After watching part of the Sky preview programme (why was it called that because it was all in the past ) before I put my foot through the TV, I decided I'll be fast forwarding through most Sky programmes in 2011 to miss as much of the presentation as possible. BRUMMIES V POOLE - MONDAY, PREVIEW
HISTORY is in the making at Birmingham’s Perry Barr Stadium with the Elite League speedway meeting since 1983 when the Brummies face Poole Pirates on Monday (7.30).
A bumper crowd is expected to enjoy what promises to be a tight contest alongside a massive TV audience with Sky Sports picking the fixture to launch their coverage of the new season.
It’s a meeting which has been described as ‘David v Goliath’ by Brummies boss Graham Drury as Poole are already strongly fancied to win the title in October.
The Pirates include new Swedish sensation Dennis Andersson who has already scored well in his appearances so far and in Kyle Newman also at reserve they have a former Birmingham favourite who did well for the club last season.
Australian duo Chris Holder and Davey Watt will also form a powerful spearhead for the Pirates with Russian Renat Gafurov back in British racing.
Said Drury: “It’s a massive meeting for Birmingham Speedway and we are very proud to be selected by Sky Sports to launch their coverage of the new season.
“We were much better on Thursday when we beat King’s Lynn and we will need to carry that form forward into this meeting.”
Australian youngster Dakota North has been booked to replace the unavailable Theo Pijper at reserve.
BIRMINGHAM: Krzysztof Kasprzak, Ales Dryml, Ben Barker, Daniel King, Daniel Nermark, Dakota North, Kevin Wolbert.
POOLE: Chris Holder, Renat Gafurov, Jason Doyle, Darcy Ward R/R, Davey Watt, Dennis Andersson, Kyle Newman.

Tempted not to increase Sky's viewing figures at all for this one FIXTURE CHANGE FOR MONDAYWOLVERHAMPTON’S Monday night clash with title favourites Poole has been made an Elite League clash. The meeting was originally due to be the first leg of the Elite Shield, but to accommodate the Sky Sports cameras the teams will now do battle for league points. Sky were originally due at Belle Vue’s league meeting with Swindon but the switch has been made due to continued uncertainty over the availability of Polish riders in the Robins team. It means the first leg of the Elite Shield will now be at Poole on Wednesday, April 6. wolvesweb
Poole Castle Cover Pirates’ scheduled trip to Monmore Green, Wolverhampton, in the Elite Shield has now been switched to a Sky Sports Elite League fixture to accommodate the broadcasting company who will be covering the fixture live. It means for the second successive Monday night the Pirates will feature on television, following their opening league victory at Birmingham. Poole chief Matt Ford admits that “it is not ideal for us as personally I would have preferred it to have remained the first leg of the Shield which would have allowed us to complete that competition in the space of three days. Instead, we will now be staging the first leg of the Shield, which is supposed to be an early season competition, and we will have to wait for the second and concluding leg.” “Also, from a team point of view I would have liked to have been going to Wolverhampton in the league with a full strength side but we still have Darcy (Ward) sidelined. But no doubt the lads will give it their best shot although it will be a different prospect altogether than last Monday when we went to Birmingham and won. Freddie Lindgren is on top form and just loves the Monmore circuit whilst Peter Karlsson is riding splendidly as he showed at Lakeside last night with that perfect 18 score.” “On the flip side though we don’t have to think too far back to the last time we rode at Wolverhampton and fought out that thrilling 44.5 all draw. If we can have more of the same on Monday then I for one will be happy” Monday teams (from) Wolverhampton: Freddie Lindgren, Peter Karlsson. Tai Woffinden, Troy Proctor, Ludvig Lindgren, Tyson Burmeister, Ricky Wells Poole: Chris Holder, Davey Watt, Jason Doyle, Renat Gafurov, Christian Hefenbrock, Dennis Andersson with rider replacement operating for Darcy Ward pooleweb

Sky Sports are in town this coming Monday evening (11th April) at 7:30pm as they broadcast the King’s Lynn ‘Roger Warnes Transport’ Stars Elite League match against the Lakeside Hammers live on TV.
To gain the biggest crowd possible the club have put together a special promotion and are offering fans that attend the match a free ticket for the Young Stars match which takes place on Wednesday night (13th April). Stars promoter, Jonathan Chapman, is looking forward to showcasing their club to the world ‘this is a big occasion for us and the town, we want to show the world how great our club is and need fans to come along and support us rather than sitting at home at watching us on TV. The Lakeside Hammers have once again built their team around the powerful spearhead of Lee Richardson and Adam Shields, both good performers at King’s Lynn in the past. Completing the top five is Swede Peter Ljung, a former World Cup champion and highly rated in his home country. At reserve Lakeside have former Rye House rider, Robert Mear and Canadian hot shot Kyle Legault.
For King’s Lynn their team remains unchanged after three home wins so far this season, including a fantastic win over Swindon on Wednesday which included a bumper haul of ten points plus a bonus from reserve Lasse Bjerre.

