BRUMMIES 44 WOLVERHAMPTON 46
BIRMINGHAM almost pulled off a dramatic opening night win over neighbours Wolves at Perry Barr but suffered a last gasp 46-44 WM Trophy defeat.
Powerful Wolves duo Freddie Lindgren and Peter Karlsson notched a 5-1 in the final heat to secure a visiting victory after the Brummies had dominated much of the meeting.
And Birmingham suffered a crushing blow when key man Claus Vissing crashed out of the meeting with a suspected broken wrist.
Wolves supplied the majority of heat winners but the Perry Barr side were relying on strength in-depth and ran out of steam at the vital moment.
The meeting pulled in a bumper crowd and the second leg takes place at Monmore Green next Monday, March 21.
BIRMINGHAM: Ben Barker 9+1, Krzysztof Kasprzak 7+2, Ales Dryml 7+2, Daniel King 7+2, James Wright 6+2, Claus Vissing 5, Daniel Nermark 3+1.
WOLVERHAMPTON: Fredrik Lindgren 15, Peter Karlsson 12+1, Tai Woffinden 10, Ricky Wells 5, Ludvig Lindgren 2+1, Tyson Burmeister 2, Ty Proctor 0.

BRUMMIES 46 KING'S LYNN 43
BIRMINGHAM got their first win of the new Elite League era with a 46-43 thriller over fellow top flight newcomers King's Lynn at Perry Barr.
And whilst the result wasn't enough to secure the aggregate win in the Elite Elevation Trophy, victory on the night was the most important thing after three straight defeats for the new Brummies team.
Polish star Krzysztof Kasprzak showed exactly why he was recruited to be the new Brummies No.1 with a stunning display.
The World Cup winner suffered mechanical trouble in Heat 1 but was then unbeaten as the Brummies secured a welcome win in a last-heat decider.
Maximum points for Lynn in Heat 12 could have been a major blow, and it cut the gap to a single point, but Kasprzak again performed well to lower the colours of the previously unbeaten Kenneth Bjerre in Heat 13.
Brummies looked set to clinch victory with a 5-1 in Heat 14 but Kevin Wolbert was caught out by Mads Korneliussen on the run to the line – although the German must surely have put himself into boss Graham Drury’s thoughts for Monday’s meeting against Poole in front of the Sky cameras at Perry Barr.
With Lynn surprisingly resting top scorer Bjerre from the last race, matters were a little easier for Kasprzak, and he didn’t disappoint with a rapid start to complete his team’s first win of the new season.
BIRMINGHAM 46: Krzysztof Kasprzak 11+1, Daniel King 10, Daniel Nermark 8, Ales Dryml 7+1, Kevin Wolbert 7, Theo Pijper 2+2, Rene Bach 1.
KING’S LYNN 43: Kenneth Bjerre 11, Sam Masters 8+1, Mads Korneliussen 7+2, Niels-Kristian Iversen 5+1, Olly Allen 5, Filip Sitera 4, Tomas Topinka 3+1.

BRUMMIES 42 POOLE 48
BRAVE Birmingham were edged out 48-42 by title favourites Poole on their return to top flight racing at Perry Barr.
The Brummies, who were promoted during the winter, could so easily have sprung a surprise but Poole had too much strength in-depth.
It was a thrilling night of racing on a well prepared track and the Brummies will rue two falls suffered by Ben Barker which proved costly.
And Brummies got off to a nightmare start with skipper Krzysztof Kasprzak crashing spectacularly out of Heat 1, referee Jim Lawrence ruling that there had been no contact with Russian rider Renat Gafurov who had moved out to mid-track.
Gafurov duly teamed up with Chris Holder to give the Pirates maximum points in the re-run, but the Brummies would not let the visitors pull away, although they dropped further points in Heat 3 when Barker fell on the third bend, quickly clearing the track with partner Daniel King up-front.
Poole completed the win in Heat 14 after Birmingham managed to stay on contention with a gusty display which deserved some consolation.
Birmingham’s next home meeting is against the USA Tourists in a National League standard meeting on Thursday week, April 7.
BIRMINGHAM 42: Krzysztof Kasprzak 11, Daniel King 9, Daniel Nermark 8+2, Kevin Wolbert 7+2, Ales Dryml 3, Dakota North 2+2, Ben Barker 2.
POOLE 48: Chris Holder 13, Jason Doyle 12+1, Dennis Andersson 10+3, Davey Watt 8, Renat Gafurov 4+2, Kyle Newman 1, Darcy Ward r/r.

