Lakeside Hammers 56 – Swindon Robins 38
The doors opened on the 2011 season at the home of the Lakeside Hammers as the Essex men put on a strong display to run out comfortable winners against Swindon.
With both teams hit by the dispute over Polish participation due to the new silencer introduction, the visiting Robins had a somewhat makeshift look to them with both Maciej Janowski and Tomasz Chrzanowski missing and the Hammers themselves minus Piotr Swiderski.
Nonetheless, it was a very determined performance from the home team that was spearheaded by a masterful display from Lee Richardson, who stormed to a paid maximum from his five rides.
It was a commanding display from the Hammers skipper, who formed a potent partnership with Kauko Nieminen as the pair were paid for 5-1 advantages in each of their three programmed rides together.
The highlight of this dynamic duo’s outings was in heat ten, when first Nieminen and then Richardson stormed past fast starting Simon Stead to steal another 5-1. Equally, Lewis Bridger proved a very useful stand-in for the home side, storming to three victories including an impressive from the back win over Stead in heat nine.
Despite the commanding scoreline, there was some close racing to savour, particularly in the latter stages of the meeting. Nieminen was again in the thick of the action in heat eight, driving past former Hammer Leigh Lanham to take victory and prevent the Robins’ guest from tasting tactical ride success.
Visiting number one Scott Nicholls had a mixed night, opening the meeting on the wrong end of a 5-1 and touching the tapes in heat thirteen. Things came good in the last race, though, as Nicholls put on a spectacular effort to chase down Richardson and narrowly missed out on final heat glory by half a bikes length.
Comfortable this may have been, but it proved a good warm-up for both sides and the Hammers now look to next week and an eagerly awaited clash against track specialists Wolverhampton.

LAKESIDE V WOLVES - PREVIEW
WOLVERHAMPTON face another tricky trip south when they head to Lakeside on Friday (8pm).
The Monmore men opened their Elite League season with a defeat at Eastbourne last weekend and are now looking to get something from their trip to Purfleet.
The Parrys International Wolves are unchanged from the side which went down to the Eagles last Saturday and Lakeside have brought back Swede Jonas Davidsson in place of the unavailable Piotr Swiderski.
Skipper Peter Karlsson said: "It certainly means we have a tough opening to our Elite LEague programme but we are hopeful of getting something from Lakeside.
"It's a smaller track and hopefully our two reserves will feel comfortable on it. We will go there and give it our best."
LAKESIDE: Lee Richardson, Kauko Nieminen, Adam Shields, Jonas Davidsson, Peter Ljung, Robert Mear, Kyle Legault.
WOLVERHAMPTON: Freddie Lindgren, Ludvig Lindgren, Ty Proctor, Tai Woffinden, Peter Karlsson, Tyson Burmeister, Ricky Wells.

Lakeside Hammers 48 – Wolverhampton Wolves 45
The Hammers recovered well from the mid-meeting loss of number one Lee Richardson to overcome Raceway specialists Wolverhampton.
Richardson crashed out of the tenth heat whilst attempting to round the Wolves pairing of Tyron Proctor and Tai Woffinden, hitting the track hard on the third turn and enduring lengthy medical attention. After some time down on the ground he was taken away in an ambulance with tissue damage and did not re-appear – but Hammers fought valiantly over the final few heats to ensure they collected enough points to see off their opponents.
There was some good on-track action throughout and proceedings were made interesting to say the least in the early part of the meeting when a sticky patch of the track on the second turn caused the riders a few problems. The opening heat had seen Richardson pull clear of Fredrik Lindgren to join Kauko Nieminen at the front of the race, only to falter on said turn and leave a window open for Lindgren to snatch second place.
Most eyes were on Lindgren, arguably the Elite League’s star performer, although even he on this occasion was outshone by his team mate Peter Karlsson, who raced to a quite superb eighteen points maximum and looked faultless throughout. This was save when he was out-trapped by Peter Ljung in heat four but handed the race victory when Ljung ran into trouble on that second bend.
Ljung recovered well from the mishap and rattled off a couple of wins, producing a couple of electrifying starts and featuring in an excellent clash with Woffinden in heat seven. His major highlight, though, came in heat eleven as he powered from the tapes and left Lindgren in his wake, pulling off an excellent victory and a 4-2 heat advantage for his team alongside Kyle Legault.
That heat put the Hammers ten points to the good although the smart money was on Wolves’ boss Peter Adams reserving his tactical ride option until heat thirteen with Lindgren and Karlsson present rather than the immediate heat twelve. How vital, then, that the home side took maximum points from that race and it was thanks to a fighting 5-1 from Adam Shields alongside Legault, who drove in front of Proctor down the backstraight to join his team-mate.
The expected tactical manoeuvre did arrive in heat thirteen and with Richardson missing the 8-1 was somewhat inevitable, although Ljung did try very hard and pushed both Karlsson and Lindgren hard. The chance to sew up the match presented itself in heat fourteen, though, and the home pairing of Legault and the returning Jonas Davidsson duly slotted in behind Woffinden to ensure victory.
Wolves notched up a consolation league point with another Lindgren/Karlsson 5-1 in the final race but the home side nonetheless started their 2011 Elite League campaign with a win and several encouraging displays to show for it, too.

