Recently watched a programme about this and the many deaths and illnesses caused by it. Whilst living in London at the time lived in the suburbs and possibly not effected as much as those based more centrally. One thing does stick in my mind however of that time. We lived in a place Queensbury the only claim to fame it had was that it was third stop from the end of Bakerloo Underground line ( now jubilee line). My father was in the habit of going every Saturday to shop's at a place called Burnt Oak which straddled The Edgware Road and Watling Avenue . Think there was a fruit and veg market there and a shop which was known at the time as being " a mock auction" anyone remember what they were?
Any way on the way home the smog did come down and the bus conductor ( remember them) took it upon himself to sit on the front mudguard of the bus to guide the driver.
Recall many more Fogs and Smogs since then, everyone continued to get to work or school it did not cross anyones mind not to.

Fog is a weather condition, Smog, as I understand is an industrial problem. To which, Europe have made efforts to reduce. Although they have got it wrong many times regarding Carbon Monoxide v PM and Nox. Petroleum v Diesel. Forget Electric vehicles, that’s a complete anomaly (boloxio is my translation when you consider what it takes to provide it). The pollutants that come out of vehicles on and off-highway are cleaner than what goes in. The in thing now is wood burners for air pollution. Isn’t this the same as the older coal fires?

I recall that when my late brothers problems first manifested themselves and he ran away from home we were in the middle of a smog. My mother and I walked through it some 2/3 miles to report him missing at Edgeware Police Station. But I digress

So nobody recalls mock auctions or Bus conductors ? Thought Dick may recall Burnt Oak . Recall at Burnt Oak opposite the Co op department store and outside a pub I think was "The Bald Faced Stag" you could get a Trolley bus all the way to Marble Arch. Suppose nobody knows what a Trolley Bus was.

Suppose nobody knows what a Trolley Bus was. 1976 I went to London to work, the day after the first Notting Hill Carnival spilled out into Robberies and Riots. Not a good start. I don’t know Burnt Oak that well as I never actually worked the area only in passing, I worked in Marylebone until 1980, Marble Arch, Oxford Street and co, then had a brief spell in Bow before moving to Finchley, our local MP who I met a couple of times was one Margaret Thatcher. Trolley Buses were before my time Rodders

In fact a relation of mine was one in Peterborough in the 50s: - click to enlarge. And who could forget

Yes, I remember trolley buses, in Ipswich and Derby and other places I'm sure. Looked like normal buses but ran by electricity from overhead cables which straddled the buildings along the route. I suspect they only operated in town centres, as I don't recall the cables outside built up areas. I certainly remember bus conductors too. I guess labour costs caused their demise, but they definitely speeded up the service.

Smog may be the reason why we are being kept in the dark regarding team next term. Some as has happened in the past will give up and not come again.

Nearest I recall to a mock auction was a guy on Yarmouth Market who sold crockery. He attracted a crowd by literally throwing plates in the air, catching them with a clatter on other plates, indicating how tough they were. Once the crowd had formed he would continue his routine while shouting the reducing price from a ridiculously high starting point. Worth a watch, even if you didn't buy anything!

About the same thing but carried out within or outside shop premises and with a lot wider range of goods

Smog may be the reason why we are being kept in the dark regarding team next term. Some as has happened in the past will give up and not come again. I got an e-mail from someone yesterday who's not ITK but can communicate, unlike the club at the moment. Basically you have messages on here, or there are posts on the BSF, that cover (if not acceptably explain the lack of news) all issues. The team is out there, or the names are, it's just the permutation that we need. I'm sure that it will all be communicated at some point, hopefully with an apology (just "we're sorry that" is all that's needed) along with some explanation of the reason for the delay?

Just like to say, Rodders that I like your occasional dips into things past. It's good to look back from time to time, especially when looking forward can be so depressing!

Agreed, and smog is much more preferable to all of the current guff being thrown at us. As for the future, God help the next UK generation.

THE Iron Duke said something similar to the effect he was glad to be at the end of his life as he feared for the next generation I know Twitter isn't life, but some of the stats quoted, often from seemingly checkable sources, about how the UK has changed & continues to change (without the indigenous population ever being directly consulted) could easily lead one to come to such a sad conclusion!
