre and Renat Gafurov. Bjerre junior was outnumbered in the re-run, but able to keep Kyle Newman at bay behind the fast-trapping Russian. Lynn skipper Olly Allen provided nuisance value to Davey Watt to allow Mads Korneliussen to briefly check the home onslaught. Lasse Bjerre replaced Sitera in heat four but had to settle for a watching brief as the imperious Ward opened his account with a stylish gate to subdue Niels-Kristian Iversen – the opposing duo no strangers after both failing in their GP qualifying bid over the weekend in Croatia. Jason Doyle hunted down Topinka in the skirmish for the minor spoils in heat five but Watt was too cute for Kenneth Bjerre at the head of affairs to maintain Poole’s eight point lead. Holder’s class prevailed in heat six after Iversen trapped in front of the Australian ace before compatriot Ward used every inch of his home track to repel the game Korneliussen. Andersson pick-pocketed Lasse Bjerre in heat eight exiting the final bend, but Newman edged Topinka for another Poole heat advantage to move 14 clear. Lyon deployed Iversen on a tactical with partial success – the Danish World Team Cup racer and Lass Bjerre tracking Watt to the flag for a rare away advantage. Holder’s heroics again foiled Korneliussen who switched to defensive mode on the last lap under pressure from Andersson. Kenneth Bjerre appeared on a black and white helmet raid in heat 11, but Ward and Gafurov squared off the race to protect the hosts’ huge lead. Ward sealed all three league points in a heat 13 thriller alongside Elite League best pairs’ winning colleague Holder before the duo served up an encore in the finale. edp POOLE PIRATES = 581. A point for Lakeside increases the pressure on Swales and his team In one of the most dramatic and thrilling climaxes to a speedway meeting ever at the Place of Pace, the Poole Castle Cover Pirates protected their unbeaten home league record of 2011 by a single point against play-off pushing Lakeside Hammers. Facing the prospect of losing to Lakeside Chris Holder produced an absolutely incredible ride to pass both the Hammers, Robert Mear and Lee Richardson to deny the visitors what surely would have been a match winning 5-1. Just how Holder managed to stay aboard and find the speed and room to blitz by was sensational and had the whole stadium rising as one to applaud the brilliance. When questioned Holder admitted "well it couldn't have been impossible because I am stood here talking about it, but it was a bit tight. I'm just stoked that I pulled it off and then me and Watty were able to ride the last race as though it was a final". Indeed it was a final as the Pirates entered the heat trailing by three points, after Renat Gafurov timely chose his moment to open his points account with a winning heat 14 ride, against the odds, and so nothing other than first and second places would assist the Pirates cause at the top of the table, especially as nearest rivals King's Lynn were beating Eastbourne in Norfolk. The responsibility fell jointly on the shoulders of Holder and skipper Dave Watt who had endured a controversial and slow start to the meeting. He was harshly disqualified in an eventful heat three when Peter Ljung ran him out to the fence, after Kauko Nieminen had fallen first time of asking. That left Renat Gafurov and Ljung in a third attempt match race but the run of bad luck that has recently struck the Pirates was out in force when Gafurov clipped the fence and went down leaving Ljung as the only finisher and a rare 0-3 heat score in Lakeside's favour. Watt was then on the wrong end of 1-5's in his next two rides as Lakeside began to take control of the meeting despite losing the service of Piotr Swiderski after his fall in heat 4. Without the calming influence of regular boss Neil Middleditch who had been called away during the meeting on urgent personal business, it was down to former Bournemouth Buccaneer manager Garry May to try and influence the Pirates' recovery, and the two Aussies responded in the most dramatic of fashions. A battle royale was being played out as Watt and Richardson were trading places with nothing more than a tyres breadth between them at times, but then some distance behind Ljung fell forcing the heat to be stopped. Adding to the tension, referee Barbara Horley appeared to delay the decision to disqualify Ljung from the re-run and once she did the pressure immediately switched to Richardson who knew he just had to split the Pirates to take the league spoils. Again Watt rose to the occasion and quickly established a lead and the stadium erupted as Holder was urged on to make the pass. Sensationally Holder delivered and the Pirates snatched the meeting 44-43. Poole 44: C.Holder 14+1 (0,3,3,3,3,2'), D.Andersson 12+1 (3,3,2',3,1), D.Watt 11 (FDq,1,1,3,3,3) , R.Gafurov 3 (F,R,R,0,3), G.Havelock 3 (2,0,0,1,0), I.Bondarenko 1 (0,1,0,) Rider replacement operated for Darcy Ward Lakeside 43: P.Ljung 11+1 (3,3,2,2,1',FDq), L.Richardson 9+4 (2,2',2',1',1',1), R.Mear 8+1 (3,0,2,1',2), K.Nilsson 8 (1,2,1,2,0,2), K.Nieminen 7+2 (1',FDq,3,1',2),P.Swiderski 0 (Fx) withdrew from the meeting. Poole weathered the early storm to run out convincing winners and extend their lead at the top of the table although both sides continued to be hit by the injury jinx. With the Pirates back at full strength, and their three returning riders - Jason Doyle, Christian Hefenbrock and Darcy Ward - all