Hard fought win over AcesThis meeting went down to the wire as the Hammers held on in the final race to edge out winners by three points over Belle Vue. The scene was set early on when the opening race produced a whole series of passes as Kauko Nieminen and Charlie Gjedde passed and re-passed in a battle for third place, with the Aces getting the upper hand. The determination of the visitors was evident in the fourth outing when Rory Schlein was rewarded for inside line perseverance as Peter Ljung drifted wide. It was Ljung’s retirement from heat seven that saw the Aces draw level through Patrick Hougaard and former Hammer Ricky Kling, giving first warning that this meeting was certainly no formality. The visitor’s momentum was stopped in heat eight when Gjedde was judged to have caused a spill between him and team mate Kozza Smith and Kauko Niemimen duly led a home 4-2 in the re-run. This was followed by a very comprehensive 5-1 from Adam Shields and Piotr Swiderski over Schlein in heat nine and Lee Richardson and Nieminen over Kling in the tenth. British star Chris Harris came to the fore after a sticky start to the meeting in heat eleven, taking a tactically nominated outing and turning it into a fruitful one for the Aces as they claimed seven points. Harris’ next outing, though, did most damage as he hunted down and overhauled Richardson in heat thirteen to join Schlein for a 5-1 to pull the Aces to within one point. Swiderski continued a fine 2011 home debut in the penultimate race to register a vital 4-2 with Robert Mear before popping out of the start in the last heat decider to ensure victory on the night belonged to the Hammers, leaving Belle Vue the consolation of a league point for the narrow defeat. Eagles take Good Friday spoils
Eastbourne took the opening bout of the Good Friday double header action when they came from behind to snatch victory in the final race of this Elite League clash at Purfleet.
The Eagles had trailed for the whole meeting but found themselves level with the home team going into the final race – with Hammers hopeful of at least getting a draw out of the encounter with Lee Richardson lining up on the heavily favoured gate one.
It was Richardson who made the quickest gate, taking an early lead from the Eagles pairing of Bjarne Pedersen and Joonas Kylmakorpi as the sun beat down on the dry conditions.
Kylmakorpi attempted several of his trademark outside dashes but to no avail – but his last effort on the fourth bend of the third lap caused Richardson to move over to block, leaving Pedersen free to drive up the inside and take the lead. Richardson then duly fell on the entry to the first turn, leaving the large Eagles travelling contingent to celebrate an away victory as the eventual 2-4 saw them collect three league points.
It was very close in the early stages but Eagles were never in the lead and the home side should really have capitalised on the early low returns from Pedersen and in-form reserve Lewis Bridger. Gating was vital and both teams were evenly matched in this area although Peter Ljung and Kauko Nieminen lost points when they drifted off of the racing line exiting the second corner and were overhauled by their opponents. This was particularly evident in heat seven when both Simon Gustafsson and Cameron Woodward came from behind to turn a Hammers 5-1 into a 3-3.
The home side suffered bad luck in heat nine when Piotr Swiderski packed up when on a 5-1 with Shields – and a restart of heat eleven gave Eagles a second chance after a Lukas Dryml false start. They duly capitalised too, with Dryml and race partner Pedersen racing to a 5-1 over Ljung and the lively Robert Mear.
The run of bad luck continued when the Hammers lost Shields following a horrific pile-up in heat twelve and with Swiderski reported to be suffering from sickness. Shields’ crash was bad indeed, leading as he was his heat by some margin and taking the Hammers towards a 5-1 until he fell.
Exiting the fourth bend for the last time and comfortably in control, Shields clipped the air fence and then lost control, piling up close to the finish line. Both partner Stuart Robson and opponent Gustafsson avoided him but Eagles newcomer Timo Lahti was not so lucky, piling into the Aussie’s bike and taking a heavy fall.
Shields did not appear again and Lahti took to the St Johns Ambulance treatment table – but the immediate loss to the home side was the four point advantage they were a couple of seconds away from claiming. The potential 5-1 was turned into a 3-3 and Eagles went from looking out of the meeting to being right back in the match – and so it proved in the final outcome.

