I just thought that you had it or you didn't & it was about reaction more than anything? It'll be interesting to see if the science works?
Chris Harris’ SGP manager Phil Morris admits he has been studying the sport’s fast starters as he bids to get the Cornishman trapping in 2014.
Bomber is back in the FIM Speedway Grand Prix series after a year’s absence and is working to regain the form which carried him to sixth place in the 2010 World Championship.
Harris has built an unwelcome reputation for being a sluggish starter during his career. But he is also one of the world’s most exciting racers and Morris is determined to make his job far easier this season.
He has watched videos of the sport’s fastest gaters in a bid to give the Coventry racer a few tips and help him fight his way back into world’s top eight.
Morris said: “I have done an extensive study and research on the top gaters in the world – what they do and how they do it. I sat there and analysed starts. There is a common denominator in some of them. I’ll pass that across to Bomber and let him know the things the top gaters are doing.
“I remember someone asked Todd Wiltshire why he was such a good gater. He studied Hans Nielsen, who was probably the best starter in his time. I’m trying to do the same to help Bomber.
“Changing a starting technique is not an easy thing to do. You get stuck in your ways and I know that as a rider. It’s very difficult but sometimes you have to give things a try – if you don’t try, you’ll never know. If it works, that’s brilliant. If it doesn’t, I don’t think Chris has lost anything by trying.”
Morris admits plenty of ingredients make up a successful start. He said: “It’s about technique more than anything.
“There are lots of things like body positioning, leg positioning, throttle arm positioning, head positioning – lots of different things happen with the body when the clutch is dropped. It all determines how much the bike launches. Clutch control is crucial.
“Believe it or not, I looked at about 16 different facets and I studied lots of riders. I spent hours and hours doing it. It’s something that might not work with Chris, but it’s only going to help I think. It’s worth trying