BRUMMIES SENT TO COVENTRY
BIRMINGHAM have agreed to go to reigning champions Coventry in Elite League action this Friday, April 15.
The two clubs quickly agreed the date after Coventry were finally confirmed as Elite League members last Friday following a long dispute with the sport's authorities.
It means the Brummies face two meetings in as many nights with Lakeside visiting Perry Barr on Thursday.
Manager Graham Drury said: "Sometimes you have to help clubs out and Colin Pratt come onto me from Coventry and said they really needed a fixture on Friday and after speaking to my riders we are happy to go there.
"Plymouth are not riding at Premier League level that night so it means we have Ben Barker available for us so he will be going back to his former club. He'll be desperate to put on a good show for us!"

CLAUS Vissing is on the verge of making a quick return to Birmingham’s Elite League side after making good progress with his wrist injury.
The Dane, widely regarded as a bargain on his low average, crashed on opening night against Wolverhampton and suffered a broken bone in his wrist.
He’s been back to his home country for treatment and was a welcome visitor to Perry Barr for the Bulls meeting with the USA Tourists last week.
Boss Graham Drury said: “Claus is confident he could be back in the saddle within the next fortnight and that will be a welcome boost.
“To lose our key reserve, who could be so vital to our chances of success this season without actually riding a league meeting, was a crushing blow to us but hopefully he can make a good return.
“When we signed him I did make the point that he is much better than his low average suggests and he can play a major part in making Birmingham competitive at this new level we are in.”

BIRMINGHAM pulled off a hard fought win over Swindon in a Perry Barr thriller last night. The visitors kept things close throughout the meeting on a well prepared track which provided some spectacular racing. And it was only fair that Swindon gained a consolation point for their efforts after another hugely enjoyable night of top flight racing. Daniel Nermark gave his best display in Birmingham colours with a brilliant 12-point haul to justify the faith of Brummies bosses Graham Drury and Tony Mole. Going into the last race Swindon were still in with a chance of a draw with a 5-1 but skipper Krzysztof Kasprzak was the last heat hero ahead of Swindon’s top man Scott Nicholls to secure the win. The close scoreline worked in Birmingham’s favour as Swindon were unable to nominate a rider for double points. Heat 13 was the race of the night as Nermark and Nicholls traded places for the lead and it was the Brummies man who came through for the win. Ales Dryml also worked hard for his 7+1 to keep Birmingham ahead in the first half of the meeting and Dudley Heathens star Adam Roynon did well as a guest. Boss Graham Drury said: “We’ve picked up six points in two nights against Swindon and we have to be happy with that. ‘‘They will be a good team when Simon Stead is back from injury. ‘‘From that point of view the timing of our meetings against them is good, but they have just strengthened up and we managed to get the better of them. Hopefully we can build on this and go even further up the table. ‘‘We’ve had a great meeting and I hope the fans enjoyed it.” BIRMINGHAM 48: Daniel Nermark 12, Krzysztof Kasprzak 9, Ales Dryml 7+1, Ben Barker 7+1, Danny King 6, Adam Roynon 5+1, James Wright 4+2 SWINDON 42: Scott Nicholls 14, Nicolai Klindt 11, Maciej Janowksi 9, Jesper B Monberg 5+1, Josh Grajczonek 2, Justin Sedgmen 1, Simon Stead R/R birminghammail

