One of my first memories when I began work was a chap whose name I subsequently learnt was Ron Sloane changing into a suit from a pair of jeans on arrival at work. In my naivety at the time I thought he had arrived from a night on the tiles. Subsequently it transpired that he cycled from his home in Essex to the City as he could not afford the train fare. Fast forward some years to something that has stuck with me all my life, he bought his son for Christmas a Woolworths version of Scalextrix did not know batteries or a transformer needed so on Christmas Day whole thing was useless. Often think of the disappointment felt by him and his son on the day. More tales to tell re Ron should there be any interest.

It was also the time when people accepted that if they didn't have the money then they didn't moan about being hard done by, they just lived within their means.

I think I may have said before that I was a brother and father figure to my late brother I bought him his first and only Scalextrix , turned out it was out of date version so brought it back to shop and got the up to date one after Christmas

If you didn’t snail round the bend you always flew off the track. It was more enjoyable setting it up than playing it Regarding batteries, I too have a tub in the man drawer will loads of batteries. All these Christmas gimmicks and lights are nearly all battery powered. Which often cost more than the products

Regarding the aforementioned Ron Sloan in the early days of working with him we used on an ad hoc basis have a meeting with a representative from Head Office on one such occasion Ron mentioned to the chap that he was so hard up on the wages paid that he had to have part time job working on the Tote at Hendon Dog track. Far from taking on Rons financial situation the chap was more interested in how the Tote worked. Think he also got told off as special permission was needed to take on other jobs.
