David Hoggart has revealed how the deal to take over Sheffield Tigers went down to the wire.
Hoggart is fronting a new consortium of business people who have agreed to take control of the club from outgoing owner Neil Machin.
And although the identity of the investors is under wraps for now, Hoggart assures supporters the club is in good hands.
The club co-promoter said: “We had a deadline to meet before agreeing with Neil and we went very close to missing it but we were so close we kept going.
“It could have collapsed and I’m not sure what would have happened then, but we got there in the end and Sheffield fans can celebrate the fact the sport will continue at Owlerton.
“We have notified the stadium and the British Speedway Promoters’ Association and obviously it is good news that we will be racing in the 2014 Premier League. Beyond that, the consortium are not against taking the club to a higher level.
“The club is in good hands. We have speedway experience, accountancy experience and general business experience on board and once the legal documents are signed then more details will be revealed.
“I must pay tribute to Neil Machin. What that man has done for Sheffield Speedway over two decades is remarkable and in many ways it’s a sad day to see him leave.
“I have worked with him since 1998 when I was a sponsor and everything I have learnt on the promotional side is down to him. I will never lose sight of that fact.
“Neil will always be welcome at Owlerton on a Thursday night and we look forward to seeing him during the course of the season. He is always on the end of a telephone should I need any help or advice.”
