Sheffield star Joe Haines was crowned British Under-21 champion for the second time in his career at Monmore Green on Tuesday (24/4/12)
Haines, a Wolves asset, won the event in 2010 at Lakeside but has since had to fight back from career-threatening injuries after a smash at Aussie track Gillman in December 2010.
He gave a consistent display in an incident-packed meeting, and then managed to avoid some carnage in the semi-final when Kyle Newman and Steve Worrall came to grief.
Haines took his second chance in the re-run, and reached the final along with Kyle Howarth, joining automatic qualifiers Richie Worrall and Tom Perry.
Worrall, who won four of his heat outings, suffered the agony of demolishing the tapes and was excluded.
With the starting gate too badly damaged, the race was started using a bungee cord. Haines made the best jump from gate four and held off a fierce challenge from Perry to secure the title.
He said: “That was so hard, I didn’t really feel fast all night but I came through at the end. From where I’ve come from in the last two years, from the hospital bed to this, I’m over the moon.
“In the semi-final I missed the start by a mile. I was out of it and thought that was it, but luckily it was stopped and I had a bit of fortune, which I had when I won it in 2010.
“I’d like to thank Ty Proctor, my Dad and all my team around me. It was a real team effort, and thanks to everyone who has helped me out heaps this year.”
HEAT SCORES: Richie Worrall 12, Tom Perry 12, Kyle Howarth 11, Joe Haines 11, Steve Worrall 11, Kyle Newman 9, Stefan Nielsen 8, Robert Branford 7, Jerran Hart 7, Jason Garrity 7, Ashley Morris 5, Joe Jacobs 5, Ben Morley 4, Ben Reade (res) 3, Marc Owen 2, Adam Wrathall 1, James Sarjeant 0.
SEMI-FINAL: Haines, Howarth, S Worrall, Newman (f.exc).
FINAL: Haines, Perry, Howarth, R Worrall (exc tapes).

FANS from throughout the UK will head to Peterborough's East of England Showground for the hugely popular Premier League Fours Championship next month.
The eight qualifying clubs are now known for the showpiece event on Sunday, July 15 (2.30). Organisers have made the announcement earlier than usual in order to allow fans to plan their journey for what is traditionally a feast of racing.
Plymouth, Somerset, Workington, Newcastle, Berwick, Leicester, Glasgow and Scunthorpe will all do battle over two semi-finals and the final itself all in the same day.
British Speedway major events co-ordinator David Hoggart said: “We’ve been getting lots of emails from supporters asking about this event because of the travelling involved so we have used May’s averages in June as the cut-off for qualification.
“The meeting starts at 2.30 so wherever people come from they can get to Peterborough and back home in the same day at sensible times.
“This is an event which captures the imagination of fans from throughout the UK and we're looking forward to a festival of racing and an excellent venue.”

THE top four riders from eight clubs will contest the Premier League Fours at Peterborough on Sunday July 15 (2.30pm).
The showpiece event returns to the East of England Showground for a bumper 28-race programme with the teams split into two groups of four for the eight-heat semi-finals, with the top two teams in each group then contesting the twelve-heat Final.
Of this season’s competitors, Workington have dominated the event over recent Premier League history with five wins since 2001, the last of which came in 2009 – whilst Somerset have reached the Final in every year since they won the event in 2005, and Berwick enjoyed one of their greatest days with victory in 2002.
The top four riders for each of the competing teams and the groups are as follows:
GROUP 1 PLYMOUTH: Cory Gathercole, Todd Kurtz, Ryan Fisher, Ben Barker, James Holder (Reserve). NEWCASTLE: Ludvig Lindgren, Claes Nedermark, Stuart Robson, Mark Lemon, Christian Henry (Reserve). BERWICK: Lee Complin, David Bellego, Ricky Ashworth, Sebastian Alden, Alex Edberg (Reserve). REDCAR: Matej Kus, Aaron Summers, Ulrich Ostergaard, Justin Sedgmen, Carl Wilkinson (Reserve).

as of Friday July 06, 2012
Although supporters can pay on the day, Peterborough are once again offering an online facility for advance sales.
Admission prices have been held at last year’s levels – adults £20, concessions £15, children 5-15 years £5, with under-5s free. The magazine programme ‘Tapes Up’ will be available for £4.

