Gayle, who had only made 18 League Two appearances before joining Peterborough, has formed a productive forward partnership with Lee Tomlin.
The pair have started the last six games together and helped Posh to victories in their last three matches, including Boxing Day's impressive 3-0 win at Wolves.
"The last four or five games Lee has played the best he has under me," said Ferguson.
"He enjoys playing with Dwight, there's no question about that. You always like to get partnerships. It was a lot of money on Dwight but it's well spent by the chairman."

That's the key point for me. Tomlin plays better in the Peter Beardsley role and if we're looking for him to be the Gary Lineker (which Gayle is) then we're in the plop! Recent results prove the point!

Early career
Gayle was born in Walthamstow, London. He started his career in the Arsenal F.C. Academy of Arsenal but was released as a teenager. In 2009 he joined Stansted, where he went on to score 57 goals in the 2010–11 season.
Dagenham & Redbridge In the summer of 2011 he signed for Football League Two side Dagenham & Redbridge. In August 2011, he was immediately sent out on loan to Conference North side Bishop's Stortford on a season-long loan. He then signed his professional contract in July 2012, on a three-year contract after scoring 29 goals in 42 appearances for Bishop's Stortford.[7] He made his professional debut for the Daggers on 18 August 2012, in a 2–0 defeat to Cheltenham Town.
Peterborough United In November 2012 Gayle joined Peterborough United on loan with Peterborough having the option of making his move permanent in January 2013. His Peterborough debut came on 24 November as a 53rd-minute substitute for Saido Berahino in a 1–1 away draw with Ipswich Town. Gayle's first Peterborough goal was on 1 December 2012. Picking-up a poor backpass by Blackpool's Alex Baptiste he scored what was only a consolation goal in Peterborough's 4–1 home defeat. Peterborough manager Darren Ferguson said of Gayle "He listens. He picks up things quickly, which is always a sign of a good player. He's going to be a really good player the boy".
On 24 December 2012, he agreed to sign permanently for Peterborough after a successful loan spell scoring five goals in six games. He joined on 2 January 2013 on a four-and-a-half-year contract for a fee of £500,000 which could rise to £750,000. On 2 March 2013, he scored a hat-trick in a 3–2 win against Blackburn Rovers.
Crystal Palace On 3 July 2013, Gayle signed a four-year contract for newly promoted Premier League club Crystal Palace for an undisclosed fee, reported as a club record £4.5m, inheriting the number 16 shirt from Wilfried Zaha. His former club Dagenham & Redbridge received £1 million of the initial transfer fee plus 20% of any extra payments made due to a sell-on clause added when he signed for Peterborough United. He made his Palace debut playing 90 minutes in a home match against Tottenham Hotspur on 18 August 2013 in a 0–1 loss. On 31 August 2013, Gayle scored his first goal for the club and his first in the Premier League by successfully converting a penalty against Sunderland after he was fouled by John O'Shea.[18] On 5 October, he scored in a 3–1 defeat against Liverpool at Anfield. On boxing day, he scored the only goal in a 1–0 away win against Aston Villa at the end of the game in added time although, in part due to injury, he found first team appearance opportunities limited for the remainder of the season. He returned towards the end of the season scoring two goals in a come back to 3–3 (Palace having been 0–3 down) in a home draw against Liverpool, which effectively ended their chances of the League title. In Palace's final match of the season against Fulham at Craven Cottage he scored another two goals, including a direct free-kick. These goals against Fulham ensured he finished his first season at Crystal Palace as the club's top scorer despite struggling to hold down a consistent place in the starting eleven.
On 26 August 2014, Gayle scored his first hat-trick for Crystal Palace, scoring three times in the first-half to give Palace a 3–0 win over Walsall in the second round of the Football League Cup. Four days later, he scored his first Premier League goal of the season in the opening minute of a 3–3 draw at Newcastle United. On 23 November, Gayle scored in the home fixture against Liverpool for the second consecutive season as Palace defeated the Merseyside team 3–1. On 4 January, Gayle scored his first goal of 2015 in a 4–0 win over Dover Athletic in the third round of the FA Cup. He then scored three goals in the team's next two matches; a 2–1 home win over Tottenham Hotspur and a 3–2 defeat of Burnley at Turf Moor. Gayle ended the season as top scorer in all competitions for Crystal Palace, despite, like the season before, struggling to hold down a consistent place in the starting eleven.
On 11 August 2015, Bristol City manager Steve Cotterill confirmed that Crystal Palace had accepted an undisclosed bid for Gayle. On 15 August, the transfer broke down as it was confirmed that Bristol City were no longer interested in signing Gayle. Gayle failed to hold down a regular first-team place, due to a series of injuries throughout the season. On 12 April 2016, Gayle signed a contract with Crystal Palace to keep him at the club until 2019. On 7 May 2016, the penultimate game of the season, Gayle scored two goals in a 2–1 over Stoke City to confirm Crystal Palace's safety in the Premier League. For the third season in a row Gayle, despite being unable to hold down a consistent place in the team, finished the season as top scorer in all competitions for Crystal Palace.
Newcastle United
On 1 July 2016, it was confirmed that Gayle had sealed a move to Newcastle United, having completed a successful medical at the North East club.
Rafael Benitez's aura as a manager helped to convince striker Dwight Gayle to drop a division and join Newcastle United from Crystal Palace.
Gayle, 25, moved to St James Park for a reported fee of about £10m, swapping the Premier League for the Championship in the process.
Former Real Madrid and Liverpool boss Benitez opted to stay at Newcastle despite relegation last season.
"He is a great manager and has great experience," Gayle told BBC Newcastle.
"There's expectation, but under the manager here I believe he can help me to perform.
"There's a great history at Newcastle - I'm looking forward to getting this club back in the Premier League and proving a few people wrong."
During three seasons at Palace, he scored 26 goals in 74 games following a £6m move from Peterborough.
The journey from Arsenal's academy to non-league football with Stansted right through to scoring goals in the Premier League at Palace echoes the progression of England forward Jamie Vardy.
Newcastle appealed as the next step in his career, with the influence of Palace boss Alan Pardew - a former Newcastle manager himself - strengthening his decision.
Palace's fan 'ultras' have created a pumped-up atmosphere with chanting and banners within the capacity constraints of Selhurst Park, but the size of the attendances and scale of the stadium are incomparable to that of St James Park.
"There was other interest but the opportunity of playing at Newcastle in front of 50,000 is a great one," Gayle added.
"It's great for a player to have the support behind them, it gives you that extra strength. It was the best thing for me in my career."

