Patrick O'Flynn@oflynnsocial 2/6/21
Knee-taking booed at the Riverside (some also applauded). Nice and divisive way to start an England game.
Given up on football until they just get on with the game.
If they do it at Wembley in the Euros, as the “load of old farts at the FA” (Harry Redknapp) seem to indicate then that could be quite embarrassing, not that I intend to watch them anyway.

Same old England, so bloody boring. Last nights match absolute waste of time. Playing with some players that have been told they are out of the Euro squad. What’s the point in that? Surely the pre tournament games should be the team you believe is your preferred starters. If they get injured, unlucky, we change where needed. What is the point of friendlies? Give a guy a run out in an England shirt? We’ve watched them all season and are fully aware of what they can do. How does a friendly against Austria change anything? If, say Lingard had a worldly, scored 4 and we had no injuries, will that change the squad that has already been finalised.

Denmark played second half of extra time with 10 men. Brentford's Mattius Jensen taken off with what is feared as a broken foot allegedly due to a stamp by Walker I've been watching England since the Mexico World Cup 1970 and hardly missed a match or tournament since. In the last 12 months football has left me cold and woke Southgate and his virtue signallers haven't done anything to improve that situation. I watched a bit of the Scotland match and a bit of last night but that's it. England potentially winning a major tournament for the first time in my living memory should be a cause for celebration but I'm not fussed either way which is disappointing.

Banks, Cohen, Wilson, Styles, Charlton, Moore, Ball , Hunt , Hurst, Peters , Charlton You'd be useful in a pub quiz Although still in short trousers, I recall this well - absolute nightmare (especially the 3rd goal that I can still picture ): In the quarter-final they lost to West Germany 3–2, after having been in the lead 2–0 with twenty minutes remaining. At 2–1 Ramsey had substituted Bobby Charlton and Martin Peters, supposedly to rest them for the semi-final, in what was considered a tactical blunder. The blame for the defeat was partly placed on Ramsey's cautious tactics and substitutions in searing Mexican heat and partly on the stand-in goalkeeper, Chelsea's Peter Bonetti. At 2–0 up Bonetti, who was playing because regular keeper Gordon Banks had been taken ill, had let a seemingly innocuous shot by Franz Beckenbauer slip under his body and was then caught out of position by a looping header by Uwe Seeler. Gerd Müller scored a third in the 108th minute to knock England out. Ramsey blamed Bonetti and his mistakes, but his own tactics were not beyond reproach.

Your recollection was from 1970 World Cup, the team I quoted was 1966. As it happens the score was predicted by a computer for 1970 that we would lose 3 2 after being 2 0 up. Another anecdote at the time was that an English chap going through German customs was confronted by a German Official with " I see we have beaten you at your National Sport" to which he is said the have replied " that's ok we have beaten you at yours TWICE.

Well we certainly have improved since my last post. It could go either way - I hope cheating doesn’t prosper from the Italian’s. Or Sterling for that matter. He’s a strange one Sterling, we can’t deny he’s scored the goals that have made the difference but most times he just runs down blind alleys with no idea of what he’s going to do - then keeps giving away possession. Yet all the pundits keep saying he was outstanding.
Let’s hope we finally get to see England win a major tournament - none of us will be around in another 55 years.

Don't recall 66 but doubt that the 70 team was that different. Must have been some computer to factor in Shilton getting a bad whelk for breakfast and Ramsey forgetting that he needs to win the match before getting a semi-final place.

The 1966 world cup was the first time action replays were used on TV,I remember my late father calling out they've scored again, only to find out it was an action replay. In 1970 I was in Cambridge for the weekend and was late returning to London due to the game. I briefly started smoking again and had 6 cans of McEwans on the train to Liverpool Street