The Hammers took a comprehensive win at the expense of a depleted Birmingham side, marking a return to winning ways following the Good Friday defeats against Eastbourne. It had been some 25 years since a Birmingham side had appeared at the Arena-Essex Raceway but this wasn’t a return for the Brummies to remember with much fondness. Although guest Edward Kennett put in plenty of effort as usual, the Brummies missed former Hammers Krzysztof Kasprzak and Daniel King and also suffered huge volumes of misfortune throughout the course of the meeting. A total of three paid or full race wins were lost by Brummies riders through mechanical failure, the first coming when Kennett lost a primary chain whilst heading home Peter Ljung and Ricky Wells in heat seven, turning a shared race into a Hammers 5-1. The next came in heat ten when Daniel Nermark had a problem with his engine cut out and stopped abruptly whilst showing a clean pair of heels to the otherwise unbeaten Lee Richardson. Nermark’s misery was complete in the final race when he and Kennett appeared to be heading to a consolidation 5-1 – only for the Swede to stop again. The Hammers, though, did have plenty of good performances to write home about and there were plenty of encouraging performances, particularly from Robert Mear at reserve. Mear was excellent, with plenty of fast, determined racing and three unbeaten opening rides to boot. He missed out on at least another point when an ambitious move to pass Joe Screen in heat twelve went awry but nonetheless it was a strong performance that bodes well for future meetings. The best race of the night by far was in the penultimate heat fourteen when Hammers guest Ricky Wells, who’d been excellent all evening, crossed the line together with Screen and Piotr Swiderski after a superb race in which positions changed regularly. Richardson finished the evening with a four ride full maximum and for a while it looked as though Peter Ljung was going to join him, although his run was stopped in heat thirteen. Richardson produced a superb ride down the backstraight to rein in Kennett and Nermark after the visitors took the early lead from the gate and never looked back.

Much-fancied Poole arrived amidst fanfare but were seen off by a fired-up Hammers, who held on for two Elite League points despite losing many advantages throughout the course of the meeting. The Pirates, pre-season league favourites, swept up the consolation point in the last race thanks to the dynamic Australian duo of Chris Holder and Darcy Ward, who were pretty much the visitor’s key to remaining in touch throughout this contest. Indeed, if it hadn’t been for several points gifted from the Hammers then the margin of victory for the home side would have been much greater. The interest started as early as the first heat when Lee Richardson took the lead from Holder only to hand it back a couple of laps later when he hit the backstraight fence. Little over a lap later Kauko Nieminen suffered a third place engine failure, turning a home 4-2 into an equivalent margin for the Pirates. Hammers were well served by their reserves in this meeting and the lower order duo got off to a great start in heat two, both Rob Mear and Stuart Robson finding a way past race leader and Purfleet debutant Dennis Andersson for a home 5-1. The next few heats were a close run affair with Robson falling in heat four but with the home side building a six point lead two heats later when both Richardson and Nieminen got the better of Davey Watt. Watt did recover from a disastrous start to this heat to chase down Nieminen and almost produced a classic finish, narrowly faltering during the race to the line. There was disaster for Peter Ljung in heat seven when he crashed out in the lead, particularly as Ward was floundering in the minor positions. Perhaps typically, the re-run saw the Pirates claim a 5-1 although Mear did put together a great effort in chasing them down. Robson and Nieminen produced another from-the-back 5-1 in heat eight, overhauling early race leader Dennis Andersson, but the homeside again lost points when Richardson was judged to have help Jason Doyle off on the second turn of the ten and was excluded, much to the chagrin of the home faithful. The Hammers restored their six point advantage following Adam Shields’ defeat of Ward in twelve and, following a shared race in thirteen, the home side make certain of victory in the penultimate race thanks to a 5-1 from Mear and Piotr Swiderski. The Hammers claimed victory in this live televised clash with a two man Wolves team missing out in an eventful last couple of races. The meeting was effectively decided in the penultimate heat fourteen when Ludvig Lindgren lifted and crashed out on the third turn whilst under a heavy challenge from Robert Mear. After a lengthy wait for the decision, Lindgren was excluded and the Hammers claimed a match-winning 5-1 through Mear and Piotr Swiderski. The final heat was equally eventful, with both sides chasing the extra league point. A quick start from Swiderski took him to the front ahead of Fredrik Lindgren but he locked up too tight and fell, leaving team mate Lee Richardson with nowhere to go. Richardson eventually took to his feet but didn’t show for the re-run, nursing a hand injury – and with Swiderski excluded it was Adam Shields who took his skippers’ place, cruising round for the solitary point to ensure the Hammers took the victory but Wolves headed home with the consolation third point. The final heat was equally eventful, with both sides chasing the extra league point. A quick start from Swiderski took him to the front ahead of Fredrik Lindgren but he locked up too tight and fell, leaving team mate Lee Richardson with nowhere to go.
Richardson eventually took to his feet but didn’t show for the re-run:

