Eagles relieved to get back on the track
Eastbourne boss Trevor Geer admits he will be happy to watch some racing and forget the off-track controversies when the tapes go up again at Arlington.
Eagles host Poole Pirates on Sunday (5pm) as they step up their preparations for the 2011 season with a tough-looking challenge fixture.
Speedway headlines have been dominated by wranglings away from the track in the months since the South Coast rivals brought the curtain down on the 2010 season with a thrilling Knockout Cup final.
Lawyers have been involved as Coventry and Peterborough attempted to settle their differences with rival clubs over team-building policy.
As the arguments raged, however, Eastbourne remained quietly convinced they had put together a set-up who could compete with the best the Elite League could offer.
Now they get the long-awaited chance to see if their faith is well-founded.
Team manager and co-promoter Geer said: “We can’t wait to get started.
“This fixture gives us a good feel for how good we are going to be this season. We’re going against a good side and I want to see our boys score some points and earn some money.”

Gustafsson leads super Eagles
Simon Gustafsson stole the show tonight as Eastbourne made a perfect start to their Elite League campaign.
The young Swede won five out five as Eagles hammered Wolverhampton 57-38 at Arlington.
They scored three 5-1s in the space of four races from heat seven to take a stranglehold on proceedings.
Freddie Lindgren, who had earlier been handed his first defeat of the season by Gustafsson, had a double points win in heat 11 to keep Wolves in touch.
But a brilliant 5-1 by Bjarne Pedersen and Joonas Kylmakorpi over Lindgren and Peter Karlsson in heat 13 ended their hopes.
Eagles had the bonus point sewn up with a race to spare.
Gustafsson then led from the tapes in heat 15 with Pedersen right behind for a fitting finale.
Eagles: Gustafsson 15 (5), Pedersen 12+1 (5), Bridger 9+1 (5), Kylmakorpi 8+1 (4), Dryml 7+3 (4), Woodward 6+2 (4), Lampart 0 (3).
Wolves: F.Lindgren 12^ (5), Karlsson 8 (5), Wells 7+2 (5), Woffinden 4^ (4), Proctor 3 (4), L.Lindgren 2+1 (4), Burmeister 2 (3).

Eastbourne Eagles have told Taylor Poole he has a great chance of sharing their vacant reserve place.
But boss Trevor Geer insists the young Australian is under no pressure to shine as he goes at No.7 at home to Belle Vue tonight (7.30pm).
Poole, a highly-rated 18-year-old from Sydney, was named by Eagles as their No.8 for the current season, which would have led to just the occasional stand-in appearance while concentrating on life with Premier League title favourites Ipswich Witches.
However Dawid Lampart’s sudden departure has left Eagles in need of a No.7. They could bring in one man or have two doubling-up riders from the Premier League share the job.
Indications from Arlington are that they would be happy to use Poole at reserve but that means finding someone else to ride when he is needed by Ipswich.
Poole has already shown he means business by scoring 10+1 (5) as Witches opened their league season with a home win over Berwick.
Geer, pictured, said: “We have not got anyone sorted out at the moment. Taylor is very keen to do the job for us and he has been proving himself at Ipswich.
“There won’t be any pressure on him tonight to show what he can do. We already know what he is capable of. It will be his first meeting for us on a track he doesn’t know well so you need to give him time.
“It will be a tough night for him and he might only get three rides, depending how the meeting is going.
“We need another rider like him, young, up-and-coming, who doesn’t ride for a Saturday track and is not already tied up with an Elite League team.”
Geer revealed Eagles also have a short list of young overseas riders, similar to Lampart, to consider.
Team GB star Chris Harris leads the Aces attack at Arlington tonight. Geer said: “He is always worth coming out to watch and has produced some good results at our place.”

