7 May 1983 Spandau Ballet were at No.1 on the UK singles chart with ' True', the group's only No.1. The song spent four weeks at the top of the UK chart and was a hit in 20 other countries. Parts of the original version have been sampled and used in a number of songs. Talking about time flying. It doesn’t seem that long ago when I went to watch Spandau Ballet live at The NEC in the 80’s. It was being filmed live by the C4 programme ‘The Tube’. I had a dreadful cold and my eyes would not stop watering. I was terrified I would be picked up on TV and people thinking I was one of those crazy crying fans Surprised they only had one No.1 with ‘True’. ‘Through the Barricades’ always my favourite. It’s a shame how they ended. Tony Hadley and The Kemp brothers fighting rights in court. They had a brief reunion recently but Hadley walked away again. He’s got a new solo album out and is currently touring.

Whether it was true or not I don't know but I seem to remember Hadley wanting a share of the royalties because he felt that his performance was a significant factor to the Spandau Ballet's songs successes. The judge said something along the lines of that argument being the same as wanting credit for a book because of the way you read it I tend to agree with the judge because the easiest way to get a hit is just do a cover of a big hit. As long as it's someone reasonably well known and competent then the song will be a success.

It appears one of those sad situations that could have been handled much easier than fuelling greedy lawyers. Gary Kemp wrote the big sellers but Tony Hadley and Saxophonist, Steve Norman brought them to life. They all had a part to play but money, greed and fame often leads to these sad conflicts.

The first single I ever bought as a youngster for the first record player birthday present. It wasn’t grand but it was a life changer. I could play vinyl records. Still an absolute classic tune.

27 May 1977 The Sex Pistols single 'God Save The Queen' was released in the UK. Banned by TV and radio, high street shops and pressing plant workers refused to handle the record. It sold 200,000 copies in one week and peaked at No.2 on the UK charts behind Rod Stewart's 'I Don't Want to Talk About It'. There have been persistent rumours, (never confirmed or denied), that it was actually the biggest-selling single in the UK at the time, and the British Phonographic Industry conspired to keep it off the No.1 slot.
The Sex Pistols were an English punk rock band that formed in London in 1975. Although their initial career lasted just two and a half years, they are one of the most groundbreaking acts in the history of popular music. They were responsible for initiating the punk movement in the United Kingdom and inspiring many later punk and alternative rock musicians. Their fashion and hairstyles were a significant influence on punk image, and they are often associated with anarchism within music.
- The Sex Pistols originally comprised vocalist John Lydon (known at the time by his stage name "Johnny Rotten"), guitarist Steve Jones, drummer Paul Cook and bassist Glen Matlock. Matlock was replaced by Sid Vicious in early 1977.

The single reached No. 7 on the UK Singles Chart.
