Swedish star Andreas Jonsson made up for narrowly missing out on a Scandinavian SGP gold medal in Malilla by leading his rampant Zielona Gora side into the Polish Ekstraliga play-off semi-finals on Sunday.
AJ was still licking his wounds after being passed by Jaroslaw Hampel on the line at the G&B Arena on Saturday night.
But he was in no mood to feel sorry for himself as he blitzed to 11 paid 14 points from five rides to lead Falubaz to a 60-30 victory at home to Rzeszow. This, coupled with their 59-31 triumph in the first leg last Sunday, was more than enough to send them through to the final four.
Jonsson had no shortage of support as fellow countryman Jonas Davidsson produced a blinding display to add 12 paid 13, while Piotr Protasiewicz racked up four race wins to complete a 12-point maximum.
World Championship leader Greg Hancock scored a solid eight paid 10 and reserve Patryk Dudek shone on nine paid 10.
Jason Crump bagged 11 points from six outings and provided the visitors’ biggest threat. Rafal Okoniewski – the only Rzeszow man to beat Jonsson – weighed in with a useful 10 paid 11.
But British rider Chris Harris was unable to follow up his promising performance in Malilla and managed just six from five rides.
Elsewhere, Torun put one foot in the semi-finals after skipper Ryan Sullivan scored a 14 paid 15-point maximum to inspire his side to a 58-32 first leg win at Wroclaw.
Grand Prix star Chris Holder recorded 10 paid 13 and was only denied a full house when Maciej Janowski beat him to second spot in race 14.
Rune Holta collected three heat wins on his way to 10 paid 11, while Adrian Miedzinski racked up 11.
Janowski was Wroclaw’s top scorer on 10, while Scandinavian SGP bronze medallist Kenneth Bjerre contributed eight.
In the day’s other play-off quarter final, world champion Tomasz Gollob bounced back from his Malilla nightmare to bag 12 paid 13 points and put Gorzow firmly on course for the semis.
Leszno’s Scandinavian SGP winner Jaroslaw Hampel defeated his compatriot twice on the way to an incredible 17 paid 18. But his blistering form was not enough to save the Bulls from a 51-39 loss at the Alfred Smoczyk Stadium.
Slovenian star Matej Zagar was on fire for the visitors, matching Gollob’s 12 paid 13, while Danish champion Nicki Pedersen accrued 11 paid 12.
Australian international Troy Batchelor was the only man to offer Hampel any serious support as he scored 12 paid 13. SGP racer Janusz Kolodziej bagged just five paid six.
British rider Edward Kennett made his first racing appearance since being caught using an illegal silencer at Lakeside on August 6.
He managed just one point from three races and this could be his last meeting for some time if he is suspended by the Speedway Control Bureau on Tuesday.
A ban would render him unavailable for the quarter final, second leg, which takes place at Gorzow next Sunday. The return meeting between Torun and Wroclaw will be staged on the same day.
There was better news for another Brit in the First Division as Tai Woffinden rattled off a fantastic 14 paid 15-point maximum for Gniezno in their 51-39 win at home to league leaders Bydgoszcz.
SGP star Emil Sayfutdinov struggled for the visitors after two heavy crashes in Malilla on Saturday night and managed just three points from two outings.
