A previous post on this subject I deleted due to Zilch interest . There were a lot of thing I had intended telling on the subject and on the area. Knott End on Sea for instance was often mentioned on Coronation Street as a not to be sought after holiday destination.
However for those interested in Fishing I recall what was called locally " Pegging for Plaice " at Knott End
Knott End is on the Estuary of the River Wyre and similar to Southend the tide went out miles. Pegging for Plaice involved making a square out of bits of wood , tying fishing line round it and then placing fish hooks by more line round it. You then dug up lobworms from the sand baited the hook and walked out as far as you could at low tide. After the next high tide you followed the tide going out until you found the site where your lines were. Initially disappointing but then you found that many Plaice had taken the bait and buried themselves in the sand.

My last time fishing for plaice was in a small boat ooff wells next the sea, again with sand eels, we didn’t catch many plaice but caught a lot of dabs.

Given that you could book a very small room for the board's end of season party, and having a vague idea of what floats people's boat, I'm not sure that's a goer. Interesting bit of trivia all the same. Can't picture the square bit. Sounds a bit laborious for the prize.

As I have said Knott End lies on the Estuary of River Wyre directly opposite Fleetwood ( birthplace of Fisherman's Friend Throat lozenges)access was via a ferry from Fleetwood or a torturous trip by road from Blackpool.
My first visit was Christmas circa 1963/4 , got there by the latter route from Blackpool Station. On Boxing day I saw that Blackpool were at home to Chelsea and I persuaded my girlfriend at the time that we should go. Think we went by bus. Surprised to see that Boxing Day was a normal day in that area and all the shops were open.
At the ground we were approached by a man who had two spare season tickets available for the game and offered them to us. I believe Chelsea won 5 0 with Frank Blunstone scoring a hat Trick.
More to come if anybody interested. Also Dick tell you more re pegging for plaice when next we meet, often wondered if this would be a goer at Hunstanton. Initial set up a bit dear but could be used over and over again.

Rodders, I am totally lost on this subject. So you can’t blame a lack of interest. Riggers puts a good spin on most threads and it’s much appreciated. I like going fishing on local lakes and rivers but not familiar with your sea fishing examples. That doesn’t mean we don’t like to read your experiences.

Pegging for Plaice is not fishing as we know it , rather following out the tide setting your lines securely with stakes in the sea bed , waiting for tide to come in then following it out again to see what you have caught. The person who showed me what to do actually did this to supplement his income.

My second visit to Knott End was the summer of the next year. This time we went by coach to Blackpool, cant remember the coach company but recall it was a double decker bus and service called " Gay Hostess" , what we would have made of that expression these days? What it meant was they had an airline type stewardess serving tea and sandwiches and also there was a toilet. Not sure now how we got from Blackpool to Knott End but have a feeling it was by bus.
Went most days on the ferry to Fleetwood and I recall there were street stalls where you could send Kippers home by post. More to follow!!!.

All sounds great Rodders but it is a specialised subject. Can’t imagine there are too many posters with the knowledge to respond. Doesn’t mean it’s not an interesting read.

As I said before the quickest way to civilisation from Knott End was by ferry to Fleetwood you could then get a tram along the coast to Blackpool ans Lytham. At that time new bungalows were being sold at Knott End for £750 where normal sort of property where I lived cost £4/5000 .