EASTBOURNE EAGLES v. BELLE VUE ACES
ELITE LEAGUE A MATCH : SATURDAY 2nd APRIL 2011 (7.30p.m. Start)
life-eagle-logoThe mandate governing the members of the Eastbourne ‘Lifestyle’ Eagles couldn’t be simpler this coming weekend, ‘much more of the same please’ being the rallying cry from the clubs management as the Sussex side step out onto the shale at Arlington stadium once again this Saturday evening (with a 7.30 p.m. start time), the team in opposition bearing arguably the most famous name that the Sport of Speedway has to offer, Manchester’s mighty Belle Vue Aces. In contrast to a somewhat stuttering start to their 2010 campaign, the Eastbourne Class of 2011 has certainly hit the ground running this time around with handsome victories to report against Poole, albeit an injury ravaged Pirates outfit, in a Challenge on opening night but more impressively than that, the Wolverhampton Wolves, themselves expected to figure highly when the prizes come to be distributed, also fell by the wayside as the Eagles ran rampant once again at Arlington last week. Clearly the Sussex hierarchy would relish a further such triumph with which to maintain their own charge for honours as the Aces hit town but under no circumstances will they be underestimating the challenge that awaits them, the side representing the boys from Kirkmanshulme Lane possessing a solid all round look with possible surprise package or two resplendent within their ranks. Topping the bill and without question providing their main Box Office is no other than Chris ‘Bomber’ Harris, Grand Prix superstar, current Elite League Riders Champion, former British G.P. winner and of course the man whose heroics captivated the Sports viewing public in last seasons Play Off Final as the Coventry Bees snatched the Elite League title from under the very noses of the team considered lava hot to take the gold, the Poole Pirates. With the Bees, who had only just squeaked into the sections top four in the closing few matches over the regular season holding a 12-point first leg from their Brandon home leg hopes of an upset may have been high but with the Pirates halving that advantage in the opening races that very aspiration couldn’t help but diminish. When Harris not only took a nasty tumble, but was subsequently run over by team mate Lewis Bridger, now a welcome returnee to the Eastbourne ranks of course, unable to take avoiding action, with the unwelcome sight of an ambulance taking to the track, his night looked to be over and doubtless the bookies were preparing to pay out on a bolt on Poole victory. The only factor surely missing from the scene was the Superman theme tune as Harris rose to his feet and literally ran back to the pits, proceeded to win the rerun, whilst racked with pain let it be said, remained unbeaten thereafter and masterminded a quite extraordinary title winning performance for his side, one that provided all the high drama worthy of such an occasion and ensured a wholly memorable spectacle. That is in essence what Chris Harris is capable of achieving and given that he is also an Arlington track specialist and now heads up the Belle Vue offensive, each and every one of the Eagles will need to be at their very best if they are to contain his powerhouse potential. With the Aces having also made it a winning start to their own League campaign, a 52-42 victory against the newly elevated King’s Lynn Stars last Monday evening setting them off on the right road, they, just like the Eagles will surely be anxious to keep that winning momentum going. Instrumental in their triumph over the Norfolk collective was Danish star in the making Patrick Hougaard who enjoyed an unbeaten12-point maximum on that occasion, a total matched by Rory Schlein, newly returned to Belle Vue and another who has often demonstrated the quickest path around the Sussex circuit, although the Australian’s tally was amassed from five rides. Undoubtedly, many eyes will be cast towards another new recruit to the Aces line up, that of former Eagle Ricky Kling. The young Swede, unable to be accommodate in this years Eastbourne side due to average restrictions, enjoyed his best performance in Eagles colours against the Manchester club, a fantastic paid 15-point maximum that culminated with a victory in the nominated riders race against Aces heavy hitters of the time Hans Andersen and Peter Karlsson. Impressive stuff indeed, certainly the Eastbourne fans thought as much. However, should Kling be able to provide any sort of a repeat this weekend, the Eagles could well find themselves with a fight on their hands. Supporters are again reminded that the Eagles ‘Kids for a Quid’ promotion, in conjunction with the Argus newspaper, will be in force this once again weekend as it will throughout the entirety of the 2011 season. A voucher to the effect will be available inside the weekend edition of the paper, the Argus being available for purchase, if not already acquired in the run up to the meeting, outside the turnstiles ahead of Saturday’s meeting. Teams : Eagles : 1. Bjarne Pedersen, 2. Lukas Dryml, 3. Simon Gustafsson, 4. Cameron Woodward (Captain), 5. Joonas Kylmakorpi, 6. Lewis Bridger, 7. Taylor Poole. Aces : 1. Chris Harris 2. A.N. EASTBOURNE 66 BRUMMIES 24
BIRMINGHAM suffered a thumping 66-24 defeat at Elite League title hopefuls Eastbourne last night.
