The Monster Energy FIM Speedway World Cup Race Off and Final are back in Great Britain for the first time in a decade as Belle Vue’s brand new National Speedway Stadium in Manchester hosts the action on July 29 and 30.
Team speedway’s biggest meetings have not taken place in Great Britain since Reading staged the 2006 Race Off and Final – the last time the Lions appeared on the SWC rostrum, finishing third.
Double individual world champion Tai Woffinden, 2006 SWC bronze medal winner Chris Harris and their team mates have a golden opportunity to end their podium hoodoo, as they are automatically seeded into the Final as host nation. They face the winners of Events 1 and 2 and the Race Off victors.
In a change for 2016, the Race Off – featuring the second and third-placed teams from Events 1 and 2 – takes place on the Friday night. This offers fans a terrific two meetings in 24 hours in a city steeped in speedway history.
BSI Speedway managing director Torben Olsen said: “It’s fantastic to be bringing two of the biggest meetings in the speedway calendar back to Great Britain.
“Belle Vue have made no secret of their ambitions to create a venue Britain and Manchester can be proud of, and one that can stage the sport’s top events.
“The Monster Energy SWC Race Off and Final are two of the most exciting and fiercely-contested meetings on the speedway calendar, and I’m sure the likes of Tai Woffinden and Chris Harris will be determined to make it a weekend to remember for the home fans.”
Belle Vue chief executive officer David Gordon said: “Bringing the Monster Energy SWC Race Off and Final to the National Speedway Stadium is a credit to everyone who has worked tirelessly to bring the project to fruition.
“The Belle Vue Aces are one of the world’s most iconic and historic clubs and it’s fitting that two of the sport’s biggest meetings should take place here in Manchester – a city with a famous speedway and sporting pedigree.
“We hope big meetings will become synonymous with Belle Vue in the years to come and we look forward to welcoming speedway fans from across the world to the National Speedway Stadium in July.”
Sir Richard Leese, Leader of Manchester City Council, said: “Attracting international races that bring the world’s spotlight on both the new National Speedway Stadium and Belle Vue Aces has been the ambition for the project from the beginning.
“The growing popularity of the sport will only be boosted even more when the world cup arrives next summer, and I hope the club can exploit that enthusiasm, encourage new riders to take to the sport and help them benefit from the excellent facilities at the Belle Vue Sports Village.”
