REDCAR'S HAINES WOE

British Under-21 champion Joe Haines signed a deal with Premier League club Redcar just a day before suffering a serious crash at Australian track Gillman last Saturday.

The 19-year-old sustained a broken collarbone, two broken ribs and a punctured lung after tumbling in the Jack Young Cup meeting.

Haines is not believed to have suffered any back injuries and is recovering quicker than expected, according to his Polish club Grudziadz’s official website.

But Bears promoter Brian Havelock is frustrated to see their injury-ravaged 2010 continue during British racing’s winter recess.

He told gazettelive.co.uk: “Yet again our injury jinx has struck. I just can’t believe it.

“I signed Joe on loan from Wolves for the season because he’s British Under-21 champion and comes in on a 6.37 average - I believe he’s got another point in his locker to add to that. By all accounts, it was a nasty crash and we wish him well for a quick recovery.”

HAINES DISCHARGED

British Under-21 champion Joe Haines is out of hospital in Australia, but looks set to miss the start of the Premier League season.

The Redcar man crashed in the Jack Young Cup meeting at Gillman on December 11, breaking his collarbone and his shoulder in six places. He also sustained seven broken ribs, seven cracked vertebrae and a punctured lung, which forced doctors to put him into an induced coma.

Haines is currently recovering at his base Down Under, but is unlikely to take his place in the Redcar team when their season starts in March.

So Bears promoter Brian Havelock is set to sign a replacement, although he does not rule out drafting in Haines later in the campaign.

He told gazettelive.co.uk: “It’s great news that Joe is out of hospital, but I don’t think there’s any chance of him being race-fit for the start of the new season.

“I’ve spoken to Gary (Havelock) and Jitendra Duffill (team manager) and they agree that the start of the season would be too soon. So I’ll be looking at bringing somebody else in on around seven points.

“If it doesn’t work out, I could have the opportunity to bring Joe in instead once he’s fit.”
