PRESENTER Natalie Quirk admits she’s delighted that audiences almost doubled for speedway in 2018 on BT Sport.
It was revealed this week that 41 per cent more viewers tuned in to watch the sport on the top sports channel.
There’s no doubt that the action has been outstanding for BT Sport including two classic races featuring Max Fricke at Belle Vue and Chris Harris at Poole. Plus, of course, British hero Tai Woffinden being crowned World Champion for a record-breaking third-time live on BT.
Natalie is encouraged by the reaction by fans. She said: “We are obviously delighted that audience figures have gone up by such a huge amount.
“It has been a terrific season for many reasons. Tai becoming World Champion was brilliant to see unfold as the year progressed.
“The Premiership was a fascinating season with Poole coming from bottom of the league to win the title.
“But for me the race with Max Fricke coming from last to first at the National Speedway Stadium will live long in the memory as will Chris Harris securing Poole’s place in the Grand Final on the line against Jason Doyle.
“It proves that speedway, on its day, is the most exciting motorsport in the world. We had drama, theatre and great action, we can’t ask for more than that.
“It will be great to be back in 2019. There is a huge amount of passion for the sport from all the team Nigel Pearson, Kelvin Tatum, Scott Nicholls, Steve Brandon and myself.
“Not only that but there’s a big team of people behind the scenes at BT who put a lot of hard work into making the coverage as good as it can be, and to try and keep improving it.
“I know I speak for all the team to say a big thank you to all the fans for watching.”
Natalie was also happy to see Speedway Great Britain’s social media figures booming with 5,000 new followers and likes on Twitter and Facebook.
Fricke’s epic race at Belle Vue has reached 1.8million on Facebook alone. She added: “It’s great to see that sport is gaining more audience across the board.
“I think it’s important to focus on the positives, the sport is hopefully now reaching out to a younger audience on social media and BT Sport.”