BRUMMIES 52 KINGS LYNN 38BIRMINGHAM pulled off a stunning 52-38 Elite League win over King's Lynn at Perry Barr on Thursday. Czech Republic star Ales Dryml gave his best display in Brummies colours with a 15+3 haul as Birmingham dug deep to secure a vital victory. Maximum points looked very unlikely early on, as they came up against a fast-gating Stars outfit, and visiting riders won four of the first five races. King’s Lynn’s only significant reward, though, was a 4-2 in Heat 3, although the Brummies dodged a major setback in Heat 5 when both Ben Barker and guest Darcy Ward managed to pass Tomas Topinka for second and third places. The visitors still led by two points after Heat 7, but they doubled it with another 4-2 in the next race, Topinka the surprise winner, and with Kenneth Bjerre seemingly in dominant form it looked to be a long way back for the Brummies. But the meeting turned completely with back-to-back Birmingham 5-1s in the next three races, first with Daniel Nermark clamping off Niels-Kristian Iversen in Heat 9 and Barker surging around the outside to join him. Then Mads Korneliussen was neatly moved aside by Dryml in Heat 10, allowing Ward to follow him through and put the Brummies ahead – but what nobody could have forecast was Dryml and Daniel Nermark heading home the previously unstoppable Bjerre in the next race. Dryml was replacing Claus Vissing, who aggravated his wrist injury in a second-ride spill, and although he was edged out by Korneliussen in Heat 12, it meant the Stars couldn’t nominate a rider for double points in the next race. Ward, who displayed stunning speed at times, split Iversen and Bjerre in Heat 13, with Dryml and Barker making the match safe in the penultimate heat. And then Barker combined with Ward to put the icing on the cake as both rode clever first laps in Heat 15 to take advantage of Iversen and the fading Bjerre drifting wide on turn two, rounding off a thoroughly satisfying night for the Brummies. BIRMINGHAM 52: Ales Dryml 15+3, Ben Barker 13+2, Darcy Ward 12+3, Daniel Nermark 11, Kevin Wolbert 1+1, Claus Vissing 0, Daniel King r/r. Dryml looked impressive at no 7 and will ceratinly be a Brummie trump card in this position at Birmingham.

BIRMINGHAM 51 BUILDBASE BEES 39
COVENTRY Buildbase Bees have been left to reflect on a fruitless week of away matches after missing out in an entertaining local derby at Birmingham on Thursday.
Bees had high hopes of taking at least a point from the meeting and were on course for that for much of it, but they faded in the closing stages and went from 32-34 to 36-48 down in the space of just three races.
Much of the damage was done by Coventry asset Ben Barker, now racing for the Brummies, who gave a superb performance for his new club, and he was ably supported by guest duo Rory Schlein and Dennis Andersson.
For Bees, skipper Edward Kennett won three races including a fierce Heat 9 battle with Barker which he took on the line, and there was also an encouraging display from Kenni Larsen with a solid nine-point haul.
But the absences of Hans Andersen (broken foot) and Przemek Pawlicki (concussion) have proved too big a handicap to overcome this week and club bosses will assess the situation with an eight-day break ahead of the next fixture against Lakeside at Brandon on May 20.
Kennett said: “I’m disappointed, I feel we should have taken some points from this meeting and I’m disappointed myself because I had three good rides and then had a disastrous last two. I don’t know what it is, but I need to get out of doing that.
“It’s the second time I’ve been here and it’s a good track. I was pleased to see Kenni going well, but we do need to sort out what’s going on with Hans (Andersen), how long he’s going to be out and see if we can draft a No.1 in.”
BIRMINGHAM 51: Ben Barker 15+1, Rory Schlein 12+1, Dennis Andersson 10+2, Daniel Nermark 9, Ales Dryml 3+1, Claus Vissing 2+1, Daniel King r/r.
BUILDBASE BEES 39: Edward Kennett 10+1, Chris Harris 10, Kenni Larsen 9, Ryan Fisher 4+2, Richard Sweetman 4+1, Nick Morris 2, Przemyslaw Pawlicki r/r.

