Polish shooting star Maksym Drabik made a spectacular start to his FIM Speedway Under-21 World Championship defence after overhauling Robert Lambert to win round one in Daugavpils on Friday.
The Wroclaw racer was out-trapped by the Brit in the final, but fought furiously to find some pace around the outside, before sweeping around the King’s Lynn man for victory on the penultimate turn.
Leszno rider Bartosz Smektala snatched third place from Latvian hotshot Oleg Mihailovs on the line at the climax of an epic four laps.
Drabik topped the heat scorechart on 14 points, before adding to that with victory in his semi and final to end on 20.
Lambert bagged four race wins – inflicting Drabik’s sole loss of the heat races. But a third place cost him top spot as he finished on 13, before recording seconds in the semis and final to tally 17.
Smektala matched the British champion’s total of 13 in the heats, before winning his semi and picking up a point in the final to also record 17.
Mihailovs proved his class on home shale with a terrific 12 – a total matched by Poland’s Dominik Kubera.
Danish rider Frederik Jakobsen, who was unveiled as a Poole Pirates star today, also hit double figures, finishing on 11. Daniel Kaczmarek made the semis on eight, while Patrick Hansen qualified on countback with seven – pipping Andreas Lyager and Dan Bewley.
The next round takes place at Leszno on Sunday, July 22 – the day after the Adrian Flux British SGP in Cardiff.
