Peterborough United chairman Darragh MacAnthony has confirmed today (May 8) that Darren Ferguson will remain as the club’s manager in League One next season.
Ferguson cast doubt on his own future during a post-match press conference following relegation from the Championship in agonising fashion at Crystal Palace last Saturday. Posh went down after conceding two goals in the final seven minutes of the last game of the campaign. Ferguson expressed disappointment that he would not be able to take the players to where he believes they belonged. But MacAnthony and Ferguson will now work to deliver their third promotion from League One together. MacAnthony said: “Darren Ferguson will not be going to any other club and is already planning, with me, our title push next season. “Both he and Kevin Russell (Ferguson’s assistant) are travelling to the States next week to spend a few days with me planning everything. “I’m already excited about the new season and those seven minutes last Saturday won’t define this team as they will be stronger and hungrier for success.” Ferguson had been backed heavily this week to take over as Wolves manager following the departure of Dean Saunders. But he will back at London Road tomorrow (Friday) to complete the retained players’ list for next season. MacAnthony does not believe there will be major changes, despite recent speculation linking star striker Dwight Gayle to a move into the Premier League. The chairman has already slapped a £10 million price tag on his most prized asset. MacAnthony added: “Me and the Gaffer don’t see massive changes this summer, but there will be movement both ways as usual. "Dwight is worth £10 million plus add-ons! “He’s one of the best four strikers outside the Premier League and therefore priceless.” Ferguson has been unavailable for comment this week. It’s understood he has spent time away with his family to get over the disappointment of relegation. Ferguson admitted he was devastated by last Saturday’s events stating: “We will all be suffering for a while after the way the last game panned out. It was devastating.”