Good to see that our boys are still as inconsistent as ever. You just never know which will get 5 or which will get 12
Hammers responded to Jon Cook’s call for more bite from the team with a thumping 61-32 demolition of King Lynn. Without Piotr Swiderski and Peter Ljung the Hammers operated RxR and drafted in Ryan Fisher against a full strength Stars side. Heat 1 saw Lee Richardson pass Kenneth Bjerre to join Kauko Nieminen on a 5-1 and that set the tone for the first 5 races. Step up Stuart Robson. Ever the entertainer. Robbo produced passes in his first three rides to help put the Hammers up 23-7 by Heat 5. Indeed Ht 5 was Robbo’s ride of the night as he caught and passed Tactical Rider Kenneth Bjerre and Tomas Topinka for a 5-1 with Adam Shields. There was much determination in evidence in Ht 4 which took 3 goes to run it as Iversen and Guest Fisher came down in each of the first two. Fisher would finish the meeting with a hand injury but not before riding some entertaining races. The Stars second Tactical ride saw Kornelliusen score their only heat advantage in Ht 7 before the Hammers confidence round the first turns started to show and they finished with 4 consecutive heat advantages. Kings Lynn relied heavily on Iversen and Kornelliusen but were no match for the Hammers in this determined mood. Rob Mear again put in a solid performance, and with Shields, Nieminen and Richardson all contributing good points the Hammers second 60 point haul of the season was a welcome relief to the home support. The Great Britain team took this Ashes test series by two matches to nil with this second win at Lakeside on Friday evening.
The eight points victory was achieved in the penultimate race when Danny King and Ben Barker outpaced Davey Watt and Tyron Proctor to ensure that the Lions followed up their earlier win at Poole to claim the series.
The only low point was when Hammer Adam Shields, riding at number two for the visiting team, took a heavy fall in heat three. Taking a rider replacement ride for late illness victim Troy Batchelor, Shields picked up exiting the second turn and crashed alarmingly in the air fence. After some lengthy attention he was eventually taken away in an ambulance – further information will follow when received.

Does anyone actually care about these meaningless internationals when their own club(s) cant even fulfill their own fixtures?