WOLVES V EASTBOURNE - MONDAY, PREVIEWWOLVERHAMPTON face another tough Elite League test when early pacesetters Eastbourne visit Monmore in a mouthwatering clash on Monday (7.30). The Sussex side ended Poole’s unbeaten record on Saturday night and arrive at Monmore on the back of five straight wins to open up the new campaign. Parrys International Wolves have already been beaten by the Eagles this season and are on a revenge mission. Skipper Peter Karlsson said: “Eastbourne are a lot more powerful than they were last season and this will be a real test for us. “They look solid all the way through for with Lewis Bridger at reserve they have some power at the lower end of their team. “But we have to focus on our own performance and if everyone gets going we will be fine, but it’s going to be a very hard meeting.” WOLVERHAMPTON: Freddie Lindgren, Ty Proctor, Ludvig Lindgren, Tai Woffinden, Peter Karlsson, Tyson Burmeister, Ricky Wells. EASTBOURNE: Bjarne Pedersen, Lukas Dryml, Simon Gustafsson, Cameron Woodward, Joonas Kylmakorpi, Lewis Bridger, Taylor Poole. wolvesweb

SWINDON will be hoping to bring down another of the Elite League’s big boys tonight as the Sky Sports cameras pay their first visit to Blunsdon in 2011.The Robins chalked up their first home victory of the year on Thursday with an impressive 49-43 defeat of hotly-tipped Poole but now they must take on the side that sit top of the pile, which is Eastbourne. Trevor Geer’s side may admittedly have completed more meetings than any other team which to some degree explains their lofty position, but they have recorded generally positive results thus far, winning five out of five at home and taking points at three out of five of their away meetings. A much-changed Swindon side failed to complete their fixture at Eastbourne on Friday after a heavy downpour caused the meeting to be abandoned at 24-12 after six heats. In that same meeting Justin Sedgmen suffered a heavy crash in race seven, which was ultimately never completed. The young Australian was lucky to escape serious injury after careering into the air fence following contact with guest teammate Darcy Ward, with a significant hole punched through the back of his helmet. Neverthelesss, the reserve is fully fit and is expected to take his place in the septet tonight, unlike Simon Stead who had hoped to make his comeback at the Abbey Stadium this evening. The Robins captain has not raced for Swindon since April 14 due to rib injuries and had desperately wanted to be fit enough to race tonight, but now a return against Wolverhampton next week looks the most likely option. Robins co-owner Gary Patchett revealed Stead, who has missed the last four completed meetings, should not have to be on the sidelines much longer . He said: “We were hoping to have Simon Stead back but we would rather him return when he is fully fit and it's not too far away right now. “It was a great win against Poole but in the end we were disappointed that we couldn't take all three points. We allowed them a consolation. “Now the boys will be going for all three against a powerful Eastbourne side." On the visitors’ side, talented Peterborough youngster Dakota North guests at reserve in place of the unavailable Timo Lahti, while Cameron Woodward has drops into the bottom two with Lewis Bridger moving into the main body of the team. Tonight’s action starts at the later-than-usual time of 8pm. swindonadver

