Think there must at least be some doubt that Season 2021 will happen. Assuming it does I have serious concerns whether Iversen and Harris will be able to produce the sort of form we had been expecting from them in 2020 One simple question: do you think that things will be any better in March after a potentially grim dark and cold winter than they are now after mild and bright summer? Things just seem to be getting worse when you'd hope that we'd be over the worst. I'm not sure whether promotions and riders can plan and spend under such circumstances. Unless the UK Gov decides that we'll have to live with it and accept that people are going to catch it but life goes on then it could be stop start for years.

Danish bosses have confirmed the Metal Speedway League will return in 2021.
Despite efforts to stage a limited programme at the end of the season, coronavirus restrictions forced the cancellation of the league this year.
But following a meeting of eight competing clubs at Danish SGP venue Vojens last Saturday, Grindsted, Fjelsted, Esbjerg, Region Varde, Slangerup, Holsted, Vojens (SES - Sønderjylland Elite Speedway) and Brovst (Nordjysk Elite Speedway) all confirmed they are ready to stage action again.
League chairman Annette Vesterskov said: “We want to send a clear message to the Danish speedway fans, sponsors and clubs, as well as to all the riders who have a contract in the Metal Speedway League, that you will not experience another year on the sidelines.”
It’s unclear how severe crowd restrictions and social distancing measures will be for the 2021 season, which usually gets underway in Denmark in late April or early May.
But Vesterskov insists teams are working on a range of plans that would allow them to cope with whatever challenges they face.
She added: “Without being able to go into details, we are working with more models in relation to any restrictions in the coming year, but most importantly all clubs agree to ensure speedway at the highest level in 2021.”

Think there must at least be some doubt that Season 2021 will happen. Well here we are with just over 3 months to a season with things little improved. The summer months and more fresh air and daylight should bring some rest-bite but I wouldn't put money on a league season taking place despite the will of everyone to make it happen. Dec 17 ET:"As per the latest Government announcement on Thursday morning, Peterborough has moved into Tier 3 so our Sky Bet League One fixture with Ipswich Town at the Weston Homes Stadium on Saturday will revert back to being 'behind closed doors'," read the statement on theposh.com "The fixture with Charlton Athletic after Christmas will also be behind closed doors with Government review of tiers taking place after every two weeks." The news was met with anger by Posh chairman Darragh MacAnthony, who wrote on Twitter: "Good old Government Overreach at its finest again. "Another nail in coffin for our industry. You can have fans back... for a game... then pull the plug again.
"More money down drain to prep for it all. Our business doesn't matter to those in charge."

Peterborough Panthers owner Keith Chapman says his December visit to the track was a real boost:
Chapman was at the EoES for a meeting but took the opportunity to check up on the Showground track. He said that it wouldn’t take long to have it prepared for a meeting – even with current weather conditions. “It’s looking really good, it’s so smooth and it would only take a couple of hours to get it in mint condition for racing. It should mean there won’t be a lot of work ahead of next season to get the place ready. I’m confident we’ll see more fast racing on a great surface which the riders enjoy being on.” Chapman said:
Chapman is remaining tight-lipped at this stage regarding team structures at Premiership level with some riders ruled out because of rules in Poland preventing them from riding in more than two other leagues. “I don’t like it but we have to work with the tools we have,” he added. “It’s well known a lot of discussions have taken place between the clubs and I’m sure a solution will be found very soon. “Whatever the outcome we will ensure Peterborough will be competitive and we’ll have a team full of riders who are desperate to succeed.”

Tier 4 Covid restrictions which came into force in Peterborough today (December 20) may have to remain in force for two months according to Health Secretary Matt Hancock. That could take us to the end of Feb, but who knows with this government and its handling of the pandemic? The double whammy of course is that the EoES just sits inside Tier 4 although it looks like Alwalton doesn't

Think there must at least be some doubt that Season 2021 will happen. Well listening to the news today you'd be well within your rights to question that. I'm sure that things will improve in spring when the clocks go forward on 28 March at 1am, but to what extent I don't know. What I do know is that if promoters are planning now for the season then they haven't got much positive to work with. Also, can riders spend money on equipment etc not knowing when or if it is going to be used? How many riders have now found other work and can't risk giving up regular income for anything like the on, off, on, off, off 2020 season? Swindon may have the best idea (although I'll believe their return to the track when I see it) by sitting it out until 2022, but if they do return then you have to wonder what will be left of the sport by then?

