Just having a clearout and found that I'd saved all of the Speedway Stars from that memorable 1995 season of one big league. In the preview copy (of March 18 I think that it was), that year's SGP was down for Arena Essex with Terry Russell spouting off about having plans in place (y'know, the sort of plans and drawings that you see in the ET that never come to fruition) for thousands of additional seats at Purfleet. Don't know how quickly that went pear shaped but by July the SS was filled with the progression of work at the London Stadium, Hackney that staged that year's SGP on Sept 30. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1995_Speedway_Grand_Prix_of_Great_Britain

Surely everyone must have known it could never happen in that stadium, on that awful track. Not to mention the dreadful traffic jams trying to get there or back. Sadly the London Stadium was a disaster, after a lot of hard work and misjudged expectation it rapidly died on its aris. Mostly only remembered for that Boyce punch.

Yes Arena Essex was planning to hold a GP but it got shelved because it lacked the facilities needed for staging a GP. Whoever thought AE was fit for a speedway GP in the first place must have wanted their head examined.

Sad that any track has gone , but Arena Essex ( Lakeside was an awful track, an awful stadium and a nightmare journey I didn't think that it was too bad overall. The main problem was that it was so advantageous to the home side for the vast majority of the time which made most visits unpleasant viewing. If you were a Panthers fan and didn't listen to the evidence or learn after your first trip then you really needed a to have a word with yourself or Panthers Lukas Dryml (seem to recall that he rode there and did ok when he left us)
