How are Peterborough’s new arrivals looked after?Serco say asylum seekers can come and go as they wish from hotels, used until they can be moved into housing in the community.
The Home Office says asylum seekers in hotels get full board accommodation with three meals a day served plus other essentials, including cash payments.
Those in full-board accommodation receive £8.24 a week for essential living items. Those in self-catered accommodation get £40.85 a week for essential needs.source www.peterboroughtoday.co.uk/news/people/date-to-be-set-for-court-action-to-stop-peterboroughs-great-northern-hotel-being-used-as-refuge-for-asylum-seekers-3919713If you choose to add to the thread then careful with any language. You can question policies & processes safely in generic terms but otherwise it can get messy.

Opinion: Even for a kind City like ours – enough is enough (peterboroughtoday/news/politics/opinion-even-for-a-kind-city-like-ours-enough-is-enough 18/11/22)
Peterborough is a caring and welcoming City. We already support more asylum seekers than any other City or Town in the East of England, writes Peterborough MP Paul Bristow.
Despite this, two hotels have been stood up to accommodate single men, who have crossed the Channel in small boats.
Even for a kind City like ours – enough is enough.
The Great Northern Hotel is a flagship City Centre venue. It is the wrong hotel, in the wrong location, at the wrong time.
It’s not right for the young men who have been moved in, not right for our City Centre, not right for the taxpayer, and not right for pre-existing refugees in our City being helped by already stretched resources.
Local charity, the Peterborough Asylum and Refugee Community Association (PARCA), do a fantastic job but it is wrong to ask them to do even more.
SERCO have been contracted by the Home Office to accommodate and support asylum seekers. Each of these individuals – and our pre-existing asylum seeker community – all need induction plans. I have written to SERCO to see what support they plan to give to our City Council, PARCA and public services.
The men themselves are at risk of criminal exploitation. There are healthcare considerations. The City Centre location is problematic.
SERCO cannot simply transport the individuals to hotels and then drive away.
The Great Northern is 170 years old. It stands next to one of the busiest stations on the East Coast Mainline. It is also within the area earmarked for the Station Quarter Levelling Up Bid. This could mean new station facilities, retail and commercial opportunities.
Effectively turning this hotel into a hostel is not a good move for an area which should be the driving force for Peterborough’s economy.
I have raised this issue in Parliament, directly with Ministers, and in recent media appearances. I will do everything I can to ensure this is not a long-term situation.
Predictably, Labour, Lib Dems and Greens have already pointed the finger at me talking racism, divisive rhetoric and hatred. This is immature and shows that they would prefer to play politics than support the City Council, the Police, health service professionals, and all those who have expressed concern. Bizarrely, they also support calls to keep news about hotel location secret. So much for transparency, accountability and the free press.
I am the Chair of the APPG on British Muslims, on the Hazara Community, and work with scores of community organisations representing our diverse City. I am a true product of Peterborough. To make this about race, or me, completely misses the point.
Something very different is happening. This is not about families or individuals fleeing persuasion. In the main, this is about criminal gangs and people smuggling. This is widely reported and accepted.
Sadly for Peterborough, for our support services, and for genuine asylum seekers – this situation has hit our City. I will continue to raise this matter at every opportunity. I hope we can come together as one City to make our case. Peterborough already plays its part. We need to make sure this message is heard loud and clear.

Darren Grimes@darrengrimes_Nov 16This Tory MP has clearly had enough, recognising that his constituents don’t want these illegal migrants in his patch, I’m afraid to say this government don’t look remotely bothered.

So what is the answer? Swift & Clarke opened the door. We are now full but what do you do for these desperadoes? It’s an absolute out of control mess.

In national terms, IMO, the government could sort this without too much trouble if they had the will. Because they will not deal with it though (for whatever reason) it filters down to be a problem locally because it would seem that councils etc just have to put up with what's imposed on them? With seemingly no planning and no thought of whether the local infrastructure or facilities can cope. Not forgetting that it would appear that most of these people are invisible both now and in terms of their history? Not forgetting that once they are here and get settled, I believe that they can bring in 6 family members. The way things are going, there will not be enough tax payers left to fund anything in the UK.

As I understand, but maybe wrong (I doubt it), Swift was the first to introduce families to the Gladstone / Cromwell areas of Peterborough, breed like Rabbits and as you say free to bring numerous family members. Clarke then enticed to encourage other European’s to Peterborough. We all know why, Kerching! They knew exactly what they were doing. This changed Peterborough to what it is today. A F’ing London Suburb. At 19 I bought my first house, Burmer Rd, off Lincoln Rd. So many great Crown to Town weekend fun times. Now, I wouldn’t dare walk 100 yards on Lincoln Rd.

I understand that Cromwell Road was a nice reasonably high class area many many years ago: before my time that is. My older family (no longer with us) lived in Millfield. Firstly in Alma Road when it was nice with Baker Perkins sports club & Northants cricket on their playing fields which could be watched from the back garden. They then they moved to Gladstone street just as it was on the turn to the dump it is today. I spent a lot of my early years in the area when it was a nice area you'd expect to see in an historic city such as ours? As you say, what has it been allowed to turn in to Burma Road ay? My dad used to do a Vernons Pools collection round when I was young, probably a little while before you were there? I recall one house which was about 3/4 of the way down on the right as you travel from Lincoln Road. It sticks in the memory because Barry (can't remember a second name) who used to live their was very into motorbikes and the kitchen often resembled a workshop. Does that ring any bells? The one good thing about walking 100 yards in Lincoln Road/Millfield these days is that you can always get a haircut/shave if you need one. Turn around and walk 10 paces and you're bound to be able to see a barbers shop!

Almost opposite a mattress shop, which I recall changed a few times. Don’t remember a Motorbike enthusiast. I do though remember Vernon pools used to have a weekly round. Weren’t they a lesser version of the main Football pools? As I worked at Perkins Engines there was always pools and spot the ball runners, later replaced by Lottery syndicates. Gladstone street was pretty much a no go zone and Cromwell Rd was on the turn. I then moved to Werrington and have moved further out of Peterborough with every move. Next was Glinton, now been in Langtoft for 16 years. I’ve driven down Lincoln Rd, it’s totally unrecognisable to what it was, very cosmopolitan and scary. I risked my life a few years ago to get a Subway. Couldn’t believe they only do Turkey bacon, which says a lot - thought I was back in Dubai, but not for the scenery. Not been to Queensgate for about 4 years. The last time I went they were spending millions on a John Lewis refurb, then closed it just after it was complete

Funnily enough my dad also worked at Perkins & was in a pools syndicate. I seem to recall that he still payed in after retiring and on checking the numbers one Saturday they got 7 draws. Not a jackpot but potentially a nice return. He contacted the bloke who ran the syndicate but, if my memory serves me right, they'd changed the numbers

Just couldn’t remember the name but I could Vernons and Zetters. The couple that won the jackpot £150,000 (£3.5M in today’s money) early sixties. Was before my time but the story has lived on as they blew it all and ended up skint. That must have really hurt your dad hard. They changed the numbers but didn’t tell him. Can imagine 7 draws would have been a decent payout.

I just had to suffer Facebook to ask a question on a dog group that I'm a member of. When logged in I'd got a friend request from someone called Barry Steels (pretty sure that's the second name that I couldn't remember and my Burma Road contact). No personal detail on his pages apart from a mobile number & DoB 2 years older than me. Lots speedway riders as friends though and clearly a motorbike orientated individual so it all adds up?