3) British championship at Wolverhampton on July 30. CONFIRMATION has been given that this season’s British Semi-Finals will not be re-staged. The meetings last week at Sheffield and Rye House, which were to offer the top seven riders in each progression to the British Final, both fell victim to the unprecedented run of bad weather which has hit the whole of the UK in 2012. With an uncertain forecast over the next couple of weeks and the showpiece Final at Wolverhampton now under three weeks away on July 30, the line-up for that event will now be determined on the basis of riders’ averages. Event organisers have always kept in mind the sporting requirement of giving as many riders as possible the opportunity to participate in the competition – with the national title and a Wild Card place in the British Grand Prix up for grabs. But they have come to the conclusion that it would now be too risky to attempt a re-staging of both semi-finals, and the Final line-up is now expected in the near future. Major events co-ordinator David Hoggart said: “The Management Committee have investigated the feasibility of re-staging the semi-finals, and that also involved assessing the weather forecast for the remainder of the month. “The Met Office have advised us that regrettably the current unstable conditions are likely to continue until around July 23, and therefore we feel the risk of further postponements is too great which would then potentially impact on the Final itself. “We must stress that although Rye House did have a provisional date set aside for a re-staging of their semi-final, this will now not take place. “The line-up for the British Final will therefore be determined by averages, with the top sixteen eligible riders seeded to the event, and this list will be available shortly. “We do regret that we are unable to stage the semi-finals, but the weather has placed us in an unprecedented situation with so many postponements. “Throughout the semi-final process a number of clubs have experienced postponed and re-arranged fixtures of their own, and wherever possible the Management Committee have supported the clubs with those new dates. “This did mean that on occasions riders were transferred from one semi-final to another, but I must stress that as much common sense as possible was applied in those situations. “As far as the British Championship as a whole is concerned, we must also bear in mind we have a commitment to our broadcast partners Sky Sports on July 30, and we fully expect to be in a position to meet that commitment.”BSPA

BRITISH Speedway major events co-ordinator David Hoggart has paid tribute to all involved in a highly successful staging of the Premier League Fours at Peterborough.
Berwick were the surprise but deserving winners of the event, edging out Leicester in a tense struggle in the Final, and there was some high-quality racing at the Showground with track staff working wonders after heavy rain in the preceding days.
Hoggart said: “The quality of racing and the atmosphere here today are testimony to the hard work so many people have put in. I cannot praise the Peterborough promotion enough - they are ahead of their time with the finest of detail taken care of.[/b] “I'm delighted for Berwick, they are very worthy winners and the effort and energy put in by the other seven clubs made for a fantastic day out, which is what the Fours is all about.” The Bandits last won the Fours in 2002, and their victorious quartet – Sebastian Alden, Ricky Ashworth, Lee Complin and David Bellego, joined by reserve Alex Edberg – were understandably elated with their day’s work. Ashworth said: “Peterborough is the home of meetings like this, and the race-track was a joy to race on. I think this is where the Fours should be forever!“We’ve come here today off the back of a bad result, and I think that’s what me and Josh (Auty) did when we won the Pairs (with Sheffield). The pressure was off us, nobody was really expecting us to do anything, so to go and win the group and then lead pretty much from the start of the Final was fantastic. “The Berwick fans haven’t had much to shout about this year but they show such commitment following us around and it’s great that we can do this for them. We needed a lift in the camp, and I think this has done it.” bspa

GREAT Britian boss Neil Middleditch says the race for the national title at Wolverhampton on Monday promises to be an open battle. GB’s riders from the recent World Cup will be in direct competition in the British Final, but there are several others looking to challenge for the title and the Wild Card place for the British Grand Prix. Middleditch said: “It’s a difficult one to call. Normally there are just a few riders who can realistically win, but this year there’s a number who can be British Champion – so it should be a great competition with some really competitive action on track. “This is the big one as far as our British speedway riders are concerned. It’s the one all of them want, young and old. To have British Champion on your CV is not a bad thing to have, and it’s certainly not taken lightly.” - 20 years ago maybe main text bspa