British Speedway Promoters Ltd bosses are now expecting the 2021 UK season to start in May after delaying their annual meeting for a week to January 14.
Following the UK Government’s decision to impose a national lockdown until at least the middle of February due to the escalation in Covid-19 cases, promoters have postponed their AGM. BSPL directors hope the extra week will give them a clearer idea of the options available as they plan for this season.
It has been widely rumoured that clubs have been hotly debating possible changes to this year’s team-building rules after initially suggesting the sides named for 2020 should be retained for 2021.
Some riders are unable to return to Britain due to restrictions on how many leagues those who compete in Poland can enter. As a result, cuts to the point limit and even a switch to six-man teams have been mooted.
It is hoped the extra seven days will allow promoters time to mull over their options for the new season, it was felt prudent to take a little more time to consider the recent developments and be as clear as possible on our options. It was proposed that the season would begin at Easter, but in all probability it looks more like a May start to the British Speedway season now.
British Speedway bosses are also keen to take steps to ensure their sides remain as strong as possible into the future in light of Polish rule changes, limiting PGE Ekstraliga riders to compete in just one other league, while First and Second Division stars can enter up to two.
Following a year without speedway and the decision by Poland to restrict rider availability, bosses also thought that it is absolutely vital that their planning not only gives the strongest possible teams across both the Premiership and Championship, but also makes provision for sustainability in the future.
The intention is to make decisions that enable the sport to grow and put British Speedway back as a force to be reckoned with in world speedway.

More details regarding the 2021 season will be revealed alongside our broadcast partners Eurosport in the coming days. BSPA Thursday January 14, 2021 It is "too early" to say whether England's Covid restrictions will be able to end in the spring, Prime Minister Boris Johnson has said. Once the four priority groups have been vaccinated, by mid-February, "we'll look then at how we're doing," he said. Nearly two million people in the UK have had their first dose of vaccine in the past week, government figures show. As this is local and shows the problem of event planning in the current climate it's sort of relevant.
The Peterborough Beer Festival - one of the biggest in the country - has been cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic for the second year in a row (ET Friday, 22nd January 2021)
The festival normally takes place on The Embankment in late August, and attracts thousands of people every year.
A spokesman said: “This has not been an easy decision to take, but is without doubt the correct decision AT THIS TIME. Let me just put some perspective on this, maybe a brief explanation.
“It costs CAMRA around £250,000 to build the site and get the infrastructure into place, before we even consider the cost of purchasing beers and other wet sales products, or consider staffing costs or the range of other behind the scenes activities. Many suppliers are national companies with long term commitments and overheads that require a substantial deposit from us in advance of the event taking place. We cannot take this financial risk given the current uncertainty. In addition, PCBF has to have the correct insurance cover in place but with COVID19 conditions needing to be included into insurance policies the costs and risks are beyond our means at this time.
“No one can be sure where we may find ourselves in late August, but one thing for certain is that many uncertainties will still prevail, even in 6 months’ time.
“The percentage of the public with up to date vaccinations, any new variants of the disease, group isolation/lockdowns and the possibility of legislation to close down events with little or no notice are factors that we have no control over.
“PCBF is said to be the Social Event of the Year for many of us and Peterborough CAMRA believe it is a MUST to protect members of the public as well as our 200+ staff from any potential unnecessary exposure to any risk from the virus. With around 27,000 visitors over the five days of the festival and a vaccination efficacy of 93% it could be possible for 200 persons to be infected simply by visiting the festival. We cannot risk the health of any visitors or staff unnecessarily.
“This IS NOT the end of Peterborough Beer Festival, once some semblance of normality returns and we are able to operate the event securely and safely, then we will do so. Please understand the difficulties we all currently find ourselves in. We will still need ALL OF YOUR support to get back on track when we are able.”

Signing coup for Peterborough Panthers as GP star decides to end his career in the cityThat's the headline in today's ET 4th Feb. I'll leave it with you to get excited before you find out that "signing coup" & "GP star" are not always what the definition would indicate. Just in case you don't know: PETERBOROUGH have pulled off the shock signing of former Grand Prix rider Bjarne Pedersen. Dane Pedersen, who was World No.6 in 2005, has three top-flight UK titles under his belt with Poole but hasn’t figured in this country since 2016. He now returns for a farewell campaign at the age of 42 having confirmed he intends to call time on his racing career. Pedersen said: “Everyone knows I’ve had some great times in England, and I want to do really well for Peterborough. “It’s come at the perfect time for me. To be honest, I was thinking perhaps I might get a call later in the year but for me to do this now is perfect. “I know six of the Peterborough team and I’m sure we will get a good team spirit going. I’m really looking forward to it and I hope we can get going in May, things look like they are improving slowly over there. “I also love the Peterborough track, the Showground has always been one of my favourites in the UK.” BSPA

A four-stage plan could see England’s coronavirus restrictions finally lifted by June 21, Boris Johnson has announced (Johnson told MPs that with a mass vaccination programme easing pressure on overstretched hospitals, "the end really is in sight".23/2/21)
In the first phase, all pupils in England’s schools are expected to return to class from March 8 - Socialising in parks and public spaces with one other person will also be permitted from that date.
A further easing of restrictions will take place on March 29 when the school Easter holidays begin – with larger groups of up to six people or two households allowed to gather in parks and gardens.
– From April 12 at the earliest: shops, hairdressers, nail salons, libraries, outdoor attractions and outdoor hospitality venues such as beer gardens will reopen.
– From May 17 at the earliest, two households or groups of up to six people will be allowed to mix indoors and limited crowds will be allowed at sporting events.
– From June 21 at the earliest, all remaining restrictions on social contact could be lifted, larger events can go ahead and nightclubs could finally reopen.
