Polish No.1 Maciej Janowski believes 2016 will be a vintage year for the FIM Speedway Grand Prix series, as Poland’s new generation bid to make their mark on the world stage.
Along with wild card Jaroslaw Hampel, Janowski is joined in the SGP elite by GP Challenge top two Bartosz Zmarzlik and Piotr Pawlicki.
Both youngsters have lifted the FIM Speedway Under-21 World Championship and have proved their class in Europe’s top leagues.
Janowski sees no reason why they can’t take their scoring on to the SGP stage and is excited about a strong line-up for the 2016 World Championship.
He said: “There are a lot of good young riders in Poland – there’s a new generation coming. A lot of the young riders are really good technically, like Bartek and Piotr.
“They’re really quick and they have everything to prove they’re in the right position.
"They’re both racing in the GP because they proved themselves this season with the big scores they managed, how they rode and everything.
“I really enjoy being in the Grand Prix and I think this will be a really strong year for the series.
"I think we will see a lot of really good racing. When you look at the line-up for next year, every heat will be really interesting.
“I can’t wait. I’m preparing and thinking about what I can do better to be a better rider.”
All four of Poland’s SGP newcomers have what it takes to secure at least a place in the World Championship’s top eight.
But asked whether he felt the Polish quartet could take half of the automatic qualification berths on offer for 2017, Janowski admitted he’ll be focused on his own fortunes.
He said: “I’m pretty sure we can all finish in the top eight. It’s hard to say now because we’ve just finished the last season and we’re all preparing.
“But I never think about things like this. I always focus on myself. These are individual meetings. There are so many things in your own head, without having to think about your rival.
“We all race for one thing – to win. Of course we respect each other. We race hard, but with respect. It will be good and I’m 100 percent sure it will be a good season for the Grand Prix.”
Janowski goes into 2016 as Polish No.1 after winning his first national title and finishing seventh in the SGP series.
There’s no doubt he’s winning legions of fans in his homeland. And Janowski was elated to win more and more friends around the world as his FIM Speedway Grand Prix debut season progressed.
He said: “I met a lot of lovely and good people at the stadium throughout the whole of Europe, and there were a lot of people supporting me in Melbourne. That was sick; I would have never thought about getting all this.
“I’ve always had some fans, but it has never been international, I don’t think. Now I have a lot of people supporting me from England and a lot of different countries. That’s pretty cool, when you’re racing, you win something and people support you. It’s a really cool thing.”
