HAMPEL: BEST MAN WON in 2010
Polish hotshot Jaroslaw Hampel says missing out on the World Championship to fellow countryman Tomasz Gollob was far from a disappointment for him.
Gollob secured his maiden SGP series crown with victory in the FIM Nice Italian Grand Prix at Terenzano in September. Leszno hero Hampel had been firmly on the Gorzow star’s tail all year, despite finishing 29 points behind the Bydgoszcz-born maestro.
But having won his maiden SGP round in Copenhagen and completed an incredible one-two for Poland, Hampel was more than happy to take second place on the rostrum to Gollob.
He said: “I have to say one thing – Tomasz was absolutely brilliant this year. He was great everywhere, every time. It was very hard to beat him, but I was pretty close with the points every time.
“I deserved to be second. Tomasz was absolutely the best. Second is such a good result and I’m so glad about this.”
Hampel is determined to prove his stunning return to the World Championship after two years on the sidelines was not a flash in the pan.
He added: “I want to improve and show that was not just one good season for me. I want to improve for the next one. I’ll try and do everything a little bit better than this year. I need to take one step more. There are a lot of things to do. We can always be better.
“I will try to attack a little bit more next year and we will see what happens. It’s not easy because all the rest of the guys want to do the same. We’ll see what happens on the track.
"I have a few things I can change. I don’t want to say anything now, but I know what I should do to race a little bit better. I have a plan.”

Polish hotshot Jaroslaw Hampel admits an incredible league season with Leszno and Vetlanda made life in the Grand Prix series far easier.
The Lodz-born racer enjoyed the campaign of his career in 2010, finishing second in the World Championship behind fellow countryman Tomasz Gollob. The pair also joined forces to inspire the Poles to Speedway World Cup glory at Vojens.
But Hampel’s success was not only limited to the SGP series. The Danish Grand Prix winner starred as Leszno lifted the Polish Ekstraliga title and Vetlanda took gold in the Swedish Elitserien.
When riders endure a tough season with their clubs, it can translate to poor performances in the World Championship.
So Hampel was delighted to be part of such powerful teams in his homeland and Sweden.
He said: “It was a fantastic year. It was great to win the titles in Poland and Sweden as well. This helped me a lot because I didn’t have any problems throughout the whole season at any of my clubs.
“It meant I could concentrate a little bit more when I started in a Grand Prix meeting. It’s good to race at such top clubs.”
With two championship winner’s medals in his pocket at the end of last year, it is no surprise that Hampel is staying with both teams for 2011.
“I don’t want to change anything, so I’m staying with Leszno,” he said. “It’s easier when you start at a strong club with good money conditions. There is a nice atmosphere in the team and that’s so important if we want to win.
“I don’t want to change anything there and the same with my Swedish club. It’s one of the best ones in Sweden, just like Leszno is one of the best in Poland.”