Graham Drury’s men were put to the sword by an Eagles team who made it three wins on the trot at their tricky Arlington track. They had already dispatched of strongly fancied Wolverhampton and Belle Vue.
From the moment Lukas Dryml was allowed back in the rerun of the first race despite clearly causing the stoppage things went against the Brummies.
To rub salt into Birmingham’s wounds, he won the rerun and partnered Bjarne Pedersen for a maximum over Ales Dryml with an angry Kryzsztof Kasprzak trailing at the back.
Ben Barker and Daniel Nermark both suffered falls in the first half of the meeting but were thankfully able to pick themselves up and continue.
And both Danny King and Kasprzak were used as tactical rides but they failed to beat an Eastbourne rider for double points.
EASTBOURNE: Joonas Kylmakorpi 13+2, Lukas Dryml 12, Simon Gustafsson 12, Lewis Bridger 11+1, Bjarne Pedersen 8+2, Cameron Woodward 6+3, Lubos Tomicek 4+2
BIRMINGHAM: Ben Barker 6, Sam Masters 4+2, Daniel King 4+1, Daniel Nermark, Ales Dryml 3, Krzysztof Kasprzak 2+1, Kyle Hughes 1.

Poole lost their league unbeaten tag following a crushing defeat by league leaders Eastbourne Eagles who now boast a 100% league record from 5 starts. After impressive wins at Birmingham and Wolverhampton the Pirates just couldn’t find any answers to an Eagles side who were inspired by birthday boy Lukas Dryml who celebrated his 30th birthday with a paid 11 return. His only defeat of the night came at the hands of the returning Darcy Ward who made a solid 2011 Pirate debut just 5 weeks after breaking his wrist and shoulder. Ward scored 10 of Poole’s 39 point haul whilst Chris Holder contributed 15 others, and skipper Davey Watt weighing in with a modest 8 points, including a brilliant winning tactical ride in heat 9 as he blitzed by Simon Gustafsson and opposing captain Cameron Woodward. But apart from two 6-3 advantages by virtue of double points the Pirates, failed to score a heat advantage as the Eagles stormed to their biggest league win over a Poole side since 2002.
Eastbourne 57 - B.Pedersen 10+2, L.Dryml 10+1, L.Bridger 10, J.Kylmakorpi 9+2, C.Woodward 8+1, S.Gustafsson 6+3, T.Poole 4+1
Poole 39 - C.Holder 15, D.Ward 10+1, D.Watt 8, C.Hefenbrock 4, J.Grajczonek 2, R.Gafurov 0, (Rider replacement operated for J.Doyle)

Flying Eagles win again - local journos he'll be using Great Dane and Bouncing Czech next Eastbourne restored their four-point lead at the top of the Elite League with a convincing win over Poole tonight. They made it five wins from five so far with a 57-39 success at Arlington. Eagles had victory sewn up after heat 12 and the bonus point a race later. Caemron Woodward then produced one of the rides of the season to go outside Darcy Ward and inside Christian Hefenbrock and win heat 14. Lewis Bridger produced another super display at reserve, notably with wins in heats 11 and 12 going wide around the opening two bends to take command on each occasion. Stand-in reserve Taylor Poole delighted home fans by beating former Eagles skipper Davey Watt in heat four, one of four home 5-1s. Poole had two double-points wins, for Chris Holder and Watt. Holder scored 15 of a possible 18 to lead the Pirates, who were missing second string Jason Doyle and star reserve Dennis Andersson. The result keeps Eagles in great heart as they prepare to track an unchanged team at Wolverhampton on Monday. Eagles: Pedersen 10+2 (5), Dryml 10+1 (4), Bridger 10 (4), Kylmakorpi 9+2 (5), Woodward 8+1 (4), Gustafsson 6+3 (4), Poole 4+1 (4). theargus

