Anybody know what happened to him or where he is now? I don't know the story of his demise but always leaves a bad taste in my mouth, on the face of it he was betrayed by what should have been his friends. The truth of course may be entirely different
Doesn't ring any bells with me at all. Sounds a bit more memorable and personal to your good self. A google search brought up some info:
speedwayplus/CarlOakesLike this bit, especially as going to 7 teams in 2023 is seen an an improvement
What does the future hold for speedway? - I have to say that a 9 team Elite league is not working.
Maybe the GP riders should ride purely GPs and open meetings and let Sky pay them the appropriate fees. Leave the Elite league to the dedicated riders and have minimum of 12 teams. Whilst Sky Sports has given a wider view of the sport I am not sure it has all been for the good of the sport in general. Just a shame most of the GB clubs don't own the stadiums they use as then we could have one regular race night. However I still prefer the old system of meetings every night of the week. Promoters need to have a serious rethink or GB speedway will be going backwards.
Dream Team : Carl Oakes - speedwayplus/carl_oakes 3/7/2004
Ivan Mauger - Simply magic. So very professional. Speedways king of all time.
Peter Collins - If only he could have let the clutch out quicker he would have been a multi world champion. Great crowd pleaser.
Ray Morton - Okay, maybe not a superstar but enjoyed his speedway and was always up for a laugh. Great character.
Ryan Sullivan - Top class rider who deserves a little more luck.
Hans Nielsen - Like Mauger, dedicated and focused. Professional and likeable.
John Cook - Showman supreme, top quality rider who enjoyed his speedway.
Craig Hodgson - Had the potential but lacked the final punch to become a top class rider. Great character even if his temper was a little hot at times.
Team ManagerJames Easter - Hated by many, appreciated by few. But he was dedicated and loved the sport.
