Eagles prepare for big nightPreparations are well under way for the biggest match at Eastbourne Speedway in the last ten years. On Monday (October 3) the Lifestyle Eagles host the first leg of the Elite League Grand Final against Poole. Eastbourne go into the tie believing they can cause a huge upset and bring the league title to Sussex for the first time since 2000. Co-promoter and team manager Trevor Geer said: “It was a fantastic performance to get us through to the final. Every team member worked so hard and we deserve to be in the final. After all, we were either first or second in the league table for much of the season. “I really do believe we can go on now and win the championship. We beat Poole twice on aggregate this year in the league fixtures so we know we have a good chance.” Co-promoter Mike Bellerby said: “We had a fantastic night of speedway on Monday when we beat Lakeside in the semi-final. There was a great atmosphere all around the stadium and that certainly got through to our team in the pits. “But that, I am certain, will be nothing on this coming Monday. We are expecting a big crowd and I urge fans to get here as early as possible, especially if they wish to secure their usual place on the terraces. “We will do everything we can to get people into the stadium as quickly as possible. I appreciate that it is a Monday night and those with longer journeys after work will naturally be more pressed for time. Therefore, it will help us all if those who can arrive early, do so.” The match begins at 7.30pm with the turnstiles open from 5.30pm. We are pleased to say that there will only be a small increase in admission prices for the match. Admission prices will be Adults £18 and OAPs £16 with the normal prices for children including the Kids A Quid promotion. eastbourneeagles.co/

EASTBOURNE EAGLES v. POOLE PIRATES
PLAY OFF FINAL – 1st LEG : MONDAY 3rd OCTOBER 2011
life-eagle-logo1Sussex Speedway Squad, Eastbourne ‘Lifestyle’ Eagles face their Final Frontier at Arlington Stadium (7.30 p.m. tapes up) this Monday evening as they roll out the red carpet and play host to this seasons Elite League table toppers, the Poole Pirates in the first leg of the domestic sports showpiece event, the 2011 Play Off Final. Following the completion of their absorbing aggregate victory over local rivals the Lakeside Hammers of Monday last, the Eagles now stand on the brink of their first League title success in more than a decade, that of course being their memorable Championship victory against a Jason Crump / Leigh Adams inspired King’s Lynn Stars outfit in season 2000. Standing between them and the glittering prize however come the not inconsiderable presence of the Dorset side, the team who have largely swept all before them this term, the team who have seemingly become recent history’s serial Elite League title winners and the same team who are widely anticipated by the majority of the speedway going public to do so again this time around.
Not surprising in many ways considering the powerhouse collective that the Pirates possess, one that contains the latter day equivalent of the Crump / Adams connection, coming in the guise of awesome Australian duo Chris Holder and Darcy Ward. Add to that equation the presence of not only former Eastbourne Captain and well versed Arlington exponent Davey Watt and highly rated Swede Dennis Andersson but also the recently acquired pair of potential match winners in Thomas H. Jonasson, a man who only recently experienced the heady whirl of the Grand Prix circuit to impressive effect, as well as newly crowned German Champion Kevin Wolbert. Wolbert, who plies his trade for the Edinburgh Monarchs in the Premier League made his Poole debut at Arlington just a few short weeks ago and made an immediate impact with a double figure tally against the Sussex side, one that saw his new team safely, and for the Eagles agonisingly, through to the Knockout Cup Final following the two sides recent match up at the competition’s semi final stage. Monday, and not just this one coming, the action set to resume at the Pirates Wimborne Road for the second leg of this Play Off tie a further seven days hence, offers Eastbourne not only the opportunity to atone for that disappointment but also the chance to taste the League Winners champagne for the first time since the far off days of that Millennium campaign. If any team can know the feeling of getting the better of the Dorset outfit over two legs this term it is the modern day Eagles. Hitting the ground running, the 2011 Sussex side triumphed in the early season Challenge between the two sides, the Eagles winning through by a 57-33 margin in season opening Arlington fixture before proceeding to a 96-87 aggregate success following a 54-39 reverse at Wimborne Road. More significant to anyone watching however would undoubtedly have been the brace of two-legged wins the Eagles registered against the Pirates when the season’s serious business kicked in and the Elite League fixtures came to bear. The first home and away contests witnessing a 57-39 win from the rubber in Sussex, while a 55-39 defeat at Wimborne Road saw the Eagles gain a slender 96-94 cumulative victory. Indeed, even better was to follow, a 54-40 reverse in Dorset in mid June being countered by a 57-35 victory at Arlington a month later, Eastbourne claiming, almost unbelievably, a third aggregate success against their eminent opponents from down the South Coast, this time by a 97-89 margin. Impressive stuff indeed, and it could even have been better with the Eagles having been widely predicted to repeat the feat for what would have proved a fourth time after they lost by a slender 46-44 scoreline against an injury ravaged Pirates outfit as the two sides squared up to each other in that Knockout Cup Semi-Final. Unfortunately for them, on that occasion it was not destined to be with Poole defying all the odds, courtesy of virtuoso performances from Messrs. Holder and Ward, profitable guest outings by Ben Barker and Jesper B. Monberg together with that stunning debut from Wolbert, one that collectively crafted a wholly impressive 51-39 second leg victory that eased their passage through to the Final against either Lakeside or Belle, this moment proving unequivocally Eastbourne’s one genuinely disappointing moment of our 2011 season to date. Once again, the Eagles will track an unchanged side, and it stands testament to the Sussex Managements team building acumen that they should have reached this stage of the campaign with virtually the same team that began the season. Dawid Lampart proved an early casualty after his Polish team withdrew permission to allow his continued presence in the Eagles side, this enforced change giving rise to the arrival of Timo Lahti, the young Finn who more recently has repaid the faith shown in him by the Sussex hierarchy with a string of impressive showings. The one regret that the Arlington patrons would inevitably have is the absence of Mr. Popular, Lukas Dryml whose mid term injury sustained at Birmingham cut short his season in such unjust fashion. Dryml, out of anyone would have deserved to share in such a high profile event following his efforts and performances that arguably played a large part in them getting to where they stand today, in the Play Off Final. So the scene is set. The Eagles know only too well that they have the capability to beat the Pirates over two legs, after all they have done just that three times already this year. Equally the Dorset side will feel confident they have banished a certain Arlington hoodoo following their recent Knockout Cup success. The contest seems delicately poised and could well go down to the wire. With a biggest crowd of the season expected to pack the Sussex terraces, the one word of advice from the Eastbourne management to all fans would be, to get there early.