EAGLES GO EIGHT CLEAR Saturday April 23, 2011 EASTBOURNE have extended their lead at the top of the Elite League table with home and away wins over Lakeside on Good Friday. The Eagles snatched their second away win of the season at Purfleet in the last race, and then overcame spirited resistance from the Hammers to take the Arlington meeting 50-43.Manager Trevor Geer said: “When I saw they were minus Adam Shields and (Piotr) Swiderski I thought they might be a bit of a push-over for us. It was certainly too close for comfort. “At the end of the day we have got six league points and are still clear at the top of the table. We would have been happy with four points today so it has been a good effort.” bspa

After two consecutive defeats the King's Lynn 'Roger Warnes Transport' Stars bounced back to produce an away victory over Elite League leaders Eastbourne at their fortress Arlington on Saturday night. It has become very rare for teams to take points away from visits to the Eagles but a patched up Stars team were able to win by three points on the night. Without key riders Olly and Mads in the middle order of the team and with Niels and Lasse riding in a Danish semi-final the management booked Rory Schlein, Kevin Doolan and Josh Auty to ride for the club. Kenneth Bjerre and Sam Masters gave the Stars an early advantage in the opening heat, Kenneth was able to resist a challenge from Eagles number one Bjarne Pedersen who was close for the duration of the race. King's Lynn were able to keep their lead in tact with good passing moves from Josh Auty and Filip Sitera around Eastbourne reserve Timo Lahti to level heat two behind Cameron Woodward, guest Rory Schlein won the fourth heat before Kenneth and Sam worked well in heat five to extend the Stars lead to six points. With the Stars able to match the home team it took the Eagles ten heats before they scored a heat advantage in the meeting, Kevin Doolan was able to split Pedersen and guest Ty Proctor to keep a four point lead heading into the interval. After the break, the partnership of Kenneth & Sam kept on going and their second maximum heat of the night came from excellent gating. Rory Schlein won the crucial heat 13 with Kenneth finishing in third place which opened the gap between the teams to ten points. But the home team finished the stronger team in the final two heats, Lewis Bridger won heat 14 on a tactical ride and he came out and won heat 15 with team mate Bjarne Pedersen in second place to reduce the gap between the teams to three points. starsweb Eastbourne Eagles = 451. The King's Lynn 'Roger Warnes Transport' Stars moved up to second in the league after securing a well deserved away point against Eastbourne on Saturday night.
The Stars were without the injured Mads Korneliussen who has proved to be a vital team member this season, the management booked a former Eagles rider in Davey Watt for the meeting while in the number two team spot was operated as rider replacement because Sam Masters was riding for Somerset and Tomas Topinka is injured.
It was a close meeting between the league leaders and the Stars, Kenneth Bjerre continued on for his maximum against Coventry with a opening heat win ahead of Cameron Woodward & Bjarne Pedersen.
The deadlock between the teams was broken in heat three when guest Davey Watt fell on the opening lap and in the re run Olly Allen was able to split the home pair of Simon Gustafsson and Joonas Kylmakorpi.
Their lead didn't last long however, Niels-Kristian Iversen took victory in the fourth heat with new asset of the club Filip Sitea in third place which levelled the meeting up 12 points each.
Heats six and seven gave the Stars an eight point lead after Niels & Filip were able to hold of the Eagles pairing of Pedersen and Woodward before guest Davey Watt and Captain Olly Allen scored a successive maximum heat.
