I haven't noticed the smell for as long as I can remember. The smell of Castrol R was always there when I first started but I don't get it now.
The one thing that I did notice on Friday (my first meeting, but again on Eurosport last night) was how much like sewing machines the modern day speedway bikes sound.
I remember someone a couple of years ago (when the then new silencers were introduced) saying that they'd be the death of speedway. When I actually attended my first meeting during that season I couldn't belive how naff they sounded.
I think that we adjust to the noise (much like has happened with the non screaming F1 cars) but the sport has been sanitised in favour of the NIMBYs and environmental lobby IMO who can't cope with a couple of hours seasonal noise?

You're banging on my drum now! I can see the "need" for silencers, although They have definitely taken much away from the experience, and, while perhaps saving a few tracks in residential areas could jeopardize the appeal of the entire sport! Even without silencers I suspect the modern, revvy engines would not sound as good as the old JAPs. As for the smell, why has it gone? I know modern engines no longer have total loss oil systems, but if the oil is discarded every couple of races anyway, what's the gain? A teaspoonful of Castrol R in the fuel tank could work wonders!

When I read that people are looking forward to the season and a return to the noise and the smell, I just don't get it. I can only assume that they never experienced a straight through exhaust or one of the early less effective silencers? Noise and smell these days is as alien as atmosphere and crowd in the modern day! I think that the modern day engines are so temperamental that they would probably pull a sicky with an unexpected fuel additive.

You're right. I introduced my kids to speedway at Peterborough in 1980 and it was so different to the sport I watched at Hackney only ten years before. The JAPs had gone in favour of Weslakes, silencers and rear wheel spoilers had appeared from nowhere and the smell had all but gone. It was still enjoyable but the noise and atmosphere had started on the slippery slope to where we are today. I watched an old Hackney video on you tube a few weeks ago, and, even as a recording the noise stirred fond memories!