Poole: Chris Holder (8.55), Darcy Ward (7.04), Davey Watt -capt (6.99), Jason Doyle (5.33), Renat Gafurov (4.52), Dennis Andersson (4.00), Christian Hefenbrock (3.23) Team Manager Neil Middleditch Coventry: Scott NIcholls -guest (8.48), Edward Kennett (7.17), Przemyslaw Pawlicki (6.67),Ryan Fisher (5.81), Kenni Larsen (5.80), Richard Sweetman (5.12),Josh Auty (3.00) Team Manager Alun Rossiter. For the first time since their smash and grab raid back in October 2010, Coventry visit the Place of Pace, Wimborne Road on Monday night. On that occasion, 217 days ago, a 50-40 victory for the Midland side that had finished their league fixtures some 26 points shy of table- topping Poole, not only denied the Castle Cover Pirates the league title but also ended a unbeaten home run for Poole that had stretched to 18 meetings. So there are many reasons why Poole will be looking to maintain their solid start to the 2011 campaign and Team manager Neil Middleditch admits "we will go into the match against Coventry as prepared as we always are. When we met last time some of the lads were a bit jaded as it came at the end of a very long season and although they tried to dip into their resource tanks to try and turn things around there was nothing left to give. But right now we have the likes of Chris and Darcy on fire and I don't think I've ever seen the two of them ride better. We saw a much improved performance from Davey Watt last Wednesday who has been working exceptionally hard to ride himself through a few early season niggles and Renat, Dennis, Jason and Christian have all been solid especially at home for us, so we just have to go out there and continue from where we left off. From that last meeting Poole have their four Aussie members - Holder, Ward, Watt and Doyle - as survivors this time around whilst only two of the Bees who were actually on duty return - big scoring reserve on that occasion Przemyslaw Pawlicki - now in the team proper and Richard Sweetman. Ahead of this visit, Coventry have been hampered by the freak injury loss of number one Hans Andersen who broke his leg in a running accident and they have drafted in former Pirate Scott Nicholls as a more than adequate replacement, whilst many eyes will be cast over the highly rated Kenni Larsen who has stepped up to Elite league racing from Premier league club Newcastle.. pooleweb

LAKESIDE V WOLVES - PREVIEW[/u] WOLVERHAMPTON go in search of more vital Elite League points when they travel to Lakeside for Monday’s Elite League action (7.30). The Parrys International Wolves pulled off a hard fought point at Swindon last Thursday and will be looking to add to their tally at the tricky Arena-Essex track. British youngster Joe Haines, who is the club’s number eight rider this season, has been drafted in as cover for the unavailable Tyson Burmeister and Tai Woffinden remains on the sidelines with a broken shoulder. Said Haines: “It’s a good opportunity for me, I’m really pleased to get the chance and hopefully I can score a few points to help my team.” Fans should note there is no meeting at Monmore Green on Monday due to the team travelling to Essex for a meeting which will be screened live by Sky Sports HD. LAKESIDE: Lee Richardson, Kauko Nieminen, Adam Shields, Piotr Swiderski, Peter Ljung, Robert Mear, Stuart Robson. I think heat 11 got me when NP & KT needed oxygen and I was being informed loadly what a race we'd got on here? Must have dropped off for 60 seconds because I missed it.

It would be nice if either of the two of them knew the rules, we had all that crap about reserves coming in for Richardson when most of the viewers knew full well they couldnt.
18.7.4 Only “qualified” Riders may be nominated, these must be: * a top 3 points scorer (exclude any rider who has already taken 7 rides)
NB. 4 x Programmed Rides only, including Bonus Points to count. * a Rider in the top 3 of that Meeting’s Team (by current CMA)
NB. No Reserve replacements are permitted and in the event of a Rider being disqualified for an offence covered by SR 18.9.2 only the Handicap option may be used. Should a non-disqualified Rider be unable to take part in a re-run (FN) then the place may only be taken by another “qualified” Rider.

Sky TV cameras focus on Eastbourne v PeterboroughEastbourne Eagles return to Elite League action on Monday in front of the Sky TV cameras. The Sussex club are at the halfway point in this year’s fixtures with club bosses urging the riders to push on and build on a wonderful start to the season. Team manager Trevor Geer said: “The 16-day break between fixtures has given the riders a chance to recharge their batteries after a really hectic spell. “We always believed when building this team that the Lifestyle Eagles would make a serious challenge for honours and it’s important we get back to winning ways against Peterborough. “The team know what is needed. They work well together and we’ve had some brilliant results so far. Let’s keep it going and put on a great show for the fans at Arlington and those watching around the country on television.” The visit of Peterborough means the first return to Arlington for Nicki Pedersen, the three times word champion who starred for the Eagles from mid-2003 to the end of 2007. Since then he has not ridden in the Elite League until returning for the 2011 campaign with Peterborough. Co-promoter Mike Bellerby said: “Nicki will always have a special place in the history of Eastbourne Speedway but he can expect no favours on his return to Arlington. “It is great that he is back in British speedway and I am not surprised Sky selected this meeting for their visit to Sussex this year. “He’s a great entertainer on track and I hope our fans will turn out and support their team. It really does make a difference to the riders when they can hear fans cheering.” For this fixture we will have a Kids Free promotion. Children (up to 12) will be admitted to the match free, if they have a voucher from that day’s Argus newspaper. The Argus will be on sale outside the turnstiles. Commenting on this latest initiative, Commercial Manager Chris Macdonald said: “As we are not racing on our usual race-day, we wanted to be fair as possible to our supporters and we hope that this little extra will help. The Argus are fully supporting our efforts and there will be plenty of papers on sale at the stadium.” www.eastbourneeagles

