Bad news for the oik:
Grand Prix star Darcy Ward admits he is considering teaming up with fellow Aussie international Nick Morris and hitting the road in search of Australian Championship glory.
The 21-year-old has not competed in the series since 2011 and the nearest round to his base near Brisbane is the opening event at New South Wales circuit Kurri Kurri on January 4.
Even for an SGP regular, the cost of racing in the three-round championship, which also visits Victorian track Undera on January 8 and Adelaide venue Gillman on January 11, would be very steep.
But Ward would love to take on the likes of defending champion Troy Batchelor and 2012 world champion Chris Holder, who is considering making a return to action in the series if he overcomes his injuries.
And the Queenslander admits joining forces with Morris to make the marathon trip across the country may just make battling for Aussie gold a bit more viable.
He said: “I haven’t decided that I’ll ride, but I might team up with Nick. For me and him, the closest track is 12 hours, so it’s a bit of a hike for us.
“But in a good sense, we’re looking at it as a road trip and it could be a lot of fun. We’re good mates. That’s our holiday time, so if we can make a road trip out of it, it will be enjoyable for both of us. I could be Australian champ maybe …”
