Posh chairman Darragh MacAnthony went into bat for six promotion contenders at the Friday 15th May crunch meeting. The clubs will reconvene on Monday (May 18).
League Two clubs did vote to end their season today with a straight points per game average used to determine final placings. Play-offs would take place as normal. League Two clubs have asked that no club is relegated to the National League. The moves still need to be ratified by the EFL and the FA.
An EFL statement issued after the meeting read: “There were varied views shared in League One and it was determined that there would be a further period of reflection and consultation to understand what creative solutions could be implemented. It was acknowledged that the need to find innovative and creative solutions was of paramount importance as was the need for decisions to be taken quickly.”
A straight points per game formula would be bad for Posh. They would drop out of the play-offs to be replaced by Wycombe.
Weighted points-per-game uses home and away form to reach a final points tally and if used in League One Posh would move up from sixth to fifth and face fourth-placed Fleetwood in the play-offs.
Current top two Coventry and Rotherham would be promoted automatically with Wycombe moving up from eighth to sixth to contest a play-off semi-final against third-placed Oxford. Portsmouth would drop from fifth to seventh and miss out on the play-offs.
MacAnthony was the spokesman for Oxford, Portsmouth, Fleetwood, Sunderland and Ipswich as well as Posh today. All want the 2019-20 season to be played out in full.
Championship clubs met earlier this week and voted to try and complete the season as normal.

The EFL Board have finally released details from their meeting yesterday (May 20) and, although they insist completing the season is their preferred option, they are giving each division the chance to vote for an early curtailment.
Adding extra teams to conventional play-offs has been ruled out.
It’s thought there is a small majority in League One who favour curtailment. If that is voted through an unweighted points-per-game average will determine final placings and that will knock Posh out of the play-off positions.
The EFL statement said: ‘The EFL Board met yesterday to consider the feedback and subsequent implications of last week’s divisional Club meetings, as the League continues to address the many complex financial and operational matters resulting out of the COVID-19 crisis, including how the 2019/20 campaign is concluded.
‘The various proposals and counter proposals received from clubs have been reviewed and, as a result, the Board has finalised the draft framework that would be adopted into EFL Regulations, in the event that a division is to make the decision to curtail its season as League Two indicated last Friday.
‘Clubs are now required to give the matter further consideration, before the Board formally proposes the appropriate Regulation changes, which will then be voted on by all clubs.
‘The recommended framework is as follows:
‘1. Resuming the 2019/20 season with the existing format remains the most appropriate course of action from a sporting integrity perspective, but the Board accepts there are circumstances that may lead to curtailment (as has been demonstrated with League Two) or a situation subsequently transpires whereby the season is unable to conclude.
2. This means that, in the event of an early curtailment:
a. Final divisional placings should be determined on unweighted points per game (if required).
b. Promotion and relegation should be retained.
c. Play-offs should be played in all circumstances but should not be extended (beyond four teams).
3. If a scenario arises whereby the play-offs cannot be played, the EFL Board will determine the appropriate course of action.
4. The Board considers that the majority required to curtail the 2019/20 season in any division should be 51%. Determining whether or not to curtail the season is a decision for each division to take.
5. The principle of relegation across all three divisions is integral to the integrity of the pyramid, from the Premier League down to the National League, provided we have assurances that the National League will start season 2020/21 (i.e. the relegated Club in League Two has somewhere to play).
6. Any regulatory solution should be relevant and specific to the current challenges posed by the COVID-19 outbreak and reach a conclusion that is clear and effective with the impact and justifications easy for all stakeholders to understand.
EFL Chairman Rick Parry, said: “In the event that a divisional decision is made to curtail the 2019/20 season, the EFL Board is recommending that the League adopts the original framework with the amendments as identified, as there is a strong desire to remain as faithful as possible to the regulations and ensure there is consistency in the approach adopted across the EFL in all divisions.
“The Board has always acknowledged that a single solution to satisfy all clubs would always be hard to find, but we are at the point now where strong, definitive action is need for the good of the League and its members.”

The 2019-20 League One season was predictably curtailed this afternoon and a points-per-game average applied to determine final positions.Posh finish the shortened season in seventh place and miss out on the play-offs. It’s understood clubs voted 19-4 against continuing the season with only Posh, Sunderland, Ipswich and Tranmere voting to carry on. “The EFL have been a disgrace throughout this process,” Fry said. “Just last week they arranged for four clubs they knew were going to be in the play-offs to be tested for coronavirus. They did this before today’s vote and those clubs had returned to training before today’s vote. How on earth can that be right? What on earth was the point of today’s vote when the EFL knew what the result would be? “The whole thing has been a farce, They’ve not taken into account home form or the fixtures teams had left. They’ve promoted teams and put teams into the play-offs in a very dubious way. “If this is what they wanted, why didn’t they just say so instead of letting it drag out unnecessarily? I’m astonished they have let this play out as they have. “We’ve been cheated. I feel so sorry for the chairman, the board, the manager and especially the fans. We set our stall out to win promotion this season and we felt we still had a great chance to achieve it.” Posh co-owners Darragh MacAnthony and Dr Jason Neale represented Posh at today’s virtual meeting. MacAnthony is booked to appear on Sky Sports at 9am tomorrow (June 10).ET Darragh MacAnthony@DMAC102 (4:14 PM · Jun 9, 2020)The state of my timeline full of fans loving the fact that 18 'football clubs' voted to not play football & the ramifications of it. What a weird situation we find our selves in regarding football in general and the promotion and relegation issues in the various leagues. Two of my favorite teams Brentford and Wealdstone were on the cusp of achieving promotion to higher leagues . Brentford to a level not seen since immediate post war and Wealdstone to a position they should still be in had it not been for (dodgy dealings" which are still in dispute. Understand totally that those clubs who could be relegated feel that they may well have extricated themselves had season continued , but equally feel for teams as above who are likely to have their dreams and ambitions taken away. Wealdstone have been promoted, hope Brentford follow. (Ryecraft Coote Anthony Higginson Scott Crowe Block Brooks McAdams Dick McCleod)
