Read the story of Sam Waley-Cohen, the amateur jockey, on BBC Sport. The first amateur to win since 1990 and first 7 year old horse to win since 1940. His story is a ready made movie - quite remarkable b0252

I never did these today but did clock them when checking today's meeting A to Z - one makes me think of Ged Rathbone & the other Fast Freddy Lindgren:
1 (5) Rathbone 9/1 6 8 12 - K A Ryan T Eaves
1 (2) Ready Freddie Go 9/1 4 9 11 - Ollie Pears Harry Russell
a nice 99/1 double for the brave!

As said, not a gambling man but Epsom comes on my TV. So decide to pick the Hodgy £1 on Tuesday (the GG). Based on my Moore, other family names. Thank you Tuesday. Happy not another few metres.

Now that I've left the rat race I look every day at the day's horseracing racecards. I don't bet much because I don't like losing money and/or chasing money. I look at RUK & Oddschecker (usually races of 8 or more that allow e/w if that's your bag? (I know that it's not yours) and the Daily Mirror with their single shot (one booked ride for jockey in form) tip, longest traveller info & Pro Bet (who's had a mare this week). Over the last 3 months my Boylesports account says staked approx £125 & returns of approx £150 which suits me fine. In UK classics, my rule is just do O'Brien's (Aidan that is) horses and hope that one of the less fancied wins, although 13/2 was a helluva price for the shortest of his 4. £2 on each would have cost £8 with a return of £15. That’s not a fortune but you’re not losing and all of those little wins add to the credit. I watched a replay on RUK of the race finish and initially thought Tuesday had just fought back to win. They then did a side on nearer the line and I thought bugger, Emily Upjohn has just got there, but in the final stride her head went up as Tuesday's head dipped. Doesn't get much closer than that, a most unusual finish. You could have doubled it up with the 2.25 at Market Rasen: 1st Dellboy Trotter 3/1

It reminded me of those ‘horse merry go round’s’, when one head goes up the other goes done

I remember Bratters saying that he got an invite to Frost's box at Ascot (not sure if it was a Readypower box or his personal box?) Without checking, I think that ran the other day? I'm sure that I saw it tipped.

From one bent sport to another You have to factor that in to your betting equation. Knowledge is good when it comes to such things. I was looking the other day and one quote said something along the lines of, "that with big races & meetings coming up then many of those running might be out for the run (ie not particularly trying)" so one's not filled with confidence as to alleged underhandedness within the sport.

Having been a Tic Tac man and seen the antics that went on at the greyhound racing, I learned you have as much chance backing a winner because of the name. The GG’s are even worse, until it comes to the big race pay day. If money is involved it’s usually bent.

As I've said before, I always look out for my dogs' names (Charlie, George, Harry) and if you know a bit then you can avoid the mug punt element. Winners in the last week (I saw them both but didn't bet. Not because they were a mug punt but because I couldn't be bothered: Tuesday Charlie Arthur 10/3 Wednesday Hotspur Harry 7/2 As for the Frost horse. I see that it ran & won yesterday: 7.16 Doncaster - 1st Tanmawwy 11/8 Fav (Trainer C Hills & Jockey James Doyle) - Owner Mr H Frost. Don't know who H Frost is? Rick was 78 though on April 13

Surely this weekend belongs to Nations Pride Wrong Crown criteria. What an easy win. I avoided my own advice and the O'Brien horses. I did Nahanni (missed start but best Appleby horse) and Westover as e/w bets so made a bit of profit without a winner. It was Hornby's first Derby ride and he got in all sorts of trouble (could have been the horse wandering on the undulations?) but he was swallowing up the ground at the end. Would have been interesting to see him have a clear run. Probably wouldn't have caught the winner but we'll never know.

However, as we know in Speedway, a clear undisturbed run can make a big difference. You win by a mile or trail in last.

I think H Frost is in fact Rick, seem to recall someone doing a search on him when he took over the club.

Tipped up by Nevison tomorrow (sadly RTV tipsters have trouble picking their nose this year so not a particular positive): Royal Hunt Cup (Heritage Handicap) (Class 2) (Turf) 15 Jun 2022 5pm 7 places on PP (8 on Skybet) so may have an e/w dabble at 10/1 or higher.

It comes to all of us unfortunately although not many of us will be 78 in the winners enclosure at Royal Ascot I've recorded it so will check it out later. I guess that he was in the paddock when his winner returned.

He promises to do better still and can put up a bold bid. Victoria Cup scorer Vafortino and low-mileage Tanmawwy are others to consider, as are Silent Film and George Boughey's Inver Park.