Eastbourne bounced back to form with a convincing 55-41 home success over Peterborough.
Bjarne Pedersen and Lewis Bridger had a 5-1 in heat 15 to make sure of the maximum three-point haul after two double-points race wins had kept Panthers alive.
Bridger, who endured a nightmare loan spell at Peterborough this time last year, and fit-again skipper Cameron Woodward were the stars of a good all-round display by the Elite League leaders.
Former Eastbourne captain Lee Richardson guested for injured Nicki Pedersen and did a good job at No.1 for the visitors.
He had a double-points win, then expertly slowed down at the line to allow Troy Batchelor to complete the 8-1 in heat 13 which kept the meeting alive.
But Eagles, whose makeshift line-up was beaten by King's Lynn last time out, had seven 5-1s and were generally well in command.
Eagles: Woodward 14+1 (6), Bridger 11+1 (5), Pedersen 9+1 (5), Kylmakorpi 8 (4), Dryml 7+2 (4), Gustafsson 6+2 (4), Lahti 0 (3).
Peterborough: Richardson 13+1^ (5), Batchelor 13^ (5), Buczkowski 5 (4), Sundstrom 4+1 (4), Kosciuch 3+1 (4), North 3+1 (5), Gomolski 0 (3).

BRITISH FINAL - IT'S WIDE OPEN!
WOLVERHAMPTON Speedway owner Chris Van Straaten believes Monday’s British Final at Monmore is the most open in recent years.
Van Straaten is proud to host the showpiece event for a second successive season and a bumper crowd is expected, especially with so many West Midlands-based riders from Wolves (Tai Woffinden), Birmingham (Danny King and Ben Barker) and Coventry (Eddie Kennett) in the field.
And special guests for the night will be husband and wife duo Hugh Porter MBE, the four-time World Cycling champion who is also a Freeman of the City of Wolverhampton, and Anita Lonsbrough MBE who won gold for swimming in the 1960 Olympics in Tokyo.
Said Van Straaten: “It’s a tremendous line-up and very hard to predict a winner. It’s the most open for years.
“Not only is the national title on the line which every British rider wants, but there is also the opportunity to qualify for the British Grand Prix at Cardiff as the wildcard.
“We are very proud to stage this event and we look forward to welcoming the fans, the riders and our special guests.” There’s also free face painting for the youngsters.
Said Van Straaten: “I’m sure there will be a lot of children with British colours splashed on their face. It should be a great night for the whole family.”

Yawn It's hard to disagree but the Cardiff spot does make it slightly interesting, and moreover will be our only British representation in 2012. I can't see Harris making top 8 or getting another wildcard BRITISH FINAL - MONDAY, PREVIEW (wolves web) TAI Woffinden carries Wolverhampton’s hopes of glory in the British Final at Monmore Green on Monday (7.30). Woffinden, 20, was handed one of two wildcard spots for the showpiece event after missing his semi-final through injury. And he’s determined to take the opportunity with both hands on his home track with both the national title on the line and a place at Cardiff’s Millenium Stadium for the British Grand Prix on June 25. Said Woffinden: “I was really pleased to get a place in the British Final. I was keeping my fingers crossed and thankfully I was awarded a place. “It’s a tough line-up and it should be a good meeting. I want to add the national title to my British Under-21 title.” Belle Vue’s Chris Harris is the current holder of the title and Swindon’s Scott Nicholls won the Cardiff wildcard. Meanwhile Scunthorpe's Ben Wilson and Sheffield’s Josh Auty have been ruled out through injury and replaced by Jerran Hart and Oliver Allen respectively. BRITISH FINAL LINE-UP: Tai Woffinden, Lewis Bridger, Daniel King, David Howe, Scott Nicholls, Oliver Allen, Jordan Frampton, Stuart Robson, Richard Hall, Edward Kennett, Ben Barker, Jerran Hart, Leigh Lanham, Chris Harris, Lee Richardson, Ricky Ashworth.