figuring prominently in the score card they had to ride out most of the meeting without Dennis Andersson who sustained a swollen right wrist in a heat 6 first bend incident. Visitors Wolves arrived without either of their top two riders - Freddie Lindgren (head, neck and back injury) and Peter Karlsson (hand and knee injury) and they finished with a further casualty as Ty Proctor was forced to withdraw due to concussion after taking a fall in heat 8. It was Proctor who steered Wolverhampton to an opening heat advantage as he headed home Chris Holder with Wolves’ guest Chris Harris denying Dennis Andersson any points from heat one. But Doyle and Hefenbrock matched that opening heat score to level the match and it took a Ward and Hefenbrock 5-1 to inch Poole ahead after four heats. The meeting took time to get into its stride with a number of starting infringements and falls abound. Heat 6 saw a start pulled back and then in the re-run Andersson straightened up at the turn and was locked with Burmeister both riders sliding under the air fence, Andersson banging his right hand badly and was forced to sit out the rest of the meeting. Woffinden did what many visitors have failed to do since June, and that was head home Darcy Ward in heat 7 as struggling Wolves did their best to keep the Pirates within their sights but when Doyle and Hefenbrock claimed the Pirates’ second 5-1 of the night the meeting began to swing towards just one result, especially as they had to cover for Proctor’s remaining rides as he fell on lap three. Harris won his tactical ride but that only brought the deficit back to 7 points. A harsh disqualification for Doyle in heat 10 left Holder fighting a lone cause but he did so exquisitely with a brilliant cut-back at the first turn to win by a distance. Steadily Poole built on their advantage, Ward and Doyle moving it on to 9 points with a 4-2 in heat 11 and Watt and Hefenbrock banked a 5-1 in an awarded heat 12, before Holder and Ward left Harris as an also-ran in heat 13. Woffinden took the honours wearing the black and white in heat 14 and with Gafurov retiring the visitors banked their second heat advantage of the night but the cause had already been lost.

POOLE V ROBINS - PREVIEWSWINDON aim to continue their recent improvement with back-to-back meetings against Elite League favourites Poole this week. Jan Staechmann’s side go to Dorset on Wednesday with the return at the Abbey on Thursday – and there’s a trip to Lakeside on Friday for good measure! Poole have been forced into a team change for Wednesday as Chris Holder has been ruled out after feeling the effects of a crash in Monday’s narrow defeat at Wolverhampton. Robins boss Jan Staechmann said: “This week we have a busy period with three meetings, two of which are away, and two of which are against a powerhouse Poole side that are challenging for the league title. “I still maintain we have nothing to lose, and will go into action with that attitude. “We have had a couple of good meetings under our belts where we have been steadily improving, and I see no reason for that improvement to slow down, having had some tough opposition at home over the last few weeks already. “The guys in the team are working well together, and are keen to do well for the remainder of the season, obviously with a view to securing a team place for 2012.” POOLE: Rory Schlein, Dennis Andersson, Davey Watt, Renat Gafurov, Darcy Ward, Jason Doyle, Christian Hefenbrock. POOLE 53 ROBINS 41BATTLING Swindon went down to a 53-41 defeat at Elite League leaders Poole on Wednesday evening. Although the Pirates were never seriously troubled on the night, the Robins did give a decent account of themselves and will have been encouraged to see the return to form of Scott Nicholls. The Great Britain star top-scored with 14-points and Nicolai Klindt also chipped in with 8+1, but Poole were very solid all down the order and provided the vast majority of the race winners. The Dorset men were 15-9 ahead after four races, but a 4-2 from Nicholls and Jesper B Monberg in Heat 5 did reduce the deficit momentarily. But Poole restored their six-point lead in Heat 7 and a 5-1 in Heat 8 from Jason Doyle and Dennis Andersson gave them some further breathing space. Klindt did have some success with tactical ride in heat 9 running a double-point second place behind Davey Watt, with Sergey Darkin third - but another maximum for the Pirates in Heat 10 increased their advantage to twelve-points (37-25). Nicholls was the tactical ride choice in race 11 but he too had to settle for second place behind Watt. Doyle was third and so the race was shared as a 4-4. A couple of home 4-2s then followed, but Jan Staechman’s men did restore some respectability to the final scoreline when skipper Simon Stead and Cory Gathercole took maximum points from Heat 14. The two teams are straight back in action against each other tomorrow night for the return match at the Abbey Stadium (Thursday, 7.30pm). POOLE 53: Davey Watt 13, Darcy Ward 11+1, Dennis Andersson 9+2, Jason Doyle 9, Rory Schlein 8+1, Renat Gafurov 2+1, Christian Hefenbrock 1 SWINDON 41: Scott Nicholls 14, Nikolai Klindt 8+1, Cory Gathercole 6+1, Simon Stead 5, Maciej Janowski 4, Sergey Darkin 2+2, Jesper B Monberg 2 swindonweb

POOLE 48 BRUMMIES 42
BIRMINGHAM Brummies gave Elite League title favourites Poole a real fright before going down 48-42 in Wednesday’s Elite League clash in Dorset.
