ANGRY residents have started petitions against plans for parking permits in their streets – despite a council survey saying 80 per cent were in favour of the idea. People living in five streets near Peterborough United’s London Road ground are furious at plans by Peterborough City Council to introduce residents’ only parking to alleviate problems on Posh match days.Glebe Road, Fairfield Road, Hadrians Court, Queens Road, Stagshaw Drive, St John’s Road and Gloucester Road would be subject to the scheme, meaning residents must pay £19 a year for a permit – plus extra costs if they want visitors’ permits. The council sent out mailshots to residents, asking for their views and, for the survey in Glebe Road, claimed the response was 80 per cent in favour. However, residents who did not return their form were automatically classed as giving a ‘yes’ vote.
In total, 19 per cent were against, 19 per cent actively voted yes – but 62 per cent did not respond and had their votes classed as in favour of the scheme. “This has nothing to do with the football crowd. I have been here 20 years and it is only three hours every two weeks, most people just put up with it. I think it has been rushed through.” www.peterboroughtoday.co.uk/news/local/petition_against_parking_permits_near_posh_ground_1_705938
