Well known Ice Hockey player of 1950's Played for Nottingham Panthers and at one time had the best goal scoring record in the world although British Ice Hockey was at a lot lower level than Canada ADa for instance. As I say a household name during the boom time of Ice Hockey after the war.

Strikes me something like someone up north thinking that some rugby league player is a household name. You could put the 10 most famous current RL players in front of me and I'd just moan about the idiots in front blocking my route. Then I wake up in the first aid room

Our teams played and often beat Canadian and North American teams coming back from world championships. Recall Wembley beating USA 9-0 . Also beat Belleville McFarlands representing Canada and drew with Whitby Dunlops again representing Canada.

I remember when speedway was prominently reported in MSM with large articles, rather the scraping in occasionally in the other sport section if nothing significant has happened of more importance in those powerhouse sports of netball, bowls or archery.

I also had never heard of him.
During a holiday in Santorini we were waiting for a table for lunch. The waitress asked if we minded sharing a table for four with the couple in front of us. No problem and we had a good laugh over dinner with the couple. At no time did I know that the guy was Anders Lee, who was captain of the New York Islanders hockey team. He’s played for The USA in three World Cups. As usual with Americans they thought Speedway was cars and had never heard of an American rider who was 4 times World Champion.

Not surprised nobody had heard of him, but in immediate post war era ice hockey was very popular in London there was Wembley, Harringay ,Earls Court and Streatham. So popular in fact that at one time Wembley and Harringay were able to field two teams each Wembley Lions and Wembley Monarchs , Harringay Racers and Harringay Greyhounds.
At primary school we were very keen to get hold of All Sports chewing gum which contained picture cards of Sportsmen . Quite a few Ice Hockey players but can only recall Chick Zamick and Lefty Wilmott. At one time at Wembley you could not pay at the door as all tickets had been sold in advance. My late father had a very sought after permanent reservation.

I think of Wembley, White City (from my work in New Road I used to watch Richard Greer going off to White City in his Merc with bike rack and bike on the back (No vans with "International Speedway Rider" on the side like second many NL riders would have these days!)), Hackney & Wimbledon off the top of my head. 3 lost and the other no longer has the facility to accommodate speedway. It's not really surprising that we are now a real minority sport ignored by the MSM.
