Grand Prix star Niels-Kristian Iversen made a strong start to his Danish Championship defence after winning the first round in Slangerup on Friday evening. The King’s Lynn rider racked up 12 points to top the heat scorechart, before taking the chequered flag in the final to carry 15 points into the decider at Holsted on August 30.
Nicolai Klindt defied a nightmare start to the year to qualify for the final on 10 points and finish second to top that up to 12. Peter Kildemand bagged 11 in the heats and was third in the final, ending on 12. Kenneth Bjerre tallied 10, but was unable to add to that after finishing last in the medal race. While the final line-up was decided on countback, the battle for the nation’s four SGP qualifying quarter final berths went to a marathon five-rider, four-race run-off. Iversen was granted Denmark’s wild card for the SGP qualification semi-final in his home town Esbjerg on June 22, while Peter Kildemand secured one of the quarter final spots at Austrian circuit St Johann or Hungarian track Debrecen on 11 points. But Klindt, Bjerre, Michael Jepsen Jensen and Kenni Larsen all tied on 10. Larsen defeated MJJ and Klindt in the first run-off to earn a place in the decider, while Bjerre beat Andersen to join him. Andersen and MJJ then headed Klindt in the third run-off, which saw the Peterborough man knocked out of the running. Bjerre, who was only called up for the meeting on Thursday after eight-time champion Nicki Pedersen withdrew, then proved his hunger to get back in the big time by battling to a sensational win on his 29th birthday ahead of Jepsen Jensen and Andersen, who join him in the qualifiers. Larsen missed out.