The Perry Barr outfit, who have been a valuable addition to the top flight of British Speedway this season, did themselves proud with a resilient display but came unstuck in the closing stages when it mattered most.
Polish World Cup winner Krzysztof Kasprzak was in fine form with 11-point from four completed rides and he was also excluded in one outing.
And Kasprzak, who has been a controversial member of the Birmingham side this season with his inconsistency, was the last heat hero as he pulled off a stunning pass on Holder with Ward third and Danny King at the back to gain a consolation point for Birmingham.
Boss Graham Drury said: “I’m very proud of this result. We might even have won but I thought we had some bad luck along the way and I have to give credit to the lads. Poole know they have been in a meeting.”
POOLE: Chris Holder 13, Darcy Ward 11+1, Jason Doyle 9+2, Davey Watt 7+1, Renat Gafurov 6+1, Dennia Andersson 2+1, Mateusz Szczpaniak 0.
BIRMINGHAM: Krzysztof Kasprzak 11, Ulrich Ostergaard 7+2, Danny King 7, Ben Barker 6+1, Daniel Nermark 6, Claus Vissing 4+3, Ales Dryml 1.

Pirates Four-fit Unbeaten Record
They were the first club to take a point off the Pirates at Wimborne Road when they last visited, now Belle Vue have become the one and only side to have defeated the Pirates at the Place of Pace in a regular Elite league fixture. The Aces return to Manchester having salvaged the league points through a last heat decider as the dynamic duo of Darcy Ward and Chris Holder couldn't quite pull it out of the bag for the Pirates. The combination had worked perfectly in heat 13 as they edged Poole ahead for the first time in this meeting that had plenty of incident interspersed with showers of rain that just conspired to make the night as difficult as possible. Fielding just four of their own riders the Pirates were given some anxious moments when guest Sam Masters was catapulted over his handlebars in the opening heat. Fortunately the young Aussie was able to walk gingerly back to the pits whilst the back straight fence underwent a rebuild. Bravely Masters was able to carry on racing for the rest of the night, although had to sit out the re-run of that opening heat and he looked sharp in his second ride too but had to concede the reserves win to Belle Vue's impressive Pole Lukasz Jankowski, who was to prove inspirational in saving the Aces from defeat. Whilst Poole were quickly back on level terms through skipper Davey Watt they suffered another massive blow a heat later when Darcy Ward infringed at the tapes. Handicapped by 15 metres he rapidly made up the distance and was lining up a last bend attack on Charlie Gjedde when he rode into the Dane's machine and fell heavily. It took a while but he eventually rose to his feet, dismissing the awaiting ambulance and returned to the pits under his own steam. Aces held the advantage and doubled it when Holder and Masters found themselves on the wrong end of a Gjedde/Kling 5-1 and suddenly the Pirates were beginning to look vulnerable. They weren't helped by the swirling rain that swept in and made heat 7 something of a lottery, Ward, bravely back on his machine but unable to see after just two laps. Belle Vue were relentless though and whilst the showers abated conditions were tricky and by the halfway stage the visitors held a 14 point advantage. Skipper Davey Watt was tasked with trying to help get the Pirates back into the meeting and he didnt disappoint when wearing the black and white. With Jason Doyle in tow the Pirates halved the difference and began to get some belief back. Neither Holder or Ward had anything to support them over the next two heats but Watt was well backed up by a splendid ride from Sam Masters that reduced the difference to just 3 points, at the stage when if conditions had worsened a result could have been declared. Brilliantly Holder and Ward outshone Rory Schlein, the Belle Vue number one playing his part in a thrilling heat 13 and with just two heats remaining the Pirates were now experiencing that 'leading feeling'. Masters worked exceptionally hard to hold off former British champion Chris Harris in heat 14 and put leader Jankowski under pressure but Jason Doyle was unable to find his way into the mix and so the pendulum swung back in the Aces favour, leading by just one point. It was down to Holder and Ward to try and save the day but Harris was clearly embarassed by his defeat at the hands of Masters and stormed from the tapes to set up an unassailable lead which Ward tirelessly tried to break down. Holder meanwhile was being detained by Schlein at the back and the Pirates were to suffer the 152nd all time home league defeat.
