What a shocker It was billed as a cup final and the supporters turned out in force at London Road for the fixture with league leaders Brighton and Hove Albion, but a soft dismissal in the first half ended the hopes of Peterborough United. George Boyd was controversially sent off for a tussle with Ashley Barnes and Brighton took full advantage crusing to a 3-0 victory and if it had not been for goalkeeper Joe Lewis, who saved a penalty amongst other wonderful stops, the score-line would have been far healthier for the Seagulls. Manager Gary Johnson made four changes to the starting line-up for the clash with table toppers Brighton and Hove Albion with Ryan Bennett, James Wesolowski, Nathaniel Mendez-Laing and Charlie Lee restored to the line-up. The movement of Glenn Murray was causing one or two problems and he was denied by goalkeeper Joe Lewis on seven minutes after a glorious through ball from Gary Dicker. Lewis was called upon again moments later to push Bridcott's long-range effort over the crossbar as the Seagulls settled well. The pace of Craig Mackail-Smith caused problems at the other end, finding himself one on one with the last defender, but he was sent wide and his shot was blocked by Adam El-Abd. Brighton were looking composured in possession, playing some nice stuff in midfield with Bulgarian Kishisev dictating things in the centre of the park. They got themselves in front on 16 minutes and it was Ashely BARNES who nodded the visitors in front from an in-swinging free-kick from Dicker. The striker got in front of Joe Lewis to nod the ball into the back of the net. Brighton were knocking the ball about like Real Madrid but as Johnson stressed himself at the Fans Forum on Thursday night, teams at this level can fluctuate between Madrid and a local Sunday league side and Posh need to stay in this game for as long as possible. Posh were given a mountain to climb on 27 minutes as rookie referee Gary Sutton showed George Boyd a straight red card for a tussle with Barnes. Initially Barnes kneed Boyd in the face and the referee, who was not even looking at the incident, gave Boyd his marching orders for retaliation. Brighton were given a spot-kick moments later as Bennett brought down Bennett inside the box and the same Brighton player stepped and saw his penalty kick superbly saved by Lewis. McCann was then booked, his fifth caution of the campaign, for dissent as the frustration grew from the stands. Mclean was withdrawn for Lee Frecklington on the half hour mark to bring an extra man into midfield. From a Bennett corner kick, Brighton doubled their lead, it was a near post set-piece and the ball fell kindly to CALDERON who slotted the ball into the net from six-yards out. On the stroke of half-time, Lewis made a superb double stop to deny Calderon. Half-time: Posh 0-2 Brighton & Hove Albion Four minutes after the break Glenn Murray was carded for a foul on Lee before Chris Whelpdale replaced Lee Frecklington. Calderon was certainly irking the supporters with his 'simulation', rolling around on the floor for several seconds before making a miraclous recovery to the frustration of the home faithful. Lewis was keeping Posh in this game, superbly pushing a fierce Kishishev volley over the crossbar after Murray had been poleaxed by a shot from Painter. Something was then thrown from the away end which the referee brought to the attention of the stewards. Brighton did have the ball in the back of the net on 56 minutes as Bennett found the back of the net, but the offside flag was already raised by the official. Gary Johnson's men were looking okay going forward, Wesolowski and Mendez-Laing both seeing shots go wide of the target. Brighton were awarded a spot-kick on 62 minutes as Lewis upended Bennett in the box with the official handing the shot-stopper a yellow card. This time it was BARNES who took the responsbility and this time was able to convert. Lewis again took centre stage on 67 minutes as he made a brilliant stop to deny Murray and then Barnes smashed the rebound against the top of the crossbar. Substitute Baz fired straight at Lewis when well placed on 72 minutes as the Seagulls continued to dominate. A mistake at the back let in Whelpdale on 83 minutes, but the winger took a touch and then fired high and wide, leading to a large amount of home fans heading for the exits. The lively Elliott Bennett glanced a header wide of the target after a clever cross into the box, but Brighton were fairly content to just keep the ball and play the match out. Barnes struck the bar from the edge of the area and then a Lee clearance could of gone anywhere, but thankfully for him, went wide of the far post as the game entered the final three or four minutes. Final Score: Posh 0-3 Brighton & Hove Albion Posh: Lewis, Little, Langmead, Lee, Wesolowski (sub Nana 66min), Mclean (sub Frecklington 30min (sub Frecklington 51min)), Boyd, McCann, Mackil-Smith, Bennett, Mendez-Laing. Unused subs: Collis, Hibbert, Piergianni, Davies. Brighton: Ankergren, Greer, El-Abd, Bennett, Barnes, Calderon, Murray (sub Baz 71min), Dicker, Painter, Kishishev (sub Battipiedi 78min), Bridcutt. Subs: Brezovan, Elphick, Lua-Lua, Hart, Smith. Attendance: 10,116 (2,519 Brighton fans) poshweb