Heat advantage either side of the interval for the home team closed the gap to four points and when Kenneth Bjerre was beaten for the first time in the meeting in heat 11 the Eagles had drawn level with the Stars.
A second 5-1 for Eastbourne put the Stars four points behind with three races to go, an away point was secured in heat 14 when Lukas Dryml fell and found himself excluded from the rerun where Davey Watt and Filip Sitera followed Kylmakorpi home for a level heat.
Kenneth and Niels finished the meeting off with a heat advantage which closed the gap between the teams to just two point and second place in the Elite League.

EASTBOURNE EAGLES v. WOLVERHAMPTON WOLVES
KNOCKOUT CUP MATCH (1st Leg) : SATURDAY 18th JUNE 2011 (7.30p.m. Start)
life-eagleSussex Speedway squad go ‘Up for the Cup’ this weekend as Black country outfit, the Wolverhampton Wolves make their second visit of the 2011 campaign to Arlington Stadium on Saturday evening with a 7.30p.m. start time.
While still handily placed at the business end of the Elite League table, the Sussex battlers temporarily set aside that particular quest for honours as they renew acquaintance with Knockout Cup action against Wolverhampton, a competition that has proffered more than a few golden moments in their long and glittering career.
Indeed the last two seasons has pitched the Eagles against their long time rivals for Monmore Green, the 2010 equivalent coming at the semi final stage and rewarding the Sussex men with one of their most emphatic performances over two legs against the Midlanders.
Tradition dictates that visits to Arlington has often proved one of the Wolves preferred away days, such is the similar nature of the two clubs circuits.
Somehow, they haven’t proved quite so prolific on each of their last two visits. The corresponding Cup fixture in season 2010 realised an emphatic 63-29 victory for the Eagles, a result that all but killed the tie stone dead ahead of the second leg. There was still a story to tell however, the Sussex outfit wrapping up the two legged victory in fine style, a further 46-44 triumph at the home of the Wolves putting to an end their unbeaten home sequence of some two seasons standing.
From this Eastbourne proceeded to their second Knockout Cup Final in the space of three years and the second against the Poole Pirates. Their hopes of emulating their 2008 aggregate victory against the Dorset side, one still stinging from Play Off Final defeat against the Coventry Bees, were dashed however, the Pirates overcoming a spirited Eastbourne performance to win by an overall 5-point margin.
Wolverhampton’s subsequent visit to the Sussex venue doubled as the Eastbourne curtain raiser to official competition in 2011 as they formed the opposition in Eagles opening Elite League fixture of the campaign.
The occasion witnessed little to choose between the sides during the opening exchanges but the hosts pulled away from their visitors with a trio of 5-1’s in the mid part of the match. Despite a tactical success that garnered a 6-point win for Wolves hot shot Fredrik Lindgren and a 7-2 that brought them back into the match, it was the Eagles who finished the contest with a further brace of maximum advantages to run out 57-38 winners.
A similar result this time around would not only set the Sussex men up nicely for the return visit to Monmore Green, scheduled for Monday July 25th but would also provide a huge confidence booster ahead of their forthcoming Monday night League fixture in front of the SKY Sports cameras at the Brandon home of the Coventry Bees with Russian Grand Prix exponent Emil Sayfutdinov most likely providing the star turn.
Co-Promoter Mike Bellerby, eagerly anticipating Saturday’s fixture against Wolverhampton commented “Clearly we remain handily placed for a Play Off place and that of course remains the top priority for us. However, we are just as keen to do well in the Knockout Cup; after all it is a competition that has always been close to our hearts, senior league successes in 1994, 97, 2002 and most recently 2008 providing some of the proudest moments in the Clubs History”.
“With something of a break in fixtures heading into the month of July it is essential that we send our supporters home with a fine performance to reflect upon, one that will sustain them in the weeks leading up to our next home meeting” he continued.
“With Fredrik Lindgren heading the Wolves offensive, Peter Karlsson, who currently appears to be in the form of his life and Team GB Star Tai Woffinden in the opposition side of the pits, it certainly isn’t going to be easy, I certainly envisage another fantastic night of action at Arlington on Saturday he concluded”.
