Grand Prix star Kenneth Bjerre admits King’s Lynn was the only club for him once Peterborough lost their place in the British Elite League.
The 26-year-old thought his UK plans were done and dusted when he signed up for a fifth straight season at the East of England Showground in early November.
But his return fell apart when the Panthers fell out with the BSPA over a series of controversial rule changes during the governing body’s annual meeting just two weeks later.
While a number of Peterborough stars are still sweating on their futures, Bjerre was quickly snapped up by Elite League newcomers King’s Lynn.
The Esbjerg-born man lives in Huntingdon – a short drive from Panthers’ home track – and he was considering racing a full season with Swedish club Lejonen, rather than commuting long distances across the UK for another top flight team’s home meetings.
However, with King’s Lynn just 46 miles away from Bjerre’s British base, he admits the Stars’ offer was too good to refuse.
He said: “That was the only place I wanted to go if I didn’t go to Peterborough. Otherwise there would have been too much travelling and then I would have been riding full-time in Sweden.
“For me, it didn’t really matter whether I got a club or not. I would have just done the Elitserien instead.
"But I had a few practises at King’s Lynn last season when I was testing out some engines and it’s a nice place.”
Like the vast majority of riders and fans, Bjerre admits Peterborough’s dramatic Elite League exit came as a huge shock.
He added: “I had a signed contract with them and everything was sorted. I was looking forward to the season. But it all went wrong.
“It was quite a big shock because nobody told anybody about what was going on.
"It’s a bit of a mess, but I will always support Peterborough because I am their asset as well. I had to move on, though.”

Danish star Kenneth Bjerre is desperate to end his wait for a PARKEN Stadium final appearance in the FIM Dansk Metal Danish SGP in Copenhagen on Saturday night. Bjerre has raced in his national stadium six times and has only failed to reach the semi-finals once. But the Danish champion has never progressed into the last four. He is currently ninth in the World Championship with 21 points and knows ending his Copenhagen hoodoo would be the perfect way to fire himself up the standings. Speaking in an exclusive interview on Speedwaygp.com the Esbjerg-born racer said: “I’ve been in the semi-final almost every time I’ve been there, but I’ve never done the final. “That’s something I’d really like to do and I’d love to try and win it. It’s really important to win every Grand Prix and score as many points as possible every time. I haven’t scored as many as I’ve wanted this year, so hopefully it will turn around soon and it would be nice if it happens in the Danish one.” Bjerre bagged 12 points for King’s Lynn on Wednesday night as they picked up a hard-fought 48-42 win at home to Belle Vue. There is no doubt the Huntingdon-based man would have rather spent the season at parent club Peterborough. But despite being forced into the move when the Panthers looked set to lose their Elite League spot, Bjerre couldn’t be happier with life at the Norfolk Arena. He said: “It’s so perfect. The people there are so nice. I couldn’t stay at Peterborough, so I went to the second best place. It’s really nice there and I really enjoy it. I feel happy.” The Stars are currently third in the Elite League standings and are nicely poised for a place in the end-of-season play-offs. “There is still a long way to go,” Bjerre admits. “But we seem to be picking up points every time. That’s what it’s all about. “We are just enjoying it and there is no pressure from the club. We just do our best and hopefully it will pay off.” sgp

Speedway: Bjerre can be a Great Dane Jeez, how original! KENNETH Bjerre is bidding to go the extra yard tonight. The former Panthers ace from Huntingdon would love to sample glory in his home World Championship event, the Danish GP. Bjerre is no stranger to making the semi-finals at Parken Stadium in Copenhagen but this year he would love to go one better and reach the finale. Bjerre, who remains a Panthers asset and now rides for King’s Lynn in the Elite League, said: “This is the biggest meeting in Denmark all year. “It’s in the biggest stadium and it’s a special experience for a speedway rider and also for the fans. “I’ve been in the semi-final almost every time I’ve been there, but I’ve never done the final. That’s something I’d really like to do and I’d love to try and win it. It’s really important to win every Grand Prix and score as many points as possible every time. “I haven’t scored as many as I’ve wanted this year, so hopefully it will turn around soon and it would be nice if it happens in the Danish one.” Bjerre has made two semi-finals so far this season but is yet to advance to a final. He has one GP success to his name - that arrived in Sweden in 2010. boroet