Posh 1 v Charlton 5 And we thought we had it bad. Swales swap for Johnson anyone? If it's a choice then 1-5 every time for me Funnily enough I only went to one pre-season friendly and that was Posh 1 Leicester 5. The signs were there but I hoped that they really were not that bad and that they'd improve defensively. However, 33 for and 33 against suggests that they are that bad and not improving, certainly not a Swales mission!

the return of Fergie seems to be gathering momentum!!! Wonder how long he'll last this time or which Jackanory D Mac & Bazza sold him Good to see Brentford get done in the 93rd minute, that'll teach them for kicking or tripping anything that moved

It's taken Bob Burrows only 47 mins to mention Ferguson standing on the touchline in his smart suit, how pleased he must be to once again be able to use all of his redundant Ferguson quotes

Fans comment:
"Whelps - D Lewis - B Boyd - C- Little - D Totally agree with the rest. Its so sad to see another report from the "boyd fan club chairman". Whelps has had one decent game all season and he gets a C. Whilst Lewis produces some quality stuff he is not a goalkeeper any of the fans have total faith in if most are honest. Boyd, we all know he can be quality but he's not performed to his standard in any games this season bar a couple. Little, oh please, Large could do a better job. Charlie Lee gets a B for me, just on the few games he's played so far...."

Anyway, back on real sport, c'mon the Posh Given a choice would it be Posh or Panthers? Currently no contest. It would be like todays match, totally one sided. Now if only the EoE could serve up the same level of entertainment!

Speedway has to turn up that level of entertainment so it isn't Peterborough specific imo!

If Lewis thinks he will be attracting offers for his services after that display last night the boys in cloud cuckoo land.
That was the worst display by a keeper I have seen in ages, he pretty much lost us the 2 points on his own.

Now our defence seem fairly settled hes awful. And he cost us a point at MK as well!

That was the worst display by a keeper I have seen in ages, he pretty much lost us the 2 points on his own. Typical punch in no-mans land for the first but the second was awful team play from when McCann lost it, Kennedy never stopped the cross and then the TWO Posh defenders never dealt with it, that's not the fault of Lewis IMO. Having said that, the third was an absolute shocker and just shows what he's always got in him. Heard the commentator say that Lewis was destined for big thing when Posh were 2-0 up. I bet that view had changed at 93 mins

Could have been worse and nicely balanced for Thursday 3 shocking goals conceded; MK red card missed (two-footed tackle on Mendez-Laing) but evened up with one that wasn't for the penalty which also wasn't. Langmead true to form and sells the red card waiting to happen (Charlie Lee) short with a pass with the invariable result! Roll on Thursday!

With the game so finely balanced, there's only one place to be in Peterborough on Thursday night! Up the Posh

I didn't realise that Boris Johnson was a Posh fan? Was sure that I saw him sat with the Posh fans in the away end

Peterborough United can confirm that goalkeeper Joe Lewis will be out of the play-offs after scans revealed that he sustained a fractured kneecap during the first leg at stadium: mk.
Lewis, who completed 45 minutes of football before being replaced by Paul Jones, should be fit for the start of the new campaign.
'It is obiously a big blow to miss the play-offs and my main aim now is to obviously be fit for pre-season, which I believe I will be. I was obviously in a lot of pain after the incident, but I felt I could play on, but it just got worse as the half progressed.
'At half-time, we thought we could get through it, but it just got worse and I knew that I wouldn't be able to dive on it, so I had to come off. I went to see the specialist on Tuesday and he told me that there was a fracture.
'A fracture is actually better than a dislocation in terms of recovery time. It is a blow because I hadn't actually ruled out playing on Thursday today (Tuesday), but obviously I am going to have to watch from the sidelines now.
'I have no doubt that Paul Jones will be able to handle the play-offs, he has actually played more games in the first team than me and he will be fine. I am convinced he has the ability and mental strength to cope with the pressure,' Lewis said.

The football club have sold over 9,500 home tickets for Thursday night's second leg with Milton Keynes Dons at London Road (7.45pm) with only limited availability in the South Stand remaining. The London Road Terrace has now sold out, but there is still some 'goal view restricted' seating available in the Main Stand (due to pillars). Supporters wishing to have their tickets posted must purchase tickets before 2pm on Tuesday, otherwise they will be held for collection from the stadium. Supporters are also advised that the majority of home tickets ordered over the last week were printed over the weekend and dispatched on Monday. You can purchase tickets for Thursday's game online at www.theposhtickets.com, via the 24-hour hotline 0844 847 1934 and at the Ticket Office, which is open from 9am until 5pm from Monday-Wednesday. Reminder: The game on Thursday is ALL TICKET - you must purchase a ticket in advance to attend. Posted on PUFC: Tue 17 May 2011