The Eagles will go into action missing the talents of skipper Cameron Woodward; the Australian will be furthering his ambition in the Grand Prix Qualifier over the weekend. Eastbourne shall operate the Rider Replacement facility to cover his absence while Joonas Kylmakorpi assumes the Captain’s role for the evening.
Yet again Supporters are reminded that the Eagles ‘Kids for a Quid’ promotion, in conjunction with the Argus newspaper, is still in force for the Saturday night clash Cup encounter with the Wolves, just as it will throughout the remainder of the 2011 season.

KO CUP 1st leg: EASTBOURNE 50 WOLVES 40WOLVERHAMPTON’S Knockout Cup quarter-final with Eastbourne is delicately poised after the Eagles established a ten-point lead from the first leg at Arlington on Saturday. Parrys International Wolves kept the scores close for much of the meeting with the home side only building their advantage in the final four heats on a damp, drizzly night on the south coast. Although the score went from 34-32 to 50-40 in the closing stages, it was still a good rearguard action from the Monmore men in a meeting where several of their middle and lower-order stepped up to the challenge with a couple of their top men down on their usual form. Peter Karlsson and Ricky Wells picked up a 5-1 in Heat 4 after Lewis Bridger crashed out, and Wolves briefly led thanks to a 4-2 in the next race only to be immediately equalised in Heat 6. Bridger and flying reserve Lukas Dryml put Eastbourne four points to the good in Heat 7 but that was as far as they got thanks to a string of wins from Karlsson, Ludvig Lindgren and Ty Proctor which resulted in a series of shared heats and then a Wolves 4-2 in Heat 11. But the home side responded by taking thirteen points from the next three races with Dryml completing a remarkable performance in which he only dropped one point in seven rides. Wolves were desperate not to let the margin go above ten points and they achieved that in Heat 15 as although Freddie Lindgren was disqualified for bringing down Bjarne Pedersen, Karlsson was clear up-front for his third win of the night. The second leg takes place at Monmore Green on July 25, but before that Wolves face up to the mouth-watering prospect of a visit from a Peterborough side including Nicki Pedersen on Monday. EASTBOURNE 50: Lukas Dryml 17+3 Bjarne Pedersen 11+2, Lewis Bridger 10, Joonas Kylmakorpi 6, Simon Gustafsson 4+1, Timo Lahti 2, Cameron Woodward r/r. WOLVERHAMPTON 40: Peter Karlsson 12, Ricky Wells 6+3, Ludvig Lindgren 6+1, Ty Proctor 6, Fredrik Lindgren 5, Tai Woffinden 3, Tyson Burmeister 2. wolvesweb

KO CUP 1st leg: EASTBOURNE 50 WOLVES 40EASTBOURNE 50: Lukas Dryml 17+3 Its called a one track pony but in Lukas's point I think Donkey or Ass might be more appropriate. Lukas is running a 8.50 home GSA against 3.50 away GSA just to emphasise the point. Whats the betting he will get 1 at Monmore in the return or nothing if its wet.

EASTBOURNE 59 ROBINS 34
SWINDON were sent crashing to a 59-34 Elite League defeat on a sun-drenched Saturday afternoon at Eastbourne.
The Robins were always behind against the play-off chasers and the loss at the Arlington Stadium still leaves them at the foot of the league table.
The Eagles were quicker from the starts in the early races and by the time Heat 4 had been completed they had built up a 17-7 lead – and it was one they never came close to surrendering.
Scott Nicholls went for double-points in Heat 5 in a hope to reduce the deficit but the tactical move proved disastrous. He attempted to pass Cameron Woodward on the opening lap but fell after making a hash of the third bend and was excluded from the re-run. In the re-start Lewis Bridger and Woodward held on for another 5-1 ahead of Jesper B Monberg.