Looked like a cracker @lakesidehammers Lakeside HammersHammers maul Birmingham 63-29 in 2nd leg of k.o. cup. Lee on 18 pt max. Agg 104/65. Hammers thru to semi finals The Hammers swept through to the semi finals of the cup with this thumping victory over Birmingham. The home side enjoyed a points spree as they followed up Thursday night’s victory at Perry Barr with this thirty four points win, led from the front by maximum men Lee Richardson, Piotr Swiderski and Stuart Robson. Richardson completed a maximum double over the two legs from the front, rarely troubled as he took a full eighteen pointer alongside team mate Swiderski, who took a similar score of the paid variety that included a stunning outside pass of Krsysztof Kasprzak in heat eleven. Elbows adrfit and high up against the fence, Swiderski was rewarded for a determined effort with a superb race victory, the highlight of his full score. Robson was full value once again and his fifteen point total included a number of from-the-back passes of which there were many highlights, although probably the most impressive was in heat eight when he swept through from last place to second to join Richardson. Not to be taken lightly when in this mood, his final outing of the night was also a stunner, passing James Wright in style to join Kauko Nieminen. The Brummies had number one and former Hammers Kasprzak well off colour, clouting the fence in heat one as he drifted wide and failing to trouble the race winners all night. The returning Ulrich Ostergaard performed well over the first few races, winning his first couple of heats before tailing off over the latter half of the meeting. Lakeside Hammers = 63 (104) 1. The Hammers kept their winning run going with three Elite League points against Belle Vue on Friday evening. Operating the “rider replacement” facility for Adam Shields and drafting in guests in the form of Ricky Wells and Ulrich Ostergaard, the home side fought hard to keep the Chris Harris-led Aces at bay. The visiting Mancunian side had riders missing themselves and the absence of Rory Schlein to Grand Prix qualification duty hit them as the Australian is always a lively presence at the Arena-Essex Raceway. Led by paid seventeen points from Piotr Swiderski and fifteen from Lee Richardson, the home side had to wait until heat ten for their first maximum heat advantage but kept their noses in front despite the Aces responding with a maximum of their own in the twelfth race. Harris produced some magic in his last couple of rides, sweeping past Richardson on both occasions, but the Hammers number one teamed up with Swiderski to keep Patrick Hougaard at the back and ensure the full quota of points stayed south. The Lakeside Hammers raced to a rain-curtailed 40-38 victory over Poole Pirates, led by a stunning paid fourteen haul by debutant Kim Nilsson.
Nilsson made a debut to remember, dropping just a single point to visiting maximum man Darcy Ward in heat four to produce an otherwise unblemished first appearance in the colours of the crossed Hammers.
The meeting itself was thrown into doubt part way through when a rain shower appeared during heat six, but the superb efforts of the track staff saw the track pieced back into shape and the meeting quickly resumed and progressed through to the end of heat thirteen.
Poole arrived tracking emerging superstars Chris Holder and Darcy Ward and both were excellent, although Ward held the upper hand in the points stakes with his unbeaten score and produced a couple of forceful from-the-back wins over Piotr Swiderski and Lee Richardson respectively.
A new hero appears to have been unearthed in Nilsson, though, who popped out of the start to win heat two and then produced effective first turns to match in heats eight over compatriot Dennis Andersson and ten over Davey Watt and Jason Doyle. Such was his impression that he was rewarded with an extra ride in the latter and defeated Watt again in heat ten to keep the Hammers six points in front.
The expected 5-1 reverse from the dynamic Holder/Ward pairing in heat thirteen left the home side two points to the good with two heats remaining – but the rain took a further turn for the worse and the meeting was curtailed with the result standing after an ill-fated first running of heat fourteen saw Renat Gafurov excluded for a first turn fall.
The resulting victory for the Hammers saw the Essex men claim two Elite League points to follow the four collected at Birmingham the previous evening.

Speedway’s Russian sensation Emil Sayfutdinov will make his eagerly awaited first ever appearance at the Arena-Essex Raceway this Saturday, 6th August, after he was confirmed in the Coventry team for the fixture that is sure to be a Saturday night sensation as the Hammers switch, for one night only, from their traditional Friday action. Emil has set the Speedway world alight in the last three seasons and has been the most exciting addition to the Elite League in years having joined the Midlands club in an effort to spearhead their charge back into Play Off contention and a retention of their League Title. The Hammers themselves have serious Play Off ambitions and are currently fourth in the table. They are sweating on the fitness of Polish star Piotr Swiderski, who has missed their last two meetings with an ankle injury and they will name their team on Friday to give the rider as much time as possible to recover. The Coventry team for Saturday is: Emil Sayfutdinov (Russia), Rider Replacement for Kenni Larsen (Denmark), Ryan Fisher (USA), Przemyslaw Pawlicki (Poland), Edward Kennett (Great Britain) Nick Morris (Australia) and Travis McGowan (Australia). lakesideweb BEES HEAD FOR LAKESIDECOVENTRY Buildbase Bees face a vital fixture in their bid for a top-four place when they travel to Lakeside on Saturday (8pm). The Bees’ draw at Belle Vue earlier in the week was a thoroughly useful result and they can gain more ground in the play-off race if they can take something at Purfleet, with the Hammers currently holding the fourth position in the Elite League but having completed their away fixtures. The tricky Arena-Essex Raceway is always one of the toughest trips of the season but Bees took great credit from their 45-45 outcome at Kirkmanshulme Lane, a result achieved without No.1 Emil Sayfutdinov who returns to the team for this fixture. It will be another step into the unknown for the Russian, but he showed how quickly he can adapt to new circuits when he won his second ride in the recently-abandoned match at Eastbourne. Bees are forced into one change at the start of a busy week of away matches, with the rider-replacement facility in operation for Kenni Larsen, who is competing in the European Championship semi-final in Poland. Larsen will return for the KO Cup visit to Peterborough on Monday, and then another big Elite League clash at King’s Lynn next Wednesday. Lakeside’s team news is unconfirmed at present, as the Hammers have doubts over Piotr Swiderski with Adam Shields already on the long-term injured list – but Bees will certainly need to be aware of the prolific scoring of their opponents’ recent recruit at reserve, Kim Nilsson. Skipper Edward Kennett said: “It’s a shame we’ll be missing Kenni because he seems to be pretty good on the small tracks, but we’ve got to go with the same attitude we had on Monday and race hard in the first corners, that’s where it’s important. “I’m hoping Emil will adapt to it because he’s probably going to look at it and say ‘this is small!’ but I’ll do what I can to help him out, he will probably need it for this one.” LAKESIDE: To be confirmed BUILDBASE BEES: Emil Sayfutdinov, Kenni Larsen R/R, Ryan Fisher, Przemek Pawlicki, Edward Kennett, Nick Morris, Travis McGowan. beesweb

