Not great preparation to wash your dirty linen so graphically in public:
Peterborough United chairman Darragh MacAnthony and manager Darren Ferguson had some strong words to say to their players following a fifth straight League One defeat at Brentford. Posh conceded two goals in the final 10 minutes to slip to a 3-2 defeat. They also dropped two places to fifth in the League One table and are now 10 points off an automatic promotion place.
MacAnthony’s reaction was to admit his patience was wearing thin with his players. He described some of the Posh defending as ‘clown-like’ and insisted his players need to start acting like men to arrest the team’s slump. Ferguson, who was generally happy with his team’s display, accused star man Lee Tomlin of being on a ‘self-destruct mission’ and criticised top scorer Britt Assombalonga for picking up a ‘ridiculous’ fifth caution of the season which will mean he misses Saturday’s (November 30) visit of title favourites Wolves to London Road. “Our discipline has been rubbish this season,” Ferguson admitted. “Lee Tomlin could well have been sent off tonight (for kicking out) and he appears to be on a self-destruct mission, while Britt has picked up a ridiculous and needless booking which means he can’t play in the next game. “My three-year-old behaves better than some of my players and it’s something we need to sort out quickly.”
MacAnthony used his Twitter account to vent his frustrations. He said: “Honest opinion after watching my team lose fifth game in a row: Played well enough, but for calamity clown-like defending from experienced defenders which isn’t good enough and against a side you knew would bombard us with crosses. “It’s not rocket science to be fair. Plus it also doesn’t help when you have certain strikers spend their life playing around the half-way line when they should be in the box. “My patience is wearing thin with this pathetic run. Our players need to grow some cajones and stop talking a good game, then choking. Go and perform like men.”
Ferguson said: “You couldn’t have seen this run coming five games ago, (Oh I think we could ) but it is what it is and we have to deal with it. If we lose to Wolves on Saturday we will be 14 points behind them and there is no chance we would be able to make that gap up. “That’s how important that game is.”