Another home maximum followed in Heat 7, but Swindon did get better reward from their tactical ride in Heat 8. Nicolai Klindt donned the black and white helmet and won the race from the gate ahead of Woodward and Eagles guest Ryan Fisher, with the resulting 6-3 still leaving Eastbourne in an unassailable 33-18 lead.
And that was as close as the Robins were to get with the Eagles pulling further clear in the second half of the meeting and comfortably securing the three Elite League points.
EASTBOURNE 59: Joonas Kylmakorpi 17+1, Bjarne Pedersen 13+2, Lewis Bridger 11, Ryan Fisher 8+2, Cameron Woodward 7+2, Timo Lahti 3, Simon Gustafsson R/R.
SWINDON 34: Nicolai Klindt 11, Ricky Kling 8, Jesper B Monberg 5+2, Scott Nicholls 5, Simon Stead 4+1, Cory Gathercole 1+1, Maciej Janowski R/R.

RIVALS CLOSING IN ON TOP PIRATESMatters have tightened up considerably at the top of the Sky Sports Elite league table following the Pirates humbling 35-57 defeat by Eastbourne which has moved the Sussex club to just two points behind table topping Poole, whilst an away victory for Coventry at Lakeside has moved last year's champions into a threatening 5th place a point outside of the top four but with matches in hand. Poole's miserable night at their south coast rivals began when they took a call from Christian Hefenbrock who was stranded on the M25 at around 4pm. With traffic at a standstill and no progress made in the previous two hours the Pirates hastily called James Holder, who was intending to make the trip as a support crew to brother Chris, to ensure he came equipped with his own bikes and kit and ready to step into the breach at number 7. The elder Holder completed the dash of mercy, arriving trackside just 15 minutes before the scheduled time, some 45 minutes after Eagles' number one Bjarne Pedersen had arrived after he too had been held up in traffic. The Pirates kept things fairly tight over the first third of the meeting, the true highlight being a great ride from Dennis Andersson in heat 6 to partner Chris Holder, on his second success of the night, for a match levelling 5-1, but that was to prove the Pirates only genuine heat advantage. For whilst skipper Davey Watt and Jason Doyle outpointed the Eagles in heat 12 it was courtesy of Watt's tactical ride second place behind Simon Gustafsson, doubling his two points to four for a Poole 5-3, by which time the meeting was rapidly slipping away from the Pirates. All too frequently the Eagles were taking control of the first turns, and it was to prove not to be Poole's day when on more than one occasion they appeared to have the advantage in a relatively even starts only for the referee to call the race back. The Pirates effectively relied on their big-guns Chris Holder and Darcy Ward, five race wins between them and the only two Pirates to take a chequered flag. But the normally impenetrable duo had to twice concede second best when they partnered up in heats 13 and 15 against the Pedersen/Kylmakorpi pairing. In truth the determination by the two Pirates in heat 13 was only matched by the frustrations of two called back starts, the second time Ward taking a heavy fall that caused more than a few anxious moments before he was able to hobble back to the pits for the third re-start. With these two clubs due to meet in KO Cup semi-final combat and both still well positioned for places in the play-offs the magnitude of the defeat will certainly serve as a stark reminder to the Pirates that the next couple of months and going to prove to be very tough indeed. EASTBOURNE 57 - C.Woodward 15+1 (2,3,2',2',3,2',1), B.Pedersen 11+2 (1',2,2',3,3), J.Kylmakorpi 10+1 (1',3,3,1,2'), S.Gustafsson 9+1 (1,1,3,1',3), L.Bridger 8 (3,0,2,3), T.Lahti 4+1 (1,2,1',0) POOLE 35 - C.Holder 10 (3,3,1,2,1), D.Ward 9 (3,3,3,0,0), D.Watt 8 (2,1,1,4), J.Doyle 6+1 (2,0,1,0,1',2), D.Andersson 2+1 (0,2',F,FDq), R.Gafurov 0 (0,0,0,), J.Holder 0 (0,0,0,) pooleweb