The Hammers were left reeling after Coventry came from eight points back to snatch victory in the penultimate race.
The Bees were never in front until a 5-1 maximum heat advantage from Edward Kennett and Emil Sayfutdinov in heat thirteen gave them the momentum to wrap up the win. A Przemyslaw Pawlicki and Nick Morris inspired 4-2 duly sewed up the match for the Bees on heat fourteen, leaving the home crowd disappointed. The early exchanges were very favourable as far as the home side were concerned with the Hammers eager to exploit Sayfutdinov’s lack of Arena-Essex experience and the missing Kenni Larsen. Three heat advantages in the opening five races put the Hammers into an eight points lead and seemingly in control. The next three heats began to shape the course of the match, though, as they showed the strengths that the Bees would display on their course to the Elite League points. The first of these was Kennett’s emphatic victory over Richardson in heat six, showing the speed that would see him wrap up a brilliant full maximum in the last race. Although Piotr Swiderski sped past Ryan Fisher at the front of heat seven, the Hammers failed to capitalise as Pawlicki recovered from an awful start to pass Robert Mear. With Kim Nilsson – so good over the past couple of weeks – showing indifferent form on this occasion and spinning off at the start of heat eight, it was left to Fisher to lead a Bees 4-2 and continue the fightback. A star of the Bees resurgence was Morris, who really turned on the style over the latter heats with several points from the back. The first of these came when he powered past Kauko Nieminen in heat nine for another 4-2 with Kennett to close the gap to two. There was a great heat ten for fans to savour as Fisher powered past Ljung and Richardson only for the Hammers’ skipper to repay the compliment with Pawlicki also in the mix. But another vital minor place for Morris – this time over Mear – in the eleventh was followed by a momentum shifting win by the young Aussie in heat twelve over Nieminen and Nilsson which paved the way for the Bees’ strong finish. The only disappointment for the away side was the failure to secure the fourth league point as Sayfutdinov’s debut finished with a retirement in the last race. There was no such problem for Kennett, though, who stormed past Richardson to produce his best ever performance at the Essex track. Lakeside Hammers = 42 1.
The Hammers continued their quest for the Elite League play-offs with this comfortable success over Swindon Robins.
The home side were in determined mood right from the early part of the meeting when both Robert Mear and Kim Nilsson overhauled Sergey Darkin in heat two The win gave Mear the first of three wins as he went on to rack up a superb paid thirteen points haul.
Hammers tracked guests in the form of Cameron Woodward and Davey Watt, with Watt suffering an inauspicious start to proceedings when he crashed out during the first lap of heat four. He soon dusted himself down and recovered, however, to remain otherwise unbeaten for the rest of the meeting.
Despite the relevant comfort of the scoreline, there was plenty of good action for fans to savour: Scott Nicholls rounded Lee Richardson on the final bend of heat one; Richardson and Maciej Janowski passed and re-passed in heat six before the Pole got the edge; whilst Watt produced a superb move to burst into first place and prevent a Robins’ tactical move in heat nine.
It took a Richardson/Swiderski 5-1 over Nicholls to really settle the meeting in favour of the Hammers as far as the full points allocation was concerned and a cracking heat fourteen saw the meeting end on a high as Mear rode a superb first lap to drive past Darkin for the third of his wins.

The Hammers managed to scrape the full quota of Elite Points at stake by seeing off Birmingham in the last heat for three points.
How vital they prove to be in the final reckoning remains to be seen for the Hammers must now sit back and wait for other results to come to see if they qualify for the end of season play-offs. This result, though, saw them complete their 2011 Elite League campaign on a high and move into second place in the table.
