Swedish hotshot Thomas H Jonasson has been handed the wild card for the FIM Swedish Speedway Grand Prix at Gothenburg’s Ullevi Stadium on Saturday, May 14.The 22-year-old donned the famous No.16 race jacket in the FIM Scandinavian SGP in Malilla last season and bagged a very respectable eight points. This tally would normally be enough to get a rider into the semi-finals, but THJ missed the cut by one in a hotly-contested meeting. Jonasson qualified as second series reserve for this year’s World Championship after finishing sixth in the GP Challenge at Danish track Vojens last August. As a result, he could appear on the SGP circuit again this year if two riders are forced to miss a round through injury, illness or other reasons, or if first reserve Magnus Zetterstrom is unavailable to cover an absence. The former Swindon man also played a key role in helping Swedish Elitserien side Vetlanda land the title last year. He races alongside SGP regulars Jason Crump, Jaroslaw Hampel and Janusz Kolodziej at the club. Jonasson also rides for Gdansk in the Polish First Division. THJ is joined in Gothenburg by track reserves Simon Gustafsson and Dennis Andersson. Gustafsson, who wears the No.17 race jacket, rides for Eastbourne in the British Elite League and Indianerna in Sweden. Meanwhile, No.18 Andersson is in his debut season for Poole in the Elite League. His sensational performances at reserve have played a huge part in many bookmakers tipping the Pirates for the championship. He also races for Wroclaw in the Polish Ekstraliga and Lejonen in the Elitserien. The referee for round two of the world championship FIM Speedway Grand Prix series will be Wojciech Grodzki from Poland. sgp

Tomasz Gollob’s manager Thomas Gaszynski says there no hard feelings between the world champion and his arch-rival Nicki Pedersen following their titanic scrap in Leszno. The Gorzow team mates lead the World Championship going into the FIM Meridian Lifts Swedish SGP in Gothenburg on Saturday, with Gollob on 18 points and Pedersen on 17. They met three times at the FIM Fogo European Grand Prix on April 30, which saw Gollob excluded from their heat race after appearing to drop his machine in a bid to get a re-run. The Pole bounced back to win a hard-fought semi-final between the two, but Pedersen barged him aside to top the rostrum in the final. Despite such a fierce battle between them, both men were able to smile about it and discussed the action like old friends in the post-meeting press conference. And Gaszynski says this proves why both have won speedway’s biggest prize. He said: “It just shows how professional both Nicki and Tomek are. They have been around the block a few times and they know what it’s all about. I guess that’s the difference between someone who has been world champion and someone who hasn’t. “Of course it was Nicki and Tomek battling on that night, but it really could be anybody next time. We’ll be up against 15 of the world’s best in Gothenburg, and also the wild card.” Gaszynski was delighted to see Gollob leave the opening round with 18 points after he bagged six at Leszno in 2010. Despite the four-time Speedway World Cup winner making a far better start than when he clinched his first world title last year, Gaszynski isn’t reading too much into the result. He said: “Obviously we’ve very happy because it was a much better night compared to last time in Leszno, where we scored six. We are happy with second place and 18 points, which puts us in the lead. “Of course it could have been a few more, but we were happy with what we could get. “If you’re ahead at the beginning and everything goes alright, you’re okay. But Tomasz had a bad beginning in 2010 and finished on top.“If you look at Crumpie, he won the first round and finished third. Third is a very good place to be, but it’s not the world title. So we can’t take anything for granted now.” Gollob finished second to Kenneth Bjerre in Gothenburg’s Ullevi Stadium last year. As one of the series’ temporary circuits, it is always one of the toughest venues to find the perfect setup. So Gaszynski admits Team Tomek would be delighted with a repeat performance. He said: “On these one-off tracks it can be anyone’s day or anyone’s nightmare. He was second last year and scored 16 points. If we had a second again, we’d take it. “It’s a very tricky track. It has long straights, narrow corners and it is a very quick track. Conditions change from race to race. It’s a matter of getting it dialled in and keeping the set-up right for the changing conditions throughout the night.” sgp

Australian champion Chris Holder was delighted to bounce back from being crushed on countback in Leszno by winning a rain-soaked FIM Meridian Lifts Swedish SGP in Gothenburg on Saturday night.
The meeting was abandoned after 16 races as the heavy rain which had lashed the Ullevi Stadium all evening rendered track conditions and visibility too poor to continue.
Holder was top of the scorechart with 10 points when the meeting was stopped and was level with Greg Hancock. Like the American, the Sydneysider had two heat wins and two seconds to his name.
But the Poole, Torun and Lejonen hero came out on top as he pipped the Californian to the chequered flag in a fiercely-contested heat 11.
He was also helped by the fact Swedish star Antonio Lindback, who finished third, tumbled on the last lap of heat 16 while holding third place. This would have been enough to put him atop the podium, as the Rio Rocket had won his opening three races.
Holder was more than happy to take the gold medal in these fortunate circumstances, particularly after scoring nine points at the FIM Fogo European Grand Prix in Leszno on April 30 and missing the semi-finals on countback. "Last time in Leszno I got done on countback. That was a bit of bad luck, but this time I won because Antonio couldn’t see." - Chris Holder
He said: “You’ve got to have luck. You can’t just win without any. Fortunately it worked out well for me this time. Last time in Leszno I got done on countback. That was a bit of bad luck, but this time I won because Antonio couldn’t see.
“I’m stoked. The conditions were terrible and I had just had a great run. It worked out and I came out on top.
“I had all the gates and I just made some good decisions with the bike. I had a lot of speed, but I used my head.”
Holder was full of praise for FIM director of speedway Ole Olsen and his team for constructing a temporary track which was able to withstand 16 races despite such a heavy downpour.
He said: “The track was awesome. You’ve got to give credit to the boys who did the work. To get this many races on it with those conditions is unheard of, so you’ve got to give credit to the track people.”
Along with the bad weather, the meeting was marred by an horrific crash for three-time world champion Jason Crump in heat 10, when he spun off on turn three and landed hard on his right shoulder.
This is not the one he injured badly at Belle Vue in September 2009, which dogged his 2010 World Championship challenge.
Holder was one of the first to check on his fellow countryman, who was taken to hospital by ambulance. “He wasn’t really saying too much,” the Poole-based man said. “He was in a lot of pain. Fingers crossed it’s not too bad.”
Holder’s triumph puts him fifth in the World Championship on 19 points. But defending champion Tomasz Gollob, who led the standings going into Gothenburg, remains at the summit after scoring six. He is tied on 24 points with Hancock, but the Pole takes seniority after finishing higher in the 2010 series.
Russian hotshot Emil Sayfutdinov scored eight and stands third on 22. And despite bagging just four points, European SGP winner Nicki Pedersen is still handily-placed in fourth with 21.
British No.1 Chris Harris also finished on four, claiming a second, two thirds and a last place. He is 11th in the overall standings with 11.
FIM MERIDIAN LIFTS SWEDISH SGP RESULT: 1 Chris Holder 10, 2 Greg Hancock 10, 3 Antonio Lindback 9, 4 Janusz Kolodziej 8, 5 Emil Sayfutdinov 8, 6 Thomas H Jonasson 8, 7 Jason Crump 6, 8 Andreas Jonsson 6, 9 Tomasz Gollob 6, 10 Freddie Lindgren 6, 11 Jaroslaw Hampel 5, 12 Nicki Pedersen 4, 13 Chris Harris 4, 14 Kenneth Bjerre 2, 15 Rune Holta 1, 16 Artem Laguta 1, 17 Simon Gustafsson 1, 18 Dennis Andersson 0.