BRUMMIES 48 COVENTRY 42
BIRMINGHAM made it five successive home victories in the Elite League with a solid all-round effort to defeat Coventry in another terrific contest at Perry Barr.
A huge crowd packed in to witness the appearance of the Bees’ recent signing Emil Sayfutdinov, and the Russian showed exactly why he is such hot property with a 14-point show.
But whilst Sayfutdinov gained good support from Edward Kennett, the Brummies had much greater strength in depth and they recovered well from the shock of conceding a 5-1 in the first race.
A major plus point was the paid-14 haul of reserve Claus Vissing, who was fast and consistent, whilst new skipper Danny King also made an impressive return to his home track after his injury absence.
Brummies led by six points into the closing stages and maintained it when Kennett caused Daniel Nermark to crash in Heat 11, resulting in the Coventry captain’s disqualification, but a 5-1 from Sayfutdinov and Kennett in Heat 13 increased the pressure.
However, King and Vissing combined for a superb 5-1 over Bees guest Ty Proctor in Heat 14 to make match victory safe – and when King and Ben Barker shot away from the start in Heat 15, the Brummies looked set to take all three points from the meeting.
As things turned out, Sayfutdinov and Kennett went past King on the second lap to limit the home side to two, with the Bees taking one, but it was still a magnificent race victory by Barker to head Sayfutdinov over the line.
BIRMINGHAM 48: Claus Vissing 10+4, Ben Barker 10, Daniel King 8+2, Daniel Nermark 8, James Wright 6+2, Krzysztof Kasprzak 6+1, Ales Dryml r/r.
COVENTRY 42: Emil Sayfutdinov 14, Edward Kennett 12+2, Ryan Fisher 7, Ty Proctor 6, Richard Sweetman 3+1, Todd Kurtz 0, Przemek Pawlicki r/r.

The Birmingham Beavers (it's as close as I could get ) waving cheerio to the cup! BRUMMIES 36 LAKESIDE 41BIRMINGHAM face an uphill battle to continue in this season’s Knockout Cup after a rain-curtailed defeat against Lakeside at Perry Barr. The Hammers will take a five-point lead into Friday’s second leg at Purfleet after an impressive performance in a meeting where conditions became difficult after a downpour just after the halfway stage. Brummies suffered an early setback when Krzysztof Kasprzak crashed on the first bend in the first race, and they struggled to contain the fast-starting of Lee Richardson and Piotr Swiderski – who also produced a spectacular dive between Kasprzak and Ulrich Ostergaard in Heat 6. Brummies, who missed the influence of Ben Barker, dropped twelve points behind after Heat 8 and as the rain came down Danny King’s tactical ride was negated by Swiderski’s third win of the night in the next race. Conditions became tougher with race times more than six seconds off usual dry-weather pace, but the home side did gain significant points back in Heat 12 when the returning Ostergaard and Claus Vissing combined for an 8-1 after the Hammers’ Stuart Robson had come to grief. That result shot Ostergaard to the top of the Brummies’ scorechart, but it was also the end of racing for the night as although the rain had stopped the two sets of riders were in agreement that track conditions had become too dangerous to continue. BIRMINGHAM 36: Ulrich Ostergaard 12, Daniel King 9, Daniel Nermark 7+2, Claus Vissing 3+1, James Wright 3, Krzystzof Kasprzak 2+2, Joe Screen r/r. LAKESIDE 41: Lee Richardson 12, Piotr Swiderski 10, Peter Ljung 8, Stuart Robson 5+1, Kauko Nieminen 4+2, Robert Mear 2+1, Adam Shields r/r. brummieweb