Danish champion Kenneth Bjerre hopes a week off will leave him firing on all cylinders going into the FIM Nice Italian SGP on Saturday. Getting even a few days off at this time of year is usually harder than nailing jelly to a wall for riders competing in Europe’s top leagues. But Bjerre, who races for King’s Lynn at home to Eastbourne tonight, has not been in action since Stars’ clash with Peterborough at the Norfolk Arena last Wednesday. The Huntingdon-based man suffered a major dip in the second half of 2010 and slipped down to seventh place in the final standings, despite starting the year in championship-winning form. Bjerre is ninth in this season’s table with 38 points and six rounds remaining, and is yet to produce his brilliant best in the World Championship. But he hopes his brief rest will make all the difference at Terenzano this weekend. He said: “I’ve been off on holiday and it has given me the chance to reset my mind for the Grand Prix. “The last few years I’ve been really good early on and I have struggled after the break. Hopefully this year I can come back stronger. “There are six rounds to go and I’ve got the speed back into the bikes. I can make starts again now too, so I’m looking forward to Terenzano.” Bjerre bagged five points at the Motoclub Olimpia in 2009 and fared even worse last year, when he scored just four. But the Wroclaw and Lejonen star is not a man who dwells on the past. He said: “I won at Gothenburg last year and this season I only got two. It doesn’t matter what I have done there before. I have to go there with my new head on and do the work. I’ll just go there, have a good practice and make some starts. “We’re all World Championship riders and we can all race, so it’s tough. I just have to be the best.”

Bjerre has mechanicals The Panthers skipper had four points from his first two rides but couldn’t add to his Auckland tally after later suffering mechanical problems. The Dane packed up at the start of Heat 9, which was followed by a puncture in Heat 13 and then ran a last place in his final outing. But it had all began so brightly when he made a good start to lead in the opening race of the series, and although he had to eventually settle for second behind the impressive Tomasz Gollob, the signs still looked good. Jason Crump won Heat 5 with Bjerre winning the battle for second place ahead of Freddie Lindgren and Andreas Jonsson, but the Panthers skipper then ran into problems at the tapes in his third ride and his hopes of a semi-final place began to evaporate. The meeting was eventually won by the 2011 Champion Greg Hancock, with the American producing a stunning performance beating Jarek Hampel,Nicki Pedersen and Crump in the Grand Final. The series now moves onto Leszno, Poland on Saturday April 28. Bjerre in the meantime makes the long journey back to England in time for Good Friday’s Elite League opener against King’s Lynn. Is it me or was the NZ GP thing just a complete waste of time and a waste of a hell of a lot of money? Another example of BSI (or whoever runs the GP's these days) trying to and failing badly to emulate the real GP circus.

Is it me or was the NZ GP thing just a complete waste of time and a waste of a hell of a lot of money? Another example of BSI (or whoever runs the GP's these days) trying to and failing badly to emulate the real GP circus. Well Mr Positive loved it (who Plummer's sucking up to atm for some reason )
Nigel Pearson @nigelpearson Congrats to all involved in making the #NZSGP such a success. What did you all think of it? #speedway
Apart from speedway to watch live on a Saturday evening in the summer the SGP does nothing for me. It'll never get near WSB, Moto GP etc so I'm not sure what their expansion objective is
Looks like Plummer's sucking up to Pearson because: Nigel Pearson @nigelpearson : @markplummer81 mate has my interview been in paper yet? PDF? #ego Mark Plummer @markplummer81 : @nigelpearson be in Thursday mate #patience #PDFwillbesent (In reply to Nigel Pearson)
