These sort of headlines from The BBC (and others) really piss me off. Not nice for the poor boy but why the need to highlight he is black? If the boy was white would it state a ‘White’ 13-year-old boy? Very much doubt it.

If the boy was white would it state a ‘White’ 13-year-old boy? Very much doubt it. I suspect that you're not alone. Strange that they make Fiona Bruce apologise but are quite happy to use that example here. As you say, it's not needed and doesn't add anything of worth to the headline, apart from sowing division. If it had been a real gun and someone had been injured I think that we know which word would have been left out.
