Great Britain star Tai Woffinden starts his World Championship defence at Western Springs NZ on April 5. Woffinden faces stiff competition with 14 of the sport’s finest riders hoping to relieve him of his title. Winner of last year’s NZ GP, Jaroslaw Hampel, will be chasing back-to-back victories in Auckland. Danish stars Niels-Kristian Iversen and Nicki Pedersen will fancy their chances of winning the first round of the 2014 series, as will American Greg Hancock. Australian stars Chris Holder and Darcy Ward would like to become the first men from Down Under to win a Grand Prix in the Southern Hemisphere. Russia's Emil Sayfutdinov will be hoping to bounce back from the elbow and knee ligament injuries which halted his 2013 World Championship title charge.

Great entertainment when more lines opened up (Sounds like EOES). Was going to bet on NP but forgot I needed to get on Friday night - regretting it until an unknown German saved the day. Sounds like last NZ GP - shame as done a good job from afar.

I agree it was excellent entertainment.
Smolinski certainly surprised me but I doubt he will keep that standard all season.

A mixture of an excellent circuit and quality riders, sounds like what the EoES used to be before the BSPA started their race to the bottom, or Eastbourne, Belle Vue & Lakeside as it is known in the trade?

Certainly brought home to me what we are missing!!!! Brings home what the EL is missing. That isn't what you get in the EL - only 1 rider in the top 8 rides in our top tier.

You are of course quite right. To me what we watch now is a million miles from the Speedway I recall. I blame BSPA some may feel that they have done what they have done to preserve Speedway at some level others including me feel that they should have grasped the nettle and come up with a radical plan. What they have done however is drive anybody with any money or ambition out of the sport.

They had a real opportunity with the GP's and Sky but missed it.

Or to put it another way, half of the field does ride in the EL, including the current World Champ, World no.2 and this year's favourite for the title. However, I agree that speedway is now a busted flush. I've always been against a fixed night and less fixtures but think that's the only way to make the Elite league true to it's name once again. Tracks can then run Prem or NL on other night if they wish.