Well with Newcastle United hot favourites for the Championship it stands to reason that 9 or 8/1 for Gayle to be the league's top scorer (Coral was 10/1 when I looked this morning) is a decent bet. Assuming that he's first pick of course, but for £10m he's going to be surely?

I'm going to regret not being a hardened gambler, although my overall finances suggest different £50 or £100 here would have been a good bet over the season but I get a nosebleed betting £10 Four in four for Gayle - just how well is Newcastle’s new No 9 settling into the shirt? (chroniclelive.co.uk/football-news/bristol-city-0-1-newcastle-Aug 20 2016)Newcastle United recorded their first away win under Rafa Benitez - and their first in eight long months - as a Dwight Gayle strike earned the Magpies a hard-fought 1-0 victory at Ashton Gate. Some Newcastle supporters questioned the decision to hand Gayle the No 9 shirt ahead of Aleksandar Mitrovic, but the £10million summer signing has really found his goalscoring boots over the past week. A missed penalty against Huddersfield Town was rectified immediately as he headed in the rebound, then Gayle netted a brace against Reading in midweek. At Ashton Gate, the 25-year-old got himself in behind the Bristol City defence, controlled a lovely Diame through-ball and then slotted the ball past Richard O’Donnell right in front of the travelling Toon Army. It was a real striker’s finish - and the United fans celebrated wildly alongside their new No 9. He was so unlucky not to add a second in the 71st minute as well, wonderfully turning on the edge of the box before rattling the outside of the post with a shot. The iconic shirt certainly doesn’t seem to be wearing heavy on Gayle’s shoulders...

Assuming that he's first pick of course, but for £10m he's going to be surely? Well Newcastle go to the top of the table and Gayle is top goalscorer by 3. Unless he gets a long term injury this is one bet that's certain to come in. You can't say that too often.

Gayle double last night v Forest moves him 4 clear at the head of the Championship top goal scorers, making the pre season bet look more and more like printing money? If only I'd listened to my own suggestion bang-head-on-wall
