Peterborough United manager Darren Ferguson was relieved that his side still have their destiny in their own hands despite a dismal showing at Pride Park.
Posh went down 3-1 to Derby County to suffer a first Championship defeat in 11 matches, but relegation rivals Wolves and Barnsley both failed to win so Ferguson’s men remain just above the bottom three on goal difference. “That’s the only positive from today that I can see,” Ferguson said. “It’s still in our own hands with two games to go and if that had scenario had been offered to me after the start to the season we had I’d have accepted it gladly. “We may have to win both matches, but we are capable of doing just that. “Sometimes as a manager you have to accept that you were beaten by a better team and Derby were outstanding today. We never got started for whatever reason and we were outplayed completely so we can have no complaints about the result.
“It was a poor end to a very good run in which my players have been outstanding. I can’t be too critical of them, but it’s a fact that if we play like this again in our last two games we will go down. “It’s also a fact that if we play in the last two games like we have in the previous 10 games we will be safe. I am sure my players realise this - if they don’t they are not as intelligent as I think they are.
