Danish star Niels-Kristian Iversen’s woeful run of injuries continues after it was confirmed he broke his shoulder blade in two places in Tarnow on Monday.
The fractures come as a cruel blow to a man whose 2020 season was destroyed by crashes, which cost him his FIM Speedway Grand Prix spot.
The Dane tumbled on his Tarnow debut at home to Polish First Division rivals Gdansk.
Iversen fought furiously with Jakub Jamrog for second place in heat one, with the Gdansk man just making it around him on the run to the line. But the pair tangled after the chequered flag and ended up in the first-bend fence.
Jamrog continued in the meeting, but Iversen was in some pain and withdrew from the action, with his side losing the contest 55-35.
A post on Tarnow’s official website confirmed: “After the fall, the competitor complained of pain in his shoulder and was no longer able to continue the competition. After detailed research in a hospital in Tarnow, it turned out that the Unia Tarnow rider had broken his shoulder blade in two places. Now the Dane has a few weeks' break in starts.”
The seven-time Danish champion has a history of similar injuries. His season was ended by a broken shoulder in 2017, with the after-effects continuing into the following year.
He also suffered shoulder problems in a crash with Bartosz Zmarzlik in pre-season last year, which kept him out of Gorzow’s early fixtures.
The news comes as a huge setback to Tarnow, who made Iversen the First Division’s star signing this winter as they battle for PGE Ekstraliga promotion.